Rise in Car Sales Hints at Economic Recovery

Vehicle sales in Greece continued to rise last month, as new vehicle registrations increased by 33.7 percent compared to October 2013, showing a shy hint of economic recovery, a Kathimerini report says. Following the impressive increase in tourist arrivals, coach sales almost doubled this year as hotels and travel agencies invested in new vehicle purchases. Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data released on Monday show that in October the numbers of new vehicle permits are as follows:  7,439 passenger cars, compared with 5,627 in October 2013, posting a 32.2 percent increase. There were also 60 permits issued for coaches, compared to 31 permits a year earlier. The increase of truck sales is also a hint of an economy on the rise, as 1,659 truck permits were issued in October 2014 compared with 1,192 in the same month in 2013. According to the ELSTAT figures, more vehicles were sold in the first 10 months of 2014 (59,452) than in 2013 (58,659). Sales of new trucks reached 4,102 in the January-October period, exceeding the 3,698 trucks sold throughout 2013. A total of 158 new coaches were sold January through October 2014, compared to 97 in the January-December 2013 period.
