The famous shipwreck that has become a landmark of the popular beach of Navagio on the Greek island of Zakynthos is about to receive a facelift, if the municipal authority’s proposals go through. The island’s mayor, Pavlos Kolokotsas, is considering to implement a conservation program for the eroding vessel as well as fencing it in, to limit the access of beachgoers who are responsible for some of the damage. The municipality is earmarking about 25,000-30,000 euros but also seeking cooperation with people from the private sector who have experience in the field. Kolokotsas said the plan also includes hiring a guard who will supervise the wreck when beachgoers are present, adding a portable chemical toilet and, if possible, hiring a lifeguard.
