Turkish scholars in Istanbul discuss minorities past and present
Turkey’s stance towards minority groups was the topic of a high-level panel discussion at the İsmail Beşikçi Vakfı in İstanbul’s Beyoğlu district last week. Some of the country’s leading academics and representatives of minority groups participated in the talk, which was held to mark the anniversary of the 1955 attacks against Greek, Armenian and Jewish citizens in Turkey. Speakers criticised Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s for allegedly exploiting the “New Turkey” discourse in order to target the country’s non-Muslim minority. In August, Erdogan offended the Armenians. On nationwide television, Erdoğan said: “Let all Turks in Turkey say they are Turks and all Kurds say they are Kurds. What is wrong with that? You wouldn’t believe the things they have said about me. They have said I am Georgian. ...They have said even uglier things - they have called me - excuse me for saying this - Armenian, but I am Turkish.” This statement from the Turkish president, in which he apologised before using the word “Armenian” as though asking to be excused before uttering a swear word, drew the ire of not only Armenians but also other minority groups in Turkey. As regards the September 1955 attacks, one well-known Turkish journalist Rıdvan Akar, said the violence was a direct result of numerous Turkish government policies, including the Varlık Vergisi (Wealth Tax) that was used to transfer wealth from non-Muslims to Muslims. Other similar measures included the Vatandaş Türkçe Konuş (Citizen, Speak Turkish) campaigns that led to the 1964 deportation of thousands of ethnic Greeks without Turkish citizenship. According to human rights activists and members of Turkey’s Say Stop to Racism and Nationalism Association (Dur De), more than 400 non-Muslim women were raped, 15 people died, and more than 300 people were badly wounded during the attacks in September 1955. Also, thousands of homes, dozens of churches, one synagogue, one monastery and 26 schools were attacked.

Chinese Investors Look for Rare Earth Metals in Greece
The Greek subsoil and its rare earth metals have attracted the interest of Chinese investors. On the occasion of the ERES international conference hosted in Greece from September 4 to 7, a delegation from China, which is considered the absolute leader in the earth metals field, visited Greece. It is estimated that 17 valuable minerals associated to the high-tech industry are present in Greece. The majority lies in the underwater area of the northern Aegean Sea and in Thrace. Indications of rare minerals appear in the areas of Rhodope, Thessaloniki, Chios, Kilkis, and in the coastal and underwater area of Strymonikos Bay, and bauxites on the Greek mainland. These earth metals can be used as catalytic automobile converters, in petroleum refining, in TVs, mobile phones, portable DVDs, laptops, rechargeable batteries in hybrid and electric cars, wind turbine generators, medical devices, photovoltaic systems, missile defense satellites and many more. European geologists claim that Greece, along with Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, have rare earth metal and mineral reserves, and should be used to save Europe’s car and electronics industries from uncertain imports.

Church of Greece Revenues Drop
During the last five years, Church of Greece revenues have decreased by 70%. Βelievers offer fewer donations, while the number of sacraments performed in churches has dropped due to the financial crisis. At the same time, many properties belonging to the Church remain vacant. Vacant buildings amount to almost 60%, while the paying of dividends has stopped since 2008. According to estimates of the Holy Synod, one-fourth of the Church’s real estate properties have been vacant for a long time. The six-storey building at Mitropoleos Str in Athens is a typical example. The building used to house the Education Ministry, but in 2007, the Ministry moved and the building remains vacant since. Finally, after ten unsuccessful bids, Electra Hotels Group bought the building that will soon operate as a hotel. It is estimated that the revenues of the Central Ecclesiastical Financial Service dropped to 9.33 million euros in 2012 and 7.4 million euros in 2013, compared to 10 million euros in 2011. The ecclesiastical property includes 300 frozen properties, 570 properties, apartments, offices, 225,000 acres of forest land, 7,400 acres of grassland and 440 plots within the urban planning zone.
Armata Festival in Spetses
A number of spectacular events and celebrations were held again this year on the beautiful Greek island of Spetses, on the occasion of the Armata Festival, on September 8-14. Armata is an event of great importance not only for Spetses but for Greece in general. It is the celebration of the glorious Battle of Spetses that was fought on September 8, 1822. During the battle, Kosmas Barbatsis’ fire-ship attacked the Turkish flagship and managed to sink it in front of the Spetses port. The sinking of the Turkish ship was vital for the battle’s result as the Ottoman fleet was forced to retreat. Each year, the celebration’s centerpiece is a representation of the battle in the island’s central port. Real ships are used, and a model ship is built especially for the occasion, in order to be burnt in the sea among a massive firework display. The burning ship closes the festive week in a grand manner. The celebrations include many cultural events and activities, both for young and adult visitors. This year’s Armata included theatrical and dance performances, concerts of traditional and contemporary music, and exhibitions. The festival reached its highlight on Saturday, September 13, with the reenactment of the naval battle. After the flagship’s burning, spectacular fireworks lit up the night sky.

People in Greece expect bigger names in the ISL in future – NorthEast United keeper Alexandros Tzorvas
NorthEast United FC’s Tzorvas Lands in India
Indian Super League (ISL) franchise NorthEast United FC received one of their key international footballers, Alexandros Tzorvas, who landed there on Saturday. Tzorvas, a Greek, was the first choice goalkeeper of his country in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and during the Euro 2012. “The ISL is a big opportunity that is going to help me build a lot more experience. I love exploring new things and I am always ready for new challenges. The ISL is one such new challenge and it is one of the chapters of my football career that I am looking forward to,” he told the Greek press. “NorthEast United FC comes with a different motto, which is unity, and I believe in that completely. I am very excited to be on board with the North East United club,” he added. Being the first choice goalkeeper for his national side at the 2010 World Cup, Tzorvas explained why donning the national colours is different from playing for the club. “I was on the national team for more than six-to-seven years. In 2010 I played in Africa and 2012 (European Championship) in Poland. To play for your country is unbelievable, it is more than playing for a club, it gives you something bigger to represent. It’s a huge experience, and I hope to transfer it to younger teammates.”

Samaras: Greece Does not Need Additional Loans
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras rules out any discussion on the possibility of a third memorandum in an interview with “Real News” Sunday newspaper. Samaras stated that the country does not want additional loans and the Troika will leave after the end of the current bailout program. He also said that this is a result of debt restructuring, the plan’s effectiveness to re-enter the international markets, fiscal consolidation which will allow tax reliefs to start this year, as well as settlements between banks and debtors. The Prime Minister said “Greece does not need additional loans! And would not sign a ‘new memorandum’ for money it does not need. After the end of the program the Troika will leave, as it happened in Ireland and Portugal. What matters, is the program to end and Greece to return to normal.”

Greek opposition insists on 'necessity' for snap general election
Greek opposition Radical Left Coalition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Sunday reiterated call for immediately holding snap general elections.
Tsipras Calls for Elections and Presents Economic Plan
SYRIZA party leader Alexis Tsipras, speaking during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) on Saturday, referred to his party’s economic policy and called for general elections immediately. Tsipras attacked the coalition government and accused Antonis Samaras and Evangelos Venizelos of obeying the demands of the Troika of Greece’s international lenders and German chancellor Angela Merkel. Tsipras stated that SYRIZA would demand a major public debt write-off so that it becomes sustainable. He also pointed out the need for an international debt conference, similar to the one held in 1953 to deal with Germany’s debt. The SYRIZA leader presented a “National Reconstruction Plan” that would replace the current memorandum and would be based on four pillars: end of the humanitarian crisis, recovery of the Greek economy, revival of the employment market and reform of the political system. Regarding taxes, he said that SYRIZA would repeal the unjust ENFIA tax and raise the tax-free limit to 12,000 euros, increase minimum wage to 751 euros and restore pensions and public employee salaries. Tsipras also presented a plan for the formation of a two-year 5-billion-euro package, financed by the European Union, to boost job creation. He also claimed SYRIZA would put 20 billion euros, out of the current 68 billion, in tax arrears in a seven-year payment plan, bringing 3 billion euros to the Greek state in the first year. He finally called for early elections as he claimed that would be beneficial for Greek society. He pointed out that he is not calling for elections because he is in a hurry to govern but because he wants to form a strong government that will fight for the interests of Greeks.

Gov’t Aims to Have New Paros Airport Ready by 2015
The Greek government aims to open the new airport on the island of Paros in early 2015 even if temporary structures need to be used, Greece ‘s Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis said during a series of meetings with local officials on Friday. Construction of the new Paros airport began in 2012 at the Mangano locale. The airport is expected to be completed by January 2015 and in full service by April 2015. It will have a 1,400-metre-long runway, work on which the Minister inspected on Friday. In addition, plans are under way to extend the airport runway on Syros island, a project costing 5 million euros. “We will extend the existing runway by 140 metres [to a total of 1,200 metres]; in other words to the extent allowed by the licences, the possibilities and the technical aspects available,” the Minister said, adding that “a tender for the project will be called, and we will soon have both a construction winner and funding from the new EU support framework.” (source: ana-mpa)

Archaeologists Return to Zakynthos for Philip II of Spain Shipwreck
A 16th century shipwreck that had been located in the 80s two kilometers off the port of Zakynthos island, will be again in the focus of Culture Ministry archaeologists’ studies. The 20-meter-long vessel that shipwrecked near the port of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, most likely participated in the 1571 Naval Battle of Nafpaktos, one of the most important sea battles in world history. The shipwreck, the only one discovered in Greece that dates back to the era of Philip II of Spain, was found in the 1980s by local speargun fishermen and was studied in the 1990s by Greek archaeologists in cooperation with Oxford University scientists. The part of its hull that was pulled out of the sea, has been covered by geotextile to protect it from being eaten away by worms within the framework of an innovative method created by technological educational institutes (TEI) in Athens. However, the research was interrupted four years ago. Now, archaeologists will stay in Zakynthos for approximately a month, while participating divers in the research team will dive in the shipwreck area in order to find and bring to light the other part of the ship that is still under tons of mud.
