Jamie Oliver’s jerk rice was a recipe for disaster – here’s how to make a great Caribbean marinade

The chef’s microwavable interpretation of Jamaican cuisine has been called out as cultural appropriation. But it’s not hard to make an authentically delicious jerk dish Jamie Oliver has given the world his take on cuisine from Spain, Italy, Sweden, Morocco, Greece, France and now Jamaica, but he’s caused an outcry with his new “Punchy jerk rice” – a microwavable rice product that has all the patois, but none of the flavour. Dawn Butler, the Labour MP for Brent Central, who has Jamaican parents, had strong words for Oliver on Twitter. “I’m just wondering do you know what Jamaican jerk actually is?”, Butler wrote. “It’s not just a word you put before stuff to sell products. Your jerk rice is not OK. This appropriation from Jamaica needs to stop.” Continue reading...

Europe sees sharp rise in measles: 41,000 cases, 37 deaths

BERLIN (AP) — The World Health Organization says the number of measles cases in Europe jumped sharply during the first six months of 2018 and at least 37 people have died. The U.N. agency's European office said Monday more than 41,000 measles cases were reported in the region during the first half of the year — more than in all 12-month periods so far this decade. The previous highest annual total was 23,927 cases in 2017. A year earlier, only 5,273 cases were reported. The agency said half — some 23,000 cases — this year occurred in Ukraine. France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Russia and Serbia also had more than 1,000 infections each.
