10th Athens Pride Festival Was ‘A Family Affair’

The LGBT community of Athens celebrated the 10th Athens Pride Festival with a parade on Sunday, June 14. The parade started in Klafthmonos Square at 7pm and ended in Syntagma Square, in front of the Greek Parliament. The Festival’s motto for this year was “A Family Affair”. The main goals of Athens Pride 2014 was to raise awareness in regards to the possibility of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transsexuals in creating a legally recognized family. “The Greek state continues to deprive us of this right. They deny us our rights even after the decision of the European Court of Human Rights on November 7, 2013, according to which ‘Greece had violated the European Convention on Human Rights, excluding same-sex couples from civil unions.’ Equal access to family law is a fundamental requirement for a modern democracy. Excluding citizens from civil unions, marriage, procreation and adoption on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, means the essential and selective exclusion from state protection and deprivation of the security it provides. As a result it shakes the stability of one’s personal life, while it burdens their everyday life both emotionally and financially,” stated the organizers. This year’s parade theme stressed the meaning of family as defined by any person in the LGBT community. For this reason, the poster for Athens Pride Festival 2014 shows the archetypal couple as Adam and Adam, united with their child, Eros, as an example of a LGBT family.

Tenth Athens Pride calls for equal rights to family

Hundreds of people on Saturday joined Greece's annual gay pride parade in a long-standing demand for equal rights to civil union and adoption. Titled "A Family Affair", the 10th Athens Pride held on central Klafthmonos Square was supported by nearly a dozen embassies including those of Britain, the United States and Canada. "This year, we focus on the concepts of equality and freedom of choice from the perspective of family life as defined by every LGBT person, and specifically on the legal recognition of all LGBT families," the organisers said.

Colombia vs. Greece: Final score 3-0, Los Cafeteros dance past impotent Greece

Source: www.sbnation.com - Saturday, June 14, 2014 Colombia took full advantage of Greece's attacking impotence to run out 3-0 winners in their World Cup opener. Colombia kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 3-0 victory over Greece in Belo Horizonte. It was a strange game in which Greece saw much of the possession and regularly looked untroubled by the victors, though Fernando Santos ' outfit flattered to deceive and were twice made to pay for their eternal attacking impotence. It took only six minutes for Colombia to break the deadlock, with Juan Cuadrado's low cross from the right dummied by James Rodríguez and promptly dispatched from the edge of the area by fullback Pablo Armero , via the leg of defender Kostas Manolas . Los Cafeteros celebrated with the best dance you'll see at this World Cup, though their joy should've been swiftly cut short. Within a minute of the opener, Greece's Panagiotis Kone found space on the edge of the box, only to slice his effort way over the crossbar. It was a miss Greece would be made to regret, as they toiled away for the remainder of the half without creating as good a chance. Colombia were quite happy to let them dominate possession, safe in the knowledge that with midfielders Abel Aguilar and Carlos Sánchez sitting comfy in front of the defence, they'd be very difficult to penetrate. Their goalkeeper David Ospina was only called into action right at the end of the first half, with a speculative effort from Kone clawed away from danger. All Related

Loverdos-Mitsotakis Dispute Over Public Sector Layoffs

The Greek government has bought a few more days time in order to settle the dispute concerning the suspensions and layoffs of university administrative employees. PASOK expressed doubts about the number of public sector employees that the coalition government should sack in order to meet troika’s targets. After an amendment that was passed through the House of Parliament, the government postponed until next Friday, June 20, instead of this Sunday, the decision to dismiss or not the 1,134 university administrative employees who were part of the government’s mobility scheme. Meanwhile, the newly appointed Education Minister, Andreas Loverdos, supported by Evangelos Venizelos said that the government should rehire 880 university administrative employees, while the Greek Minister of Administrative Reform, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, argued that no more than 500 employees can return to their positions. The dispute between the two ministers has now reached its peak, with people close to Loverdos stating that Mitsotakis “is not aware of the political balances” because he is not actually a politician. On the other hand, people close to Mitsotakis are attacking the Greek Education Minister, mentioning that when he was the Minister of Health during Papandreou’s government, he had stated that “the one million public sector employees who keep causing trouble for 10 million people, thinking that their jobs are safe for life,  is what brought our country to this position.” The Ministry of Administrative Reform has hinted that the number of employees who will be rehired may increase from 500 to 600 but Loverdos’ suggestion to rehire 880 employees cannot be met under any circumstances, because then the government would have to lay off other public sector employees in order to meet troika’s targets. The dispute between the two ministers is part of PASOK’s change in attitude towards the austerity measures. According to Greek news, PASOK’s leader, Evangelos Venizelos has doubt about the layoffs of 7,000 public sector employees, even though last year the government agreed to sack 15,000 public sector employees by the end of 2014.

Greece Is One of the 196 Countries Monitored by Germany

According to Greek news, Greece is among the 196 countries that are currently being monitored by the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND). Considering Germany’s strong opposition when Snowden revealed the U.S. spying activities, this came as a surprise. As it was reported after several German documents came to light, BND has been monitoring internet activity in various countries, through e-mail and internet telecommunications. According to newspaper Ta Nea, the revelations surfaced when the relevant documents were filed during a dispute between a German lawyer and BND. It was revealed then that BND monitors internet activity in order to track international terrorist activity, however the extent of foreign target monitoring was not made clear. The German lawyer sued BND because he thought that his communication via e-mail with foreign customers may be a target of the agency’s monitoring, while he also believes that BDN did not have the right to spy on him, since he is a German citizen. Besides Greece, there are 195 more countries and regions which are part of the list of countries that have been monitored by Germany since April 2010. Three Greek telecommunications companies are currently co-operating with DE-CIX, the largest telecommunications provider in Germany. The three Greec companies are OTEGlobe, Forthnet and Cyprus’ CYTA. According to the German magazine Spiegel, BND has been monitoring Greece through these intrnet providers. Furthermore, they have also been collaborating with major internet companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Amazon, Yahoo, Ebay and LinkedIn.

China's last drive to join the outer world : the soccer World Cup

On Friday 13th of June, 19 million Chinese were watching the soccer match Brazil-Croatia (3-1) in Saõ Paolo, opening the Copa do mundo or soccer world cup which is  the most fanatically followed soccer tournament in the world –the European version of “football”. This huge audience tuned in despite the late hour in china (4 am) and the fact that the national team had been eliminated and was not among the 32 teams in the final round. Due to the high price of the packages to the Copa (from 8000 to 126,000 dollars), only a few thousand Chinese can afford the adventure. The next best solution for these armies of frustrated aficionados is to join in bars late night, wearing the most glamorous teams’ jerseys (a hot sale on online shopping sites). Companies like UCWeb, an internet company from Guangzhou, provide days off and other facilitating provisions, “ to foster company culture”, as one executive explains. For many other fans, the internet provides fake sick leave certificates, their credibility varying with the price. In Shanghai for instance, at 16-48$ a piece, the document includes the name of respectable hospitals and the red stamp of public administration. Hospitals, on their own side, provide free verification.  The internet is taking the lion’s share on the Cup’s attendance: until the concluding match at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro (13th of July), experts expect 530 million clicks. Tencent alone, one of the major social networks (Weixin-WeChat is their main stream) sends 50 journalists, and all Chinese media together have sent no less than 500 crew-members. Tmall, the merchandizing portal, paid 23 million dollars to sponsor the ranking, and Nike paid 46 million just to be quoted systematically in the CCTV reportages. A number of industrialists also cash in, on low cost gadgets, like the national flags (400,000 printed), the “Faleco” mascots, and the “caxirola”, traditional percussion instrument have been exported by the millions. Yingli has equipped two main stadiums with solar panels and is the only Chinese sponsor of the Cup.  During the event, all kinds of soccer-promoting ideas are raised in China. In Shandong province in eastern China the city of Zibo claims to be the place of origin of the game. More than two thousand years ago on its soil, the Kingdom of Qi (-1046 to -221 bc) had created “cuju”, with ball and rules arguably similar to soccer. Cuju is then claimed to have spread to ancient Greece, and eventually England. Curiously, Sepp Blatter, the President of the FIFA is supporting the claim: understandably, he is one of the most popular foreigners in Zibo – less so in the UK.
