The Summer Solstice And ‘Strawberry Moon’: What You Need To Know

Source: minnesota.cbslocal.com - Monday, June 20, 2016 The Summer Solstice is here – the longest day of 2016 for anyone living in north of the equator. Here in Minnesota, and around the rest of country, we’ll expect to see 15 hours of sunlight. The solstice, or official first day of summer, will commence at 22:34 UTC (5:34 CT). The sun will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer, the farthest north the sun gets in the sky. This year’s solstice is also marked with a strawberry moon, the first since 1967. The strawberry moon is when the full moon occurs in late June. This moon is no different than any other full moon, but this moon officially commences strawberry season. The next time this will happen is 2062. The summer solstice has many links to ancient cultural practices as different cultures have celebrated it being symbolic of renewal, fertility and harvest. In Greek mythology, the summer solstice specifically pays tribute with the Prometheia Festival or gifting Athena’s statues. All around the world many cultures celebrate the summer solstice with feasts, picnics, dance, and music. A drugmaker’s shares are crashing after its cat-allergy drug failed

[kitten] Sorry, sniffly cat lovers. Shares of biopharmaceutical company Circassia plunged 64% in London on Monday after it said its cat allergy drug was no more effective than a placebo. Circassia was conducting a late-stage trial of the drug, which means it had already shown some promise. Allergies are your immune system's response to a substance that may not be harmful to others. Circassia's treatment is an immunotherapy, which is meant to counter that immune system response and make allergies less severe.  "We are surprised and disappointed by these results," Circassia's CEO Steve Harris said in a statement. "Such a dramatic placebo effect was not a feature of our earlier phase II studies. However, in this large-scale trial it eliminated the ability to identify a treatment effect despite dramatic improvements in subjects’ allergy symptoms and rescue medication use." The drugmaker makes other allergy treatments, including grass, dust mite and ragweed allergies, all using similar technology, which means this trial results could have major implications on the others. Harris said the next step will be to figure out what went wrong, and what it means for the other ongoing trials.  [Screen_Shot_2016 06 20_at_9_45_23_AM]   SEE ALSO: WE ASKED HEALTHCARE LEADERS FOR THEIR BEST CAREER ADVICE — AND WHAT THEY SHARED APPLIES BEYOND THEIR INDUSTRY SEE ALSO: A COMPANY IS DEVELOPING A NEW WAY TO GENETICALLY MODIFY CROPS — AND IT COULD BE THE FUTURE OF FOOD Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: FORMER GREEK FINANCE MINISTER: How I dealt with stress when Greece nearly defaulted

Byron Wien shares the most important investing advice he learned from his late mentor

[byron wien] Blackstone's vice chairman and investing guru, Byron Wien, believes in concentrated bets. He learned that from his mentor, Edgar de Picciotto, the founder and chairman of Union Bancaire Privée, who passed away in March. De Picciotto taught him "diversification is for the weak minded," and that "concentration in the ideas that you're really excited about is the way to make some serious money," according to a podcast Blackstone released Friday. Wien has written a series of market commentaries on "The Smartest Men in Europe" over the past few years. This June, he eulogized his late mentor by noting that, after de Picciotto's death, there would be "no essay on The Smartest Man in Europe this year." In Friday's podcast, Wien also elaborated on investing lessons from de Picciotto he has been sharing with his own mentees (emphasis ours): "I don't think I originated this but I've been lucky enough to build up a significant personal net worth, and I've done it by taking risk. I'M A BIG BELIEVER IN TAKING RISK BY CONCENTRATING (that's the lesson I learned from Edgar), and by cutting my losses quickly and letting my winners run. So I have some stocks in my portfolio that I've literally made 100 times my money on and I've used those stocks to make charitable contributions. I've never sold them but took the capital gains to use them as kind of a charitable piggy bank. But that's been very satisfying for me. SO IT ISN'T AN ORIGINAL IDEA BUT TAKE RISK, CUT YOUR LOSSES QUICKLY AND LET YOUR WINNERS RUN — AND THAT'S THE WAY TO MAKE A SIZEABLE NET WORTH." That may sound counterintuitive, given how top hedge fund managers are still reeling from losses from big concentrated bets on companies like Valeant. Wien mentioned how a herd mentality is also present in technology stocks such as Netflix and Facebook, and he asked investors to heed de Picciotto's warning: Crowded trades are almost always dangerous. YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE PODCAST HERE. What is your idea of utopia? Share your pictures and thoughts

The term utopia was first coined by Sir Thomas More when he described a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. What does it mean 500 years on? Utopia. The-magical sounding term comes from the Greek οὐ (“not”) and τόπος (“place”) and is used to describe imagined communities or societies that appear to be perfect. It was first coined by Sir Thomas More from the Greek language in 1516, in a book that described a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. But what does it mean today? In celebration of 500 years since the launch of More’s book, and to coincide with Somerset House’s utopia fair (24-26 June), we want to get our readers to share their ideas on this topic.
