Oxi Day Foundation Marks Heroism, Defense of Freedom

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Filotimo, one of those Greek words that cannot really be translated, was the essence if the annual celebration of the courage of those who fight to preserve and promote freedom and democracy around the world of the Washington Oxi Day Foundation that was held October 23-25 in Washington, DC. The gathering was attended by people from across the country and around the world and culminated on October 24 in a Black Tie Dinner and Presentation of the Oxi Day and Battle of Crete Awards to Kenyan journalist and anti-corruption crusader John Githongo, and Cuban dissident and leader of the Women in White organization, Berta Soler, respectively. Children in the Hellenic world grasp the significance of the word - it means much more than the literal ?love of honor? - by the time they begin school, but the honorees, got it through the well-planned and presented events organized by the Foundation?s Founder and President, Andy Manatos, and his colleagues, including Mike Manatos, who welcomed the guests to the beautiful headquarters building the Organization of American States.
