A new $524 million arena has put added pressure on one of the NBA's rising teams to take the next step

[peter feigin]Jeffrey Phelps/AP * THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS WILL MOVE INTO A NEW $524 MILLION ARENA NEXT FALL THAT THEY HOPE WILL HELP USHER IN A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE FRANCHISE. * WITH THE MOVE COMES ADDED PRESSURE TO WIN OVER FANS AND BUILD A CHAMPIONSHIP-CONTENDING TEAM. * THE BUCKS HAVE ALREADY SWUNG A BIG TRADE THIS YEAR AND MAY LOOK FOR MORE IN HOPES OF TAKING THE NEXT STEP. ------------------------- In the fall of 2018, the Milwaukee Bucks will move into a new $524 million arena in the city's downtown — a glassy, tastefully designed building that's part of an entertainment block with shops, restaurants, a beer garden, and residential space. Team officials are excited for the building and the economic benefits they say will come with this new space. But with such an investment — $250 million of which will come from taxpayers, not including interest — comes additional pressure to enter that building as a good team. The Bucks are one of the NBA's rising teams, fresh off a 42-40 season and playoff appearance that caught many by surprise. Now the goal is to continue building, to make the playoffs for consecutive years for the first time since 2004. "I think there's always pressure to win," Bucks GM Jon Horst told Business Insider. Horst, who was promoted to GM this past offseason, said the team's benchmarks for improvement won't necessarily be measured in wins and losses — he hopes to see internal development in skills and culture. "It's not always a linear thing where you have to win 41 games one year, 44 the next, 47, 50, and then it's just linear between rebuild to championship." Still, in November, the Bucks swung a trade for point guard Eric Bledsoe, adding a young, dynamic guard who represents a skill upgrade at the position. The Bucks, with their young team filled with long, multi-position players, were clearly looking to win more games this season. "100%" Bucks president Peter Feigin told Business Insider of how much the new arena weighs into a decision to make a win-now move. "The success of the team is an accelerant to our success and growth as a company. Eric Bledsoe's trade and ability to kind of create more exciting basketball ... How does that affect fans? How do we attract more fans? How do we continue to improve? Does getting Eric allow us to get past the second round of the playoffs for the first time in a decade? Those are big, big deals." Horst, despite saying he doesn't want to measure improvement in linear terms, also admitted he would like the team to make the playoffs and advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001. IT ALL BEGINS WITH GIANNIS. [giannis]Streeter Lecka/GettyGiannis Antetokounmpo's impact on the Bucks is felt in many ways. The 23-year-old positionless Greek monster has become a top-10 player and MVP candidate and seems to still be improving. Feigin said Antetokounmpo's rise over the past 12 months has been so great that it caught some Bucks staffers off-guard. Now in the first year of a four-year, $100 million contract extension, the Bucks are building around their franchise player. "We've got the Giannis Effect definitely in place," Feigin said, adding, "What it does is give us a platform that we’ve never really had before. And it's really an accelerant to grow the brand to grow the reach of the team." Feigin said their initial "grassroots" marketing plan for the team was flipped upside down by the success of Antetokounmpo. The Bucks found it had a star that had national and international appeal, forcing them to turn their attention inward and reclaim a fanbase Feigin described as "semi-dormant." Antetokounmpo serves as the face of the franchise, a star capable of attracting fans and future free agents. Horst said that free agents want to play with great players like Antetokounmpo. He's hoping the team's new facilities are the second part of that equation. 'PLAYERS WANT TO "LIVE AND PLAY" IN SOMETHING THAT’S THE BEST.' The Bucks believe there's real basketball value in having a new arena and new facilities. This past year, the team opened the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Science Center, a multi-level, amenity-filled training center located across the street from the incoming arena. [jon horst]Morry Gash/AP"I truly believe it that facilities matter when it comes to recruiting talent in free agency," said Horst, adding, "Players want to 'live and play' in something that's the best." The Bucks hope all of this — the superstar, the rising team, the new facilities, the entertainment block — change the perception of Milwaukee around the league. That a traditionally small-market team that's struggled to attract big free agents can become a free-agent destination.  "Money and market obviously matter," Horst said. "They're always gonna be factors. But just like they're factors, I truly believe facilities are a factor as well." A championship-contending team that attracts top talent would ease some of the pain that came with getting the arena deal done. In July of 2015, Wisconsin approved the public financing for the Bucks' new arena. The vote was controversial, as is often the case when taxpayers help pay for a new arena, with opponents saying the economic benefits of professional sports arenas are overstated. Not to mention the estimated $4 billion net worth of controlling owners Marc Lasry and Wes Edens (per Forbes). Feigin, however, disagrees with the studies that have argued against publicly funded arenas. "We think it's obviously a benefit to the public good," Feigin said of the arena. "I mean what this arena did was really become a catalyst, and we pitched it as a catalyst, of economic development; in a very short time it has become one." Feigin said the Bucks did not want to build an "island" like past teams have — an arena or stadium somewhere off a highway that offered little for fans to do otherwise. Those "islands," Feigin said, are the source of the studies that say stadiums' economic benefits are exaggerated. "For us, success is density," Feigin said. "So, how do we build this arena, how do we make it a centerpiece for 200 events a year? But more importantly, how do we activate the entire area for 365 days a year? And to do that you need people living and working there every day." [bucks arena]Carrie Antlfinger/AP Feigin worked as vice president of marketing for Madison Square Garden from 1999 to 2004. He laughs at the contrast between Milwaukee and New York. "You would really have to work incredibly hard and be really inept or really try to screw things up not to be able to be successful in an 18-million person metro demographic area," Feigin said of his experience in New York. He added: "Whereas today, we almost cherish every fan interaction. Like, every engagement is priceless." This is one of the Bucks' challenges. New York will always have Knicks fans, loyal, regardless of team success (which has arguably been less than what the Bucks have experienced over the past decade). In Milwaukee, the Bucks can't just coast. "It's really fan development 101," Feigin said. The Bucks seek to create a winning team, a championship team with championship culture. They seek to win over fans with a great team and with a world-class arena. There are stakes, and it's not guaranteed they'll be successful. In June, ESPN's Zach Lowe and Brian Windhorst reported that there had been some infighting amongst Bucks ownership about the direction of the team, particularly with the hiring of the next GM. They eventually agreed to promote Horst, though he was reportedly not the first choice. Horst and Feigin both say everyone is on the same page from the owners down to the coaches. They all have the same goals and the same ideas of how to accomplish those goals. But clearly this is a team with expectations, and those expectations are getting ramped up as they try to take the next step and open a new chapter in franchise history. The Bucks are on the clock. This fascinating map shows which languages take the most and least time to learn for native English speakers

[japanese japan tokyo]Ryo Matsubara/Flickr * BASED ON THEIR EXPERIENCE TRAINING US DIPLOMATS, THE FOREIGN SERVICE INSTITUTE (FSI) DIVIDED ALL THE LANGUAGES THEY TEACH INTO FOUR DISTINCT CATEGORIES. * THE HIGHER THE CATEGORY, THE "HARDER" THE LANGUAGE IS TO LEARN FOR A NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER. * CATEGORY I LANGUAGES SUCH AS SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE ARE AMONG THE EASIEST ONES TO BECOME PROFICIENT IN. * "SUPER-HARD" CATEGORY IV LANGUAGES INCLUDE ARABIC, CANTONESE, AND KOREAN, WHICH GENERALLY REQUIRE 88 WEEKS OF FULL-TIME STUDY TO LEARN. * REDDIT USER FUMMY RECENTLY COMPILED THE FSI'S RANKINGS INTO TWO FASCINATING MAPS. -------------------------   If you want to pick up a new language in a short amount of time, you may want to start with Portuguese instead of Korean.  According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), a native English speaker would need around 24 weeks to learn the former. To learn the latter, however, the speaker would need to study the language for more than a year and a half, or about 88 weeks. Based on their experience training US diplomats, the FSI divided all the languages they teach into four distinct categories. The higher the category, the more classroom hours a student would need to reach a "general professional proficiency" in both speaking and reading the language. Or, in simplest terms, the higher the category, the "harder" the language is to learn for a native English speaker. Reddit user Fummy recently compiled the FSI's rankings into two fascinating maps: one focuses on Europe; the other includes the rest of the world (for which data was available). Take a closer look below. FIRST, HERE ARE THE HARDEST AND EASIEST LANGUAGES TO LEARN FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS IN EUROPE. [foreign service institute language difficulty map europe]Courtesy of Fummy/Reddit While the FSI divides the languages they teach into four official categories, Reddit user Fummy used six different categories for the purposes of these maps. Countries are colored in according to the difficulty of their official language. DARK GREEN (CATEGORY I): To reach proficiency in a Category I language, a native English speaker would need to complete around 24 to 30 weeks of full-time study. This category includes languages that are "closely related" to English, such as Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. LIGHT GREEN (CATEGORY II) AND LIGHT YELLOW (CATEGORY III): While the FSI classifies French as a Category I language, Reddit user Fummy included it as a Category II language on the map above since it generally takes 30 weeks, instead of 24 weeks, to learn. According to the FSI's official list, Category II languages are ones that generally take native English speakers "a little longer to master than Category I languages." These include German, Haitian Creole, Indonesian, Malay, and Swahili. On average, learners can look forward to 36 weeks of full-time study before reaching proficiency in these languages. On Reddit user Fummy's map, these are colored in light yellow as Category III languages. AND HERE ARE THE HARDEST AND EASIEST LANGUAGES TO LEARN AROUND THE WORLD. [foreign service institute language difficulty map world]Courtesy of Fummy/Reddit DARK YELLOW (CATEGORY IV): On the map, Category IV languages correspond to the FSI's official Category III languages. These are "hard languages" with "significant linguistic and/or cultural differences from English" that require around 44 weeks of full-time study to reach proficiency. Examples of Category III (or Category IV on the map) languages include Hindi, Hebrew, Greek, Farsi, Russian, and Czech. ORANGE (CATEGORY IV*): This group includes languages that are generally considered harder than the rest of their category to learn such as Estonian, Mongolian, and Vietnamese. LIGHT RED (CATEGORY V): The Category V languages on the map correspond to the FSI's official Category IV languages. These are "super-hard languages" that are "exceptionally difficult for native English speakers" to learn, including Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Korean. Generally, students require around 88 weeks of full-time study to reach proficiency in these languages. DARK RED (CATEGORY V*): On the map, this category only includes Japanese. _Sign up __here__ to get INSIDER's favorite stories straight to your inbox._ NOW WATCH: Why Korean parents are having their kids get plastic surgery before college
