McDonald's is selling an international hit in the US for the first time

[mcfloat]Kate Taylor For what appears to be the first time ever, McDonald's is selling the McFloat in the US. Select McDonald's locations in New York and Seattle are now serving up a float made with Dr. Pepper and soft-serve ice cream. "As part of our journey to build a better McDonald's, our franchisees have more flexibility than before to offer new menu items like breakfast bowls, Gilroy garlic fries and yes, the Diet Dr. Pepper Float," McDonald's spokesperson Terri Hickey told Business Insider.  The McFloat has been a hit for McDonald's around the world, served in  countries including India, the Philippines, and Indonesia. However, while McDonald's wasn't able to confirm that McDonald's has _never _served a McFloat in the US, the beverage has never been sold nationally and Business Insider was unable to find evidence of other local offerings of the float in America.  Internationally, the drink has been made with a wide variety of beverages. [mcfloat india]Kate Taylor The Coke McFloat seems to be the international go-to, but the chain also serves up options such as the Philippines' Green Apple Sprite McFloat and Indonesia's Iced Coffee Float. Instagram Embed: http://instagram.com/p/BBr0G4WxUvl/embed/ Width: 658px Instagram Embed: http://instagram.com/p/BGOlOhAGn-j/embed/ Width: 658px Most online reviews, including one by James McGowan, who has visited McDonald's restaurants in 53 countries, say it's a straightforward drink that tastes pretty much like you would expect ice cream plus soda to taste. If you like McDonald's soft serve and soda floats, you'll probably enjoy the McFloat — if your local restaurant ever decides to serve the sweet drink. [McFloat 2]Kate Taylor A medium Dr. Pepper Float is being sold for $1.99 in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Since the float is a local offer, if you're craving a comparable experience, you could buy a cup of Dr. Pepper ($1.29) and a vanilla soft serve ($1) and create a McFloat of your own for a comparable price. The debut of the McFloat in the US is part of a wider move at McDonald's to test more local options, such as garlic fries in San Francisco and Chobani Greek yogurt at 800 locations in California. The chain is also testing fresh beef in 14 restaurants — something that could be a game changer if expanded across the US. NOW WATCH: These are America's 2 most hated fast-food restaurants

Jim Chanos has a new thing that should 'scare the heck out of everybody'

[jim chanos] The good people of New York City's Harmonie Club decided to honor short seller James Chanos, founder of hedge fund Kynikos Associates, on Tuesday night for just generally being a mensch. Unfortunately, during his talk with Bloomberg TV's Scarlet Fu at Harmonie Club's dinner, Chanos did not have good news. This should surprise no one, given his status as Wall Street's most noted bear. He's turned his eyes on the US auto lending sector. "What we're seeing is in some markets lenders are lending 125% on used car values ... which should scare the heck out of everybody," he told Fu and his fellow diners at the club. We've noted in the past that things have gotten so bad in the oil industry that workers have stopped paying their car loans. "For a lot of workers who don't own a home, particularly in the Sun Belt or the energy sector, their car or their truck was their main asset," he continued. "That's seeming to turn down now." It's a turn it seems the entire market is taking, and Chanos also said that's going to bring out some funny behavior in corporate America. "It's very clear that what we see in terms of corporate behavior or fraud follows the financial cycle, but follows it with a lag," he said. "And the reason being that, as bull markets go on, more and more rational people suspend their sense of disbelief and want to get in on all kinds of schemes and things that in more rational times might make you want to keep your money in your wallet. And increasingly also managers feel they can get away with brazen behavior." Of course, when the money funding that behavior (from public or private markets) dries up, people start asking questions. And nobody likes questions. TMS celebrates 50 not out

Jun 15, 2016 Dubai, 15th June 2016:- This is the 50th edition of the TMS Newsletter and The Maritime Standard would like to thank all its readers for their support in helping reach this significant milestone. Clive Woodbridge, editor, says, “We are very grateful for the encouragement and positive feedback that our readers have given us. It is our aim to continue to improve the newsletter and we look forward to expanding and enhancing it further over the next 50 issues.” Since the first edition was published in June 2014, the TMS Newsletter has become one of the most widely read shipping and maritime online publications with a circulation of more than 30,000. While most of the circulation is in the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent it is now being read more widely, including subscribers in Norway, Germany, the UK, Greece and Singapore. As a result it is now a means by which to reach both local and international markets. Since that first edition, The TMS brand has expanded to include both Awards and Conferences. Preparations for the third TMS Awards, being held this October, are now gathering pace and nominations have been flooding in since the opening date on June 1st. Trevor Pereira, managing director, says, “The response has been very encouraging. These Awards truly represent the region, and are now a platform to promote this region to a wider geographical audience. Last year we had international visitors from over 70 countries and we expect at least the same again in 2016.” There will also be two Conferences this year, with The Maritime Standard Tanker Conference in Dubai on October 25th, followed by the second Maritime Standard Ship Finance and Trade conference on November 14th in Abu Dhabi. Trevor Pereira adds, “We are grateful for the support we have received from KOTC for the Tanker conference, with Sheikh Talal Al Khaled Al Sabah, the company’s chief executive, lines up as a keynote speaker; and Abu Dhabi Ports as host for the Ship Finance and Trade event. The technology that is out to disrupt Wall Street has been overhyped

[nightclub clubbing dance concert] Don't believe everything you hear about the benefits of blockchain technology. That's the message from Bob Garrison, the chief information officer at Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC).  The blockchain, a kind of distributed ledger, promises to improve security, lower costs and increase the speed of transaction settlement. You can read a fuller explanation here. Wall Street is abuzz with the potential benefits of blockchain adoption. Nasdaq CEO Bob Greifeld has said his company needs to be a "rapid applier" of the technology. Autonomous Research has called the technology a "game changer. Goldman Sachs has said the use of blockchain technology in stock trading could result in $6 billion in industry cost savings globally. But in a video posted on the DTCC website, Garrison was measured in his enthusiasm for the technology, pointing out that the adoption of blockchain still faces a number of challenges. Asked if blockchain technology could live up to the hype, he said: "Maybe. That is what we're going to find out." That's not to say that the blockchain doesn't have potential. The DTCC has been experimenting and testing the technology, completing a successful test with credit default swaps in April. It is just that the financial services industry is a complex one.  Here's Garrison (emphasis ours): I think we're going to learn a lot over the next few years. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THOUGH IS HOW THAT INNOVATION IN DISTRIBUTED LEDGER TECHNOLOGY MELDS WITH WHAT WE'VE HAD FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS, WHICH HAS BEEN A VERY STABLE, EFFICIENT, PROCESSING PLATFORM FOR THE INDUSTRY. While its not as optimized as it could be, it runs every day, it's very efficient. That's what we need to maintain going forward as we try to build bridges and also leverage the technology that distributed ledger has the potential to bring to the industry.  MOST OF THE PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE OF THE INDUSTRY THAT ARE MAKING CLAIMS ABOUT JUST HOW DISRUPTIVE IT CAN BE PROBABLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE INNER WORKINGS AND CHALLENGES THE INDUSTRY FACES. From not only the 40 years plus of what we've built but also the regulatory environment that we have to operate in to make sure the assets, the clients and the investments are safe and secure and are most importantly processing every day. This tallies with similar comments from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. Basically, the widespread rollout of this kind of technology is years away. Here is Morgan Stanley: We expect the financial institutions and their customers will adopt blockchain technologies asset class by asset class for validated proof of concepts (POC) efforts over the next 2-5 years in an iterative process that will likely last decades. In other words, take some of the more outlandish claims about blockchain with a pinch of salt.  _You can see a second video from the DTCC on the blockchain here._ SEE ALSO: EVERYONE ON WALL STREET HAS GOTTEN A LITTLE TOO EXCITED ABOUT A 'GAME CHANGER' TECHNOLOGY Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: FORMER GREEK FINANCE MINISTER: How I dealt with stress when Greece nearly defaulted

Big investors are taking their money out of hedge funds - here's where they're putting it instead

Investors are fleeing hedge funds and moving their money to a handful of private equity funds. A quarter of limited partners, or institutional private equity investors, plan to reduce their exposure to hedge funds in the coming year, according to a survey by investment firm Coller Capital. The firm polled more than 100 private equity investors and found that 36% of them are pouring into private equity, while infrastructure and real estate are also proving popular.   [pe1] It's worth noting here that Coller Capital is a private equity secondaries firm, providing liquidity in private equity markets. As such, one could expect them to take a brighter view of private equity investments and have a somewhat less favorable outlook on hedge funds. Regardless, these results seem to be more evidence for investors' lack of confidence in hedge funds, which have taken a beating amidst volatile commodity price and losses from big, concentrated bets. Prominent funds like Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital and David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital tumbled about 20% last year. Third Point's Dan Loeb described the first quarter of this year as "one of the most catastrophic periods for the industry" and warned of a "hedge fund killing field."  Billionaire Steve Schwarzman of the private equity giant Blackstone Group has said he has little sympathy for those struggling in the hedge fund world.  Hedge fund investors — including pensions, endowments, sovereign wealth funds, and insurers — have seen a massive mismatch between their expected returns and actual returns from their portfolios.  Many funds are lowering fees or offering other investor perks to compensate, but some investors are still fleeing.   In contrast, 79% of investors in the survey said they will not change their commitment to private equity despite the recent market volatility. An appetite for private equity can be seen from the nearly $10 billion fund that Leonard Green & Partners raised, as well as Blackstone's $18 billion global fund, and KKR's $11 billion fund.  That may be explained by the 11% or higher annual returns that a majority of investors have enjoyed since the inception of their private equity portfolios. One in five of the investors saw net returns of over 16%, according to the survey.  [pe2] Private equity firms have enjoyed startling growth over the past few years compared to hedge funds and other asset managers. Even though there may be a 'new normal' of slower growth going forward for the $3.5 trillion private equity industry, it still presents an attractive option for investors.  SEE ALSO: INVESTORS ARE SENDING A STRONG SIGNAL THAT THEY'RE TIRED OF TAKEOVERS Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: FORMER GREEK FINANCE MINISTER: How I dealt with stress when Greece nearly defaulted

There's a 'storm brewing' in the US economy

[Lightning thunderstorm las vegas] It could get ugly in the US economy before long. While everyone has been distracted by the strong labor market and the decent consumption, the real breakdown in the US economy has been coming from the corporate sector, which is what Paul Mortimer-Lee of BNP Paribas argues in a note titled "US Growth: Storm Brewing?" "Why have so many, including the Fed, not seen the risks that now appear all too concrete?" asked Mortimer-Lee, chief US economist at BNP. "The answer is that they have been looking in the wrong direction, lulled into a sense of complacency by strong jobs growth and solid consumption. What this view has overlooked is that the threat of recession comes from the corporate sector." According to Mortimer-Lee, the drop in profits in the corporate sector typically presages a recession. In this case, the stagnant inflation has reflected an inability of US companies to increase prices to the level necessary to maintain profits while labor costs have been rising. Said another way, companies are paying employees more, and they can't hike prices to keep up with the rising cost. Thus, profits fall. This increase, according to Mortimer-Lee, is strikingly like the lead-in to the 2001 recession, which was preceded by a drop in corporate profits. "We believe that in an economy with a significant profit-oriented private sector, the rate of profit and its dynamic is a key determinant of the business cycle," Mortimer-Lee wrote. "While some have argued that cycles don’t die of old age, declining rates of profitability are often a sign that the economy is very sick, no matter what the age of the recovery." The argument on this leading to a recession is one that we've noted before. Corporations respond to falling profits by cutting capital expenditures and investments in their businesses. If you're not building new things, there is no need for new workers, so hiring slows and workers begin to conserve their income. Consumption falls, and the whole thing tumbles down. [Screen Shot 2016 06 15 at 8.26.05 AM] "But capex has been weak recently. Oil investment plays a part, of course, but the bigger picture seems to us to be that previously weaker corporate profitability as a share of GDP is beginning to feed into weaker capex with a lag," Mortimer-Lee wrote. "Frequently, such episodes do not end well." Add that the stock market stumbles last August and at the beginning of the year have made companies warier of financial conditions and you've got a worrying number of clouds on the horizon. Thus, Mortimer-Lee projects that the risk of recession over the next 12 months is somewhere between 40% and 50%, depending on how terrible the incoming labor market data looks. This isn't a majority, and thus not the most likely outcomes, but the likelihood is certainly spiking in an uncomfortable direction. "We will need to hang on to our hats, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride," Mortimer-Lee wrote. "The risk of recession is rising, though this is not currently our central case." There's a new competition on Wall Street

[Babies crawl during the Baby Race to mark international Children's Day in Vilnius, Lithuania, June 1, 2016. REUTERS/Ints Kalnins] There's a new number by which to measure Wall Street banks: the amount of parental leave they offer employees.  On Wednesday, Barclays became the latest bank to adjust its policies, announcing that non-primary caregivers will get six weeks of leave, up from one.   "We recognize the importance of our people in the continued success of Barclays and these enhancements support our culture of building a flexible work environment," Joe McGrath, CEO of Barclays Americas, said in a statement.  Under the new policy: * Non-primary caregivers will get six weeks of paid leave following their child's birth, adoption or foster care placement. The leave may be taken in two segments in the year.  * Primary caregivers will still get 16 weeks of paid leave, but will be able to take the leave in two segments within one year of the event.  * Employees who are called to active military duty will now get 100% of their Barclays pay, less any military pay offset, for up to five years while under an approved Military Leave. Numerous banks have been changing their parental-leave policies as of late. Goldman Sachs provides 16 weeks of fully paid maternity leave, according to its website, and last year it increased its paid parental leave for non-primary parents to four weeks. Morgan Stanley provides 16 weeks of paid parental leave to primary caregivers. JPMorgan last year upped fully paid parental leave for primary caregivers in the US to 16 weeks from 12. Citi offers 13 weeks of pregnancy leave and two weeks of parental leave for secondary caregivers. And in March, Bank of America told its workers that it would increase fully paid maternity, paternity, and adoption leave in the US to 16 weeks from 12. The changes are being made to try to help workers maintain a better work-life balance, and to make the firms more attractive places to work.
