Ayia Napa to Attempt Guinness Record

The municipality of Ayia Napa, Cyprus, is determined to make the resort a tourism trademark on a worldwide level. The region’s Mayor, Ioannis Karousos, revealed to the newspaper Fileleutheros, the city’s council decided that in August, Ayia Napa will host the biggest ever sirtaki dance event in an attempt to enter the Guinness book of records. The municipal authorities claim that the purpose of entering the Guinness book of records is the promotion and projection of the Island on a worldwide scale. In addition, this event will assist the authorities in making the name Ayia Napa heard throughout the world. The municipality’s cultural officer Maria Tofini, said that the initiative aims to restore the “crown” to Ayia Napa for the biggest dancing event featuring the sounds of Mikis Theodorakis “Zorba the Greek,” best known as sirtaki. Ayia Napa entered the Guinness book of records for the first time in September 2007, after its harbor hosted 268 dancers of all ages, locals and tourists, all dancing sirtaki. Since then, several cities have attempted to break the record with the number of participants rising steadily. Australia was the last to break the record two years ago when 1607 persons danced the “Zorba the Greek.” About 18 months ago the Volos municipality tried to win back the record for Greece but failed to outnumber the Australians. According to Maria Tofini, Ayia Napa’s municipality will not disclose any of its plans until the very last minute in order to avoid any possible imitators in the future. However, she mentioned that a great deal of preparations have already been made. Hundreds of dancers and members of cultural clubs and other associations from the free part of Famagusta have already expressed their enthusiasm to participate the event. Lakis Avraamides, spokesman of the Famagusta Tourism Development Company welcomed the initiative and urged the CTO and other bodies to support it.

Anti-terrorist Unit Sounds Alarm Due to Sakkas’ Letter

After the disappearance of Kostas Sakkas and the escape of Christodoulos Xeros, the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit has sounded the alarm since authorities believe that both terrorists will be reintroduced as “city rebels.” Kostas Sakkas, a known Greek terrorist is calling for resistance and rebellion with a letter published on an anti-authoritarian website. Meanwhile, Sakkas attacked Greek media for how they have presented his case when as he points out, he has not even been convicted in court. “The only proof some journalists need is that I have been found guilty by the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit,” he said in his letter, while also referring to the dirty journalist propaganda that aims to “create an atmosphere of terror and hysteria in order to mislead the public opinion.” Among other things, he denies having breached the restrictive conditions imposed on him, while he also said that his recent arrest by the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit was a way for Greek authorities to cover up the escape of Christodoulos Xeros. Finally, Kostas Sakkas, who was accused of participating in a terrorist organization, invited everyone to resist “the dominant moral that wants people to be subjugated with bowed heads in front of modern-day tyrants.” Consciousness bears the burden of historical responsibility, is the message which concludes his letter.

40 Greeks Dead from H1N1 Virus

The flu virus (H1N1) is showing an alarming upsurge. There have been 40 fatalities due to the virus, two of which were small children, while a total of 143 people appear to be infected and have been hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU). At the moment 59 people are being hospitalized in the ICU. Furthermore, according to recent news, three more people have been admitted in the ICU (two in the Venizelio hospital in Crete and one in Sotiria Hospital in Athens) and it is quite possible that they have the flu virus. However, in order to confirm this information, the hospitals need to conduct more laboratory testing. Experts from the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) estimate that the flu wave tends to reach its highest point and that it will gradually start to subside within the next few weeks. Meanwhile, meteorologists have predicted good weather for the next days, which is considered a positive conjuncture that will help decrease the power of the flu virus. However, doctors indicate that obese patients or people with chronic diseases that are presenting flu-like symptoms must immediately take antiviral drugs to treat the disease without waiting for laboratory results to confirm if they have the virus.
