Nightclubs in Mykonos Shut Down Due to Curfew Laws
Several nightclubs and restaurants on the famous Greek island of Mykonos have been shut down due to recently enforced curfew laws. In order to show their support for their fellow businessmen, local nightclub and restaurant owners are going on strike, voluntarily shutting down their own shops. The club owners came to this unanimous decision after their union meeting during which they decided to stand against the implementation of the 4149/2014 law which consists of several regulations regarding the operation of such businesses. The union meeting came to the decision that the nightclubs and restaurants would remain closed for 10 days. Even though local authorities have already started shutting down, businesses all over the island of Mykonos including club owners, have decided to protest the law and demand that certain adjustment are made to it through an inter-ministerial regulation. They also argue that the law is unconstitutional and will have a great economic impact on the island. The law, which was implemented rather abruptly states that such establishments cannot stay open after 3am. Owners however, argue that this will hurt their businesses, as well as the island’s economy, especially now that the tourist season is starting. Meanwhile, the island’s newly elected mayor has expressed his wish to stand by the owners and also mentioned that he intends to send representatives to various ministries in the Greek capital so that they can talk with the people who are involved in the case and try to resolve the problem.
