Crete: Two Criminal Organizations Dismantled

Greek Police were successful in dismantling two criminal organizations with 96 members active in Crete, in an operation that took place over the weekend. According to Greek authorities, the two separate organizations had the same leader and were constantly taking part in criminal acts such as extortion, robberies, thefts and drug trafficking in the region of Crete. One of the organizations was involved in various cases of robbery and extortion, as well as offenses relating to explosives, aggravated theft and offenses against property rights and physical integrity. The second criminal organization was accused of possession and trafficking of narcotic substances and for the cultivation of cannabis. Twenty one individuals were part of both criminal organizations, including the leader, a 37-year-old local resident. In total, twelve members were arrested, five of which were part of the organizations’ leading core. Several months of specialized, combined police investigation lead to the arrests which were the result of a large-scale police operation. The felony file formed against the actions of the two criminal organizations includes a total of 96 people. As part of the operation, police performed searches in houses, warehouses and vehicles, and seized the amount of 108,745 thousand euros, 600 grams of cannabis and a cannabis plant, a car used for drug trafficking, two guns, 107 cartridges of various types and calibers, a precision scale, various documents of financial transactions, numerous mobile phones and SIM cards. The arrested members will appear before the prosecutor of Rethymno, Crete, while police will continue to investigate the full range of the criminal activities in which they were involved.
