Salaries of Judges to Pre-Crisis Level
The cuts in the salaries of judges were deemed unconstitutional on the principle of proportionality and the constitutional rule of equality and thus their salaries will return to pre-crisis levels. According to a report by the General Accounting Office of the Greek Finance Ministry, the adjustment of the salaries of the judges as well as the retroactive payment of salaries and pensions will amount to 170 million euros. The Greek government imposed cuts in the salaries of judges on August 1, 2012 as part of the country’s commitments to its foreign lenders. Out of the 170 million euros, about 49.4 millions will be used for the adjustment of judges salaries to the levels before August 2012 while 20.16 million euros will be used for the adjustment of their pensions. People of Greece who are suffering recession, and see their salaries and pensions cuts are afraid that this decision will pave the way for the increase of parliamentary salaries. However the government spokeswoman, Sophia Voultepsi announced that the adjustment of salaries won’t apply to MPs.
