Refugee Crisis: No Room To Bury The Drowned

The death toll from the European refugee crisis has grown so large that authorities are struggling to find places to bury the dead, according to the mayor of Lesbos. Speaking to the Greek radio station Vima FM, Spyros Galinos said there are more than 50 bodies in the island's morgue that do not have a burial place. He added that authorities are making arrangements to take over a field next to Lesbos' main cemetery to bury those who died trying to reach the island from nearby Turkey.

Deputy FM Mardas meets with Ukrainian Ambassador Volodymyr Shkurov

Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Mardas today met with Ukraine’s Ambassador to Greece, Volodymyr Shkurov, with whom he discussed issues of bilateral economic interest.During the meeting, which took place in a very friendly atmosphere, the need for further development of bilateral trade was acknowledged, and the shared will to enhance the economic relations between the two countries was reaffirmed. There was also an exploration of ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in specific sectors, including tourism, construction and food trade.

The Latest: Germany wants Greece 'hotspots' ready this month

The Czech Republic is sending a unit of 20 police officers to Slovenia to help the tiny Alpine nation cope with the influx of thousands of migrants and protect the external border of Europe's visa-free Schengen zone. Police spokesman Domagoj Dzigumovic said Monday that 8,400 entered on Sunday alone, which made it one of the busiest days since Sept. 16 when Hungary sealed its border with Serbia and the migrant route was diverted to Croatia. Ambulance workers are protesting on the Greek island of Lesbos, where state budget cuts have left only three vehicles in operation despite a massive daily influx of refugees. Costas Filis, head of the island's ambulance workers association, told The Associated Press that five ambulances were awaiting repairs and that staff shortages had forced rescuers to work up to 16 hours at a time. Greece's coast guard says it has rescued more than 1,400 people in 39 separate search-and-rescue operations in the eastern Aegean over the weekend. More than 70 people, many of them children, have died in the last week when their smuggling boats overturned or sank in rough seas as they tried to reach Greek islands from the nearby Turkish coast. Bavaria's governor is declaring himself satisfied, for now, with a weekend compromise with fellow conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel's party on how to handle Europe's migrant crisis. Horst Seehofer has been the most prominent critic of Merkel's welcoming approach to the refugees and had demanded government action by Sunday to limit the influx. The conservatives issued a joint paper calling for a reduction in the number of refugees arriving in Germany and for "transit zones" to weed out people who have no realistic claim to asylum. The deputy presidential spokesman, Zafar Hashemi, says as a signatory to the Geneva Convention, Afghanistan is obliged to accept its citizens whose asylum applications have been rejected.

Via Dave Lutz at JonesTrading, here's a super quick guide to what traders are talking about before markets open on Monday: Good Morning and welcome to Jobs Week!   US Futures are starting mixed this AM, continuing a theme which sees S&P up small but the Russell lagging.   European markets are mostly green, led by a 90bp pop in the DAX with EU Banks leading as Commerzbank returns to paying a divvy and Greek Stress Test results not as bad as feared.   Another Strong airline report being met with sharp selling as Ryanair drops 4%+, and Miners weigh on FTSE, with Glencore and BHP under pressure as China PMI comes in light – pushing London down 40bp in light Volume.  The standout market in Europe is Turkey, which sees markets up 5%+ as Erdogan’s party sweeps back to power with a surprise win.  Over in Asia, it was a sea of red thanks to weaker China data, hitting Shanghai for 1.7% - while Nikkei fell 2% as investors reacted toFriday’s BOJ - Financials and utilities weighed heavy (Japan closed for Culture Day tomorrow).   Aussie fell 1.4% as grocers continue to reel from Woolworths last week – while most Emerging Markets closed mixed.  The US 10YY has shot back to test Friday’s highs near 2.17% and the “Policy Sensitive” 2YY is climbing to 75bp and December Fed Funds show a “Coin Flip” as we await a slew of Fed Speakers this week, including Janet on Wednesday.   The Greenback is mixed, as the Pound jumping on strong British PMI – and $ losing slight ground against the Euro as Nowonty says the “ECB has to act” – but making gains against the Yen as the $/Y cross rebounds from the 120 level.   With the weaker $, we should hava  tailwind for commodities, but most metals are firmly red as Industrial exposed Platinum and Silver drop 1%+, and the Crude complex is off 1.5%+ on weaker China data.  Natty Gas is continuing its downward trajectory as heavy stockpiles coupled with mild weather have heavy selling continuing in the complex – knocking contracts off 3%+ early.  Ahead of us today, we get Markit US Manufacturing PMI at 9:45, ahead of the “official” ISM Manufacturing and Construction Spending data at 10 – At 11:30 the Treasury has a Auction of $28B in 3month and $26B in 6mnth Bills, just before Fed's Williams Gives Welcome Remarks at SF Fed Conference at 12.   At 2pm, we get the October 2015 Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey on Bank Lending Practices.  Down in Washington, the Court delivers orders at 9:30am, and at 2pm Treasury Secretary Lew convenes the latest meeting of the Financial Stability Oversight Council.
