For yet another year the International Short Film Festival of Drama presented some of Greece’s newest and most interesting short films, as well as some significant foreign productions. The support for the festival offered by the residents of Drama has turned it into one of Greece’s most important cultural events. The following films won particular praise from the Greek audience: Prosefhi by Thanasis Neofotistos Neofotistos’s first movie confronts the issue of bullying in Greek schools. The main character, Dimitris, lives in terror while under daily attack from schoolmates. The film’s main themes are adolescence, adulthood, Dimitris’s inner world and his relationship with those around him. Drag Me: An Urban Music Tale by Nikos Kellis This great animation — based on the song “Drag What’s left of my Body through the Mud” of The You and What Army Faction — follows the adventures of a girl in the deadly, dirty and cruel streets of a vast metropolis. The Immortalizer by Marios Piperidis Cyprus, 1878: a desperate father attempts to save his daughter. In the middle of the night, he finds himself looking for the only man who can keep her alive. The film has won accolades for its aesthetics and impressive performances in film festivals in Cyprus and Portugal. The guilable Kiss of Mr. Patokos by Evaggelos Alexandros Apostolakis The film wrestles with the difficult issue of a protagonist’s love for a figure of his imagination. The director uses a moving pencil to capture their introduction and invite us to the emotional world of his characters. Above and Beyond by Anita Chamilou Anita Chamilou’s first film entices the spectator from its earliest seconds. An old man lives alone on the Greek-Albanian border. A radio is his only company. But what happens when his favorite music station closes due to financial difficulties? Walk by Stella Kyriakopoulou Dealing with the issue of the economic crisis, the film traces the story of a poor mother, Marissa, and her daughter. Marissa takes her daughter for their usual walk around the city — but, unbeknownst to her daughter, Marissa is planning to give her up for adoption. Spectrum by Dimitris Gkotsis The film shows the brutal day of five people in the Athens city center. The director creates a violent portrait of every day people who are prepared to forgo their limits and resort to violence on the slightest pretext.
