A record number of containers were processed in July at Terminal 1, which is run by the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP). A total of 50,517 containers were handled during a single month, a record in OLP’s history. Management also revealed that productivity at Terminal 1 has increased by about 40% since 2009, with 161 containers now being processed each shift rather than 115. Chinese firm COSCO operates container handling terminals 2 and 3. The data were provided to journalists as the MSC London arrived at the port. It is the largest cargo ship to have docked in Piraeus, measuring 399 meters in length and the capacity to carry 16,652 containers. Greek Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis visited the port and said that Piraeus now has the ability to compete with the best ports in the Mediterranean. (source: ANSA)
