Death toll from Greek wildfire reaches 91 as village grieves

MATI, Greece (AP) — Fire officials in Greece raised the death toll from a wildfire that raged through a coastal area east of Athens to 91 and reported that 25 people were missing Sunday, six days after Europe's deadliest forest fire in more than a century. Before the national fire service updated the official number of fatalities, it stood at 86 as hundreds of mourners attended a Sunday morning memorial service for the victims in the seaside village hardest-hit by the blaze. The fire sped flames through the village of Mati without warning on July 23. A database maintained by the Centre for the Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters in Brussels shows it as the deadliest wildfire in Europe since 1900.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement on the burial ceremony for the remains of Greek soldiers who fell in the Greek-Italian war

We welcome with emotion the burial ceremony, held yesterday in the Albanian village of Bularat, for the remains of over 100 Greek heroes of the Greek-Italian war. This ceremony marks the historical vindication of the fallen Greeks whose souls can at long last rest in peace. The implementation of the relevant agreement is an important indication of progress in Greek-Albanian relations; progress that will lay the foundations for the development of the friendship and cooperation between our two peoples.

Greek firefighters criticize government over deadly blaze

Source: www.politico.eu - Sunday, July 29, 2018 The Greek government’s response to wildfires near Athens that killed 88 people was criticized by firefighters Sunday for “mistakes” and austerity measures that hampered their ability to tackle the blaze. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has faced criticism over his response to the disaster, but the comments from the head of the firefighters’ federation will pile more pressure on the Greek leader. “The government might be saying there were no grave operational mistakes, but what it isn’t saying is that there were thousands of small mistakes,” Dimitris Stathopoulos told The Observer. Among the problems were that the fire brigade’s advice to evacuate the area was not heeded and the meteorological service failed to warn of strong winds, incapacitating an aerial response to the flames, Stathopoulos said. The government’s poor response was also due to austerity measures, according to Strathopoulos, with 30 percent of fire trucks out of service due to budget cuts: “As firefighters we take an oath to protect people and their properties. We know when to recommend that areas be evacuated, but for some reason our recommendation was not heard. This is a huge tragedy for our country and apologies are owed.” The government’s decision to blame arsonists also backfired, with experts from the fire service saying this was not the cause, and opposition leaders criticizing the government for using the claim to shirk responsibility. Great wines for salad days

This glorious sunshine has been good news for salad growers with sales of green leaves going through the roof. Here are three top tipples to accompany your salad SEMÉLI NASSIAKOS, MANTINIA, GREECE 2017 (FROM £9.95, THE WINE SOCIETY; LEA & SANDEMAN) According to the cutely named association of British Leafy Salad Growers, this has been quite the summer for lettuce, rocket et al, with record-breaking sales of some 18m lettuces a week – 40% higher than the equivalent peak-leafy-salad season this time last year. What to drink with all this green freshness? That rather depends on what other ingredients you’re adding to the bowl. A classic salad of leaves and sharp but creamy goats’ cheese from the Loire is an invitation to be persuaded by some delicious evidence of the dictum “what grows together goes together” by pouring a glass of the riverbank-cool, grassy Loire sauvignon blanc, Domaine Naudet Sancerre 2017 (£14.99, Waitrose). But if you’re simply mixing up peppery and crunchy leaves with olive oil and lemon juice, the lightness and brightness of Seméli’s brisk, floral, melon and lemon-scented dry white from the moscofilero grape works beautifully. TAPADA DE VILLAR VINHO VERDE, PORTUGAL 2017 (£9.95, MARKS & SPENCER) For salads with more robust flavours – whether that means pungent vinegary and garlicky dressings or chilli and ginger spice– I tend to look for wines with either a bit more robustness of texture or (for the spicy heat) tongue-cushioning sugar. For a full-flavoured dish loosely inspired by salade niçoise, which might include olives, anchovies and capers as well vinegar and garlic in the dressing, another French local favourite pairing always does the trick: a Provence rosé such as the ever-wonderful, pretty, precise but punchy M de Minuty Rosé, Côtes de Provence 2017 (£13.99, or £11.99 as part of a mix six, Majestic). For a salad in a roughly Vietnamese style, with fish sauce, lime, chilli, garlic and plenty of coriander and mint, I find the very subtle dose of sweetness and the spritzy burst of tropical fruit and citrus, M&S’s vinho verde is a match of inspired tanginess. Men, stop boasting. Sex is much more than just a numbers game

Bedding innumerable women doesn’t mean a man is a great lover, so stop telling fibs to pollsters Why does having very many sexual partners mark men out as great in bed? Researchers from Glasgow University analysed the responses of 15,000 British men and women to a sex habits survey. Put simplistically, and allowing for exceptions, it seems that women are still inclined to go low when counting sexual partners, while men are more likely to go high. Which should shock precisely no one. Presumably, women who go low are aware of how promiscuous females are routinely judged more harshly than their male counterparts. Double standards aside, men are more likely to boast about high, sometimes very high, numbers of sexual partners. On _Love Island_, young men claiming to have big numbers (sometimes hundreds) of partners were treated like Greek gods, with barely any comment or even a suspicious question or two. (Such as: “How come you all have numbers that neatly end in a nought?”) It still seems accepted that the higher the number, the more successful, desirable and alpha a lover a man must be. But does that actually make sense? Continue reading...

Greece and California wildfires, record heat in Japan. Is there connection?
