Golden Dawn Keeps Lock On Third

Its leaders are locked up or arrested, its message discredited by human rights organizations, the government trying to dismantle it, but the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party still took third in European Parliament elections and won three seats in Greece’s representation in Brussels. While the party’s showing was generally downplayed in Greece after it won 9.3 percent of the vote – up from 6.97 percent it won in the 2012 national elections when it gained 18 seats in the Greek Parliament – the extremists officials were clearly gloating after the results showed they weren’t dead yet. “Golden Dawn is the third political power in Greece, it’s the only party that shows such a steep rise,” said Ilias Kasidiaris, the Golden Dawn spokesman, who, along with the rest of its hierarchy is facing charges of running a criminal gang. The party denies it has neo-Nazi leanings, although Kasidiaris has a swastiko tatoo, Hitler’s Mein Kamp has been in its playbook, and prosecutors said they’ve uncovered evidence party leaders were following Nazi metholodogy in organizing itself. Speaking next to the party flag – the ancient Greek meander which resembles the symbol of the Third Reich – he delivered a message from Nikos Michaloliakos, the party leader and a member of Greek Parliament who is currently in jail pending trial. “I congratulate you for managing to resist the government’s terrorism and for not believing their lies,” the message read, according to the British newspaper The Guardian. “We are the only political power that actually stands up against our state being run by foreign powers. New Democracy paid the price for their policies against our people and their lies and SYRIZA has failed to express the public anger,” it said in reference to the ruling Conservatives and the major opposition Leftists who won the battle for Brussels. “Golden Dawn is now the third pole in the political life of the country. Our slogan was the thieves should be in prison and the money they embezzled returned to the people but the thieves managed to put us in jail. They tried to dig a grave for us but they fell in it themselves,” the message added. Defiant still, Michaoliakos repeated party demands that Greece end bailout deals with the Troika of the European Union-International Monetary Fund-European Central Bank (EU-IMF-ECB) that put up 240 billion euros ($327 billion) but forced the government to instill harsh austerity in return. The anti-bailout stance, along with jingoism and railing against (and even, critics said, attacking) immigrants made Golden Dawn resonate with people disenfranchised with mainstream parties and angry over big pay cuts, tax hikes, slashed pensions and worker firings. Golden Dawn tried to soften its image before the election and rose at the same time as other nationalist parties, including the National Front, which won big in France. Analysts maintain insist that the majority of their voters chose the party as a “protest vote” and not because they endorsed their “fascist ideology” and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said he wanted to woo its voters, who he too said were not Nazis but disgruntled. Golden Dawn slid in popularity last year after one of its members was arrested in the murder of an anti-fascist hip-hop artist and had fallen behind the new populist To Potami (The River) movement in pre-election surveys but rebounded once again, like the Phoenix of the Greek military junta that ruled from 1967-74 and which it reveres.

Independent Greeks and DIMAR Seek Electoral Defeat Clues

Greece’s opposition parties Independent Greeks and DIMAR are trying to determine the causes of their diminished electoral appeal, in the aftermath of Sunday’s European Parliament elections. Independent Greeks look for answers The opposition Independent Greeks party parliamentary group is to convene on Wednesday to discuss the party’s European elections result, which saw its share of the vote more than halved since the June 2012 general election from 7.51 pct to just 3.45 pct. The meeting will be chaired by party leader Panos Kammenos and will be followed by a meeting of the party’s Executive Bureau. In statements to the ANA-MPA, Kammenos said he was troubled by his party’s losses and intended to hold an “open conference” – probably in September – aiming to unite “anti-memorandum patriotic forces”. Kammenos estimated that the independent Greeks had lost some 200,000 votes since the 2012 elections, while smaller parties had gained some 450,000 votes. Some of those ‘lost’ votes, according to Kammenos, went to main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) and Golden Dawn but others went to smaller parties of the right, such as the Union for the Homeland and the People, which had not gained a sufficient percentage of the vote to exercise influence but constituted a “serious political force” when combined. He said the Independent Greeks would extend an invitation to these parties to cooperate at the planned conference. Sources noted that Kammenos has already set in motion a radical overhaul of his party, starting with asking for the resignations of his closest aides. One Independent Greeks MP, meanwhile, told ANA-MPA that “everything must be discussed, especially all our mistakes and omissions,” and indicating that this must include the party’s leadership. DIMAR soul-searching Opposition Democratic Left (DIM.AR) president Fotis Kouvelis on Monday launched a round of meetings with leading party cadres to assess Sunday’s weak election performance and pinpoint the causes that led to the party’s poor showing. A joint meeting of the party’s executive committee and parliamentary group is scheduled for Friday, while the central committee will meet over the weekend to assess the election result and the party’s manoeuvres since it left the government coalition a year ago. After the negative results on Sunday, certain DIMAR cadres have expressed the view that the party’s leading team should assume responsibility for the mistakes made and make the turn toward the centre-left grouping. Speaking on Athens radio station “Athina 9.84”, DIMAR central committee secretary Spyros Lykoudis said, after clarifying that his party did not have a contract to stay in the coalition government forever, that “a large section of our voters did not understand why and how we left the coalition government”. He also said that another reason that led to the party’s crushing defeat was the fact that DIMAR scorned the open dialogue aimed at a reconstruction of the centre-left. Lykoudis spoke of “political distance” between himself and DIMAR leader Kouvelis, noting that the party president has made a lot of mistakes. (source: ανα-μπα)

Turkish Ships Violate Greek Territorial Waters

Five Turkish naval vessels trespassed into Greek territorial waters Monday in the area of the Cyclades, as part of an exercise “Beyaz Firtina 2014″ in the central Aegean. They gradually moved sequentially outside their designated areas and entered Greek territorial waters. The frigate Kemal Reis and the four gunboats Meltem, Imbat, Ruzgar, and Firtina were moving north of Naxos, south of Paros and south-east of Santorini from early Monday morning until 4pm. The Turkish ships were followed within Greek territorial waters by the Greek navy, under the scrutiny of two pairs of air force F-16s.

Vote denotes the growing disunity of the European Union

BERLIN — From France and Britain to Denmark and Greece, voters may have just put the brakes on the Golden Age of European integration.

Stunned leaders across the region were grappling Monday with the aftershocks of Sunday’s vote for the 751-member European Parliament that saw a record number of seats go to once-fringe parties bitterly opposed to a united Europe. The results presented the region’s mainstream parties with a reality check: Maybe Europeans aren’t quite as eager as their leaders think they are to forge a joint future.

Pranksters Give Syntagma Square a Bubble Bath

Syntagma Square was covered in foam within minutes Sunday night, when someone threw soap into the fountain that stands in the middle. Dozens of firemen showed up to stop the bubble bath, but foam kept springing from the fountain. The square had to remain closed until the firemen washed away all the foam and replaced the water from the fountain. A police representative said: “We are studying CCTV footage. This is a serious offence, it is not something that can be dismissed as a joke. Those involved face a jail term if convicted.” The fountain is one of Athens’ most famous monuments. It has been an attractive landmark for tourists and a popular meeting point for locals. It is located in the historic Syntagma Square, the oldest and socially most important square of Athens. The square was named after the Constitution (Syntagma in Greek) that King Otto was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprise on September 3, 1843. Thus, the square holds a significant political meaning. It is worth mentioning that the Greek Parliament stands across from Syntagma Square. Athens Mayor Georgios Kaminis‘ offices are also located there.

Spain's New Left-Wing Party Scored One Of The Most Stunning Victories In The European Elections

One of the most stunning victories from the European elections held on Sunday came from Spain's new left-wing, anti-austerity party, which celebrated its wins Sunday night only three months after its formation.

According to The Financial Times, Podemos stunned analysts and pollsters by winning 8% of the vote and capturing five seats in total. In some regions, including Madrid, it now stands as the third-largest political force — behind only the ruling Popular Party of prime minister Mariano Rajoy and the opposition Socialist Party.

Podemos (in English, "We Can") accrued a shocking amount of votes in large part thanks to younger voters, turned out in big numbers to support the Podemos party that has ridden a wave of anti-establishment sentiment.

The face of Podemos is 35-year-old Pablo Iglesias, who has helped build the party's media presence.

Iglesias has been especially critical of Germany and its economic leaders for their austerity-led response to the recent financial crisis in Europe. He has said he wants Spain's leaders to move away from that path.

"From tomorrow, we will work together with other partners from southern Europe to say that we don’t want to be a colony of Germany and the troika," Iglesias told supporters Sunday night, referring to the tripartite committee led by the European Commission with the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Podemos is expected to be an ally of Alexis Tsipras’s anti-austerity Syriza party in Greece, which won the biggest share of the vote in Greece, along with six more seats.

The European Parliamentary Elections Provide Stability and Warnings

There are two ways to look at the European Parliamentary elections that concluded today. 1. Political stability Contrary to what many media will display this Monday, the results of the elections show a remarkable stability. The three major political families of Europe (Conservative, Socialists and Liberals) will likely reach at least 60 percent of the 751 seats of the Assembly. While that majority narrowed from 70 percent, this vote ensures the continuity of Europe and its institutions, a commitment to market economy and a critical support to the Eurozone. It is remarkable that such a diverse continent with 29 Member States could provide stability and, even more unlikely, coherence between three political families that have been dominating the European nations since World War II. Europeans like Europe. It should dispel the image carried often enough by U.S. politicians or media of a politically unreliable partner for the United States. Europeans are closely united around values such as social justice, peace and progress. They also believe in privacy ahead of security, history ahead of experimentation. Having such a powerful 500 million people political and economic partner should be a source of admiration rather than denigration by the American people. Yet countries who have centuries of conflicts against each other, speak as many languages as they have countries, and sometimes several per country, substantial national and regional characteristics will never be a unified counterparty. Complexity and diversity, however, do not translate into inconsistency and, for historic and modern reasons, many of the European and U.S values are rooted into common religious and social beliefs.2. Loud and serious warnings Not everything is good, however, in this election. The emergence of anti-European feelings in some countries resulted in an increase of the share of the Eurosceptics in the European Parliament from 5 to 10 percent. It would be wrong, however, to consider this emergence as a single movement. The themes are radically different in various countries, and will not provide a platform that will act with any form of common voice. • Anti immigration was core to the emergence of the UKIP as the leading UK party in this election as well as in the more moderate Danish extreme right leading position. • Anti austerity dominates the rhetoric in over-indebted Italy but without the emergence of an extreme right party. Greece sees a movement towards a now leading extreme left, not the extreme right. • France is a domestic situation dominated by the appalling records of the Socialists and the Conservatives who have consistently taken credit for European achievements and blamed them for their problems. The appalling leadership of Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande makes both leading parties co-responsible for this debacle that, worryingly, includes elements of racism. This is not the Tea Party, united in racism and militarism, pseudo-inspired by the Evangelism. However, it could create the same trend towards conservative radicalization.3. Redefining Europe's objectives: growth and employment The lack of good opinions in the modus operandi of the European institutions is, however, an underlying theme of these elections, and most importantly, in the massive abstentions of voters (56 percent). In turn, it increased the relative weight of the extremes. Europeans are fundamentally pro-European in their huge majority. However, the "deficit of democracy" is there. The European Parliament has no right of initiative. Only the European Commission, solidly locked by the Member States, enjoys that privilege. As Angela Merkel -- whose country strongly backed the leading parties -- declared during the campaign, Europe has to be an engine of growth and employment. Not with money, but with the right policies. That should now be the key objectives of European countries, building a competitiveness with Asia and America. For this reason, I hope that Martin Schultz, the German leader of the Socialist fraction, will become the new President of the Commission. The former President of the European Parliament has the right leadership and will work out the institutional paralysis of Europe that makes it hostage of unanimity. For all his personal qualities, Jean-Claude Juncker, albeit the candidate of the leading European party, the PPE, has too much baggage and bears a huge responsibility for the mismanagement of the European sovereign crisis.

Tsipras Tells Papoulias He Wants Elections

Major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras met with Greek President Karolos Papoulias on May 26, a day after his party won the European Parliament elections and said there should now be early national elections. SYRIZA beat the ruling New Democracy Conservatives of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras by 3.9 percent, which the Premier said was insignificant and didn’t warrant calling snap polls before the coalition government, that includes the PASOK Socialists, finishes its term in 2016. With almost all the votes counted, SYRIZA had 26.6 percent of the vote, against 22.7 percent for New Democracy. PASOK was tied to the new center-left alliance Elia, or Olive Tree, which gained 8 percent. The Socialists had been polilng as low as 3 percent before jumping on the Elia band wagon. Tsipras said that he told Papoulias if the results were translated to parliamentary elections the coalition would have 94 MPs rather than the 152 it has today, a bare two-vote majority in the 300-member Parliament. “This means there is a major disharmony between the public will and the representation in Parliament,” said Tsipras, adding that New Democracy and PASOK had seen their combined share of the vote fall by 11 percentage points since the June 2012 national elections. “We should go to national elections as soon as possible, in an organized and calm manner to restore democratic normality,” said Tsipras. The government countered that between them, New Democracy and PASOK, even as part of  Elia, still had a bigger percent of the votes than did SYRIZA. Tsipras said the EU ballot was a referendum on the harsh austerity measures the government imposed on the orders of international lenders but Samaras dismissed the argument. The SYRIZA leader said Samaras and his government “does not have a mandate to take a decision that commit the Greek people for years to come,” referring to upcoming debt relief negotiations with the Troika of the European Union-International Monetary Fund-European Central Bank (EU-IMF-ECB). Tsipras said he was “warning” Samaras that he should not adopt any more austerity measures, privatize public water companies and appoint a new Bank of Greece Governor or the country’s next European Commissioner without SYRIZA’s approval after the Leftists won only six seats in Brussels compared to five for New Democracy. PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos has labelled “unconstitutional” a request by SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras for early general elections. Venizelos held a news conference shortly after Tsipras met with President Karolos Papoulias. The PASOK leader said that in his suggestion that the European election results indicated a “disharmony” between the public will and the allocation of seats in Greek Parliament was based on an old version of the country’s constitution. Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou insisted that the result of the EU ballot could not be interpreted as a vote against the coalition. “If this were the case then government’s would not have four-year terms in any country,” he said. “Our responsibility before the constitution and the people is to fulfil this government’s mandate,” added Kedikoglou. “And, someone should tell Mr Tsipras that the article of the constitution he referred to was scrapped 28 years ago. By making reference to it he shows how much he lacks seriousness.” The neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, whose leaders have been arrested or jailed pending a trial on charges of running a criminal gang, will have three seats in the EU, while Elia, the KKE Communists and the new To Potami (The River) movement two and the Independent Greeks one.

Merkel says EU must create jobs to counter populist wave

By Andreas Rinke BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Angela Merkel expressed regret that populist parties had done well in EU elections and said it was up to governments in countries like France to win back voters with policies that foster growth, jobs and competitiveness. This is also the case for France," she said. "I think a course that focuses on competitiveness, growth and jobs is the best answer to the disappointment." Eurosceptic parties scored major victories in France, Britain, Greece and other European Union countries on Sunday. In Germany, the anti-euro Alternative for Germany (AfD), which was founded only a year ago, won 7 percent of the vote.
