Pierre Moscovici, the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, spoke about the situation between Greece and the Eurozone in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt. Greece will not remain in the Eurozone at any cost, he said, even though a Greek exit would inflict great damage on the currency union. The European Commissioner noted that the Eurozone needs to respect the fact that Greeks chose a new government, while the Greeks have to respect that their country has made several commitments to its partners. “Things are moving slowly, very slowly,” he added. Furthermore, he added that the “Eurogroup has an overwhelming will to keep Greece in the eurozone. Financial accidents can happen. Our task, however, is not to organize this but to prevent it.” “We won’t keep Greece in the eurozone at any price, but under strict conditions which are acceptable for both sides,” noted Moscovici. Meanwhile, when asked if Europe could withstand the Grexit, the European Commissioner replied: “The eurozone is in a better position than two years ago but a Greek exit from the single currency would still inflict great political damage since everyone would ask, which member state is next.”
