NYC Officially Deems Hot Dogs And Burritos 'Sandwiches'

In France, a sandwich is called "un sandwich." In Spain, it's "un sándwich." Things get weird in Portugal where it's called "sanduiche". Even in Greece, the word is "σάντουιτς." And it turns out that sounds a whole lot like "sandwich." But just because inserting meat between two slices of bread is a near-universal concept, that doesn't mean it's free from the machinations of the New York Department of Taxation and Finance. In order to help businesses determine what they should and shouldn't put a sales tax on, the city has released a "bulletin" that

Turkey’s prime minister: Of generals, judges and presidents

In celebration of liberty THAT long-awaited “we told you so” moment arrived on June 18th for Dani Rodrik, an economist at Princeton University, and his wife Pinar Dogan. An Istanbul court ordered the release of 230 people, mostly army officers convicted of trying to overthrow the prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his Justice and Development (AK) government. Among them was Cetin Dogan, a retired general and Mr Rodrik’s father-in-law, sentenced in the “Sledgehammer” case.Mr Rodrik and his wife have campaigned hard to prove that much of the case, in which the generals supposedly planned to bomb mosques during Friday prayers and shoot down Greek fighters to justify a coup, rested on bogus digital evidence. Forensic experts concurred, in 25 separate reports. The constitutional court duly called for a retrial because the prosecution’s case was flawed and key defence witnesses were not allowed to testify, and the Istanbul court released the suspects.Coincidentally on the same day, an Ankara court sentenced Kenan Evren, a 96-year-old general and former president who led a violent coup in 1980, to life imprisonment. The same verdict was...

Schumpeter: Hit me baby one more time

SOON after Napster’s launch 15 years ago, in June 1999, the music-sharing service became America’s most talked-about firm, and one of the fastest-growing companies yet seen. Its teenage founders, Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, were commissaries of cool. But Napster’s glory was short-lived. Record labels pummelled it with lawsuits, saying that its peer-to-peer file-sharing technology, which made it easy for people to pirate music, was as dangerous and illegal as a punk rocker’s drug habit. In 2001 a court ruled that Napster helped facilitate copyright infringement. The firm later filed for bankruptcy and its brand was sold.Having become the music industry’s Antichrists, Messrs Fanning and Parker have spent the past 15 years trying to rebrand themselves and launch new ventures, with decidedly mixed results. Mr Parker says that having survived the “epic, Greek-tragedy failure” of Napster has endowed them both with “unnatural endurance”. Today he is by far the more famous of the Shawn-Seans, thanks to his eye for business opportunities and stomach for controversy. Mr Parker has made a habit of being bumped out of one company only to pop up in another. Napster’s board...
