An Open Letter to the Prime Minister of Greece

The Hon. Antonis Samaras, Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic Honourable Prime Minister: As you may be aware, earlier today a member of your national parliament and recent founder of the Greek Christian-Democratic Party‎ used an extremely derogatory term (the Greek equivalent of the word "faggot") in a Twitter reference to the Prime Minister of Luxembourg. Apparently your fellow parliamentarian's tweet was nothing more than an expression of his profound disapproval of the ‎Luxemburgian Prime Minister's engagement to his same-sex partner. As a proud expatriate Greek, living in a society where bigotry is broadly condemned, I was disappointed but perhaps not entirely shocked by your colleague's remark. Having escaped the pervasive and often overt homophobia of Greece in search of a fairer society where I could also have the right to do what your Luxemburgian counterpart did, I am not surprised by ‎such offensive ‎expressions. I did, however, see this particular outburst as a unique opportunity for an enlightened leader to trigger a process of positive reflection and genuine dialogue among the citizens of my beautiful birth country. You see, Prime Minister, while a vocal minority of modern day Greeks may be already expressing their disdain and embarrassment over your colleague's offensive remark, a very large silent majority of your fellow citizens will go to bed tonight entirely unconcerned and unaffected by today's incident. Their reaction, if they even heard or read about your colleague's public slur, would range from complete apathy, because apparently the country has more serious issues to grapple with, to thinly disguised support for that bigoted MP's views. And that is precisely where a terrific leadership opportunity lies for you: If you were to express your disappointment and communicate your genuine remorse to your Luxemburgian counterpart on behalf of an entire nation, you would automatically trigger that important adult conversation among your citizens. You would help expose and challenge some of their thinly disguised prejudices; you would start a more intelligent dialogue about some of the less obvious causes of Greece's brain-drain and brand-drain; and you would ‎be using a small dose of national shame to begin a snowball of a debate on what it means to be a truly democratic nation, based on the ancient Greek definition of freedom. Bigotry is not easy to erase and it will certainly take a while to enrich an entire nation with the same fundamental values of equality and unconditional mutual respect, which define and guide some of the more advanced western democracies like the one I chose to make my home. But today's incident was a perfect example of an opportunity to at least start that process. The power of your elected office, combined with a strong dose of moral courage on your part, can ‎be harnessed to trigger a national dialogue. And once people start talking and reflecting, the layers of bigotry will gradually fall away. Good luck, Prime Minister. This could well be one of the simplest and most rewarding ‎leadership opportunities of your tenure. By shaming, exposing and ultimately reducing intolerance in modern Greek society, you would be honouring our proud ancient democratic heritage while also creating a ‎unique legacy for yourself. Respectfully, Andreas Souvaliotis Toronto, Canada

ECB's Coeure Says Action Needed For Euro Zone Recovery

ATHENS (Reuters) - Economic recovery in Europe requires action both on the demand and supply sides and persistence with structural reforms, European Central Bank Executive Board member Benoit Coeure said on Thursday."What we have been saying, what particularly the ECB President (Mario Draghi) has been saying last week in Jackson Hall is that the European economy is at a point where action is needed both on the demand and the supply side," Coeure told Greek Skai TV in an interview."Action on the supply side is very important. There will be no recovery if euro area countries do not move on towards structural reforms," he said.Coeure said the ECB was committed to maintaining a high level of liquidity in the European economy."The spur of the recovery, the fuel of the recovery will come from aggregate demand. The ECB is committed to play its part by maintaining its very accommodative monetary conditions for an extended period of time," he said.Coeure met Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, and top officials including central bank chief Yannis Stournaras during his visit in Athens, ahead of talks between the government and its foreign lenders in Paris next month, which will kick off the country's next bailout review.Greece's economy is on the cusp of recovery after six years of recession, expected to grow by 0.6 percent this year."Greece has turned the corner," Coeure said adding that a lot remains to be done on structural reforms.Asked about Greek banks' capital needs that may be revealed in the ECB's region-wide stress tests in October, Coeure gave no clues but said it was positive that banks had already successfully tapped capital markets."We don't know yet whether money will be needed and how much, and in any case the first line of defense will be accessing capital markets," he said. "There should be no worry about it, they have a proven ability to access capital markets."(Reporting by George Georgiopoulos and Renee Maltezou; Editing by Susan Fenton)Join the conversation about this story »

Champions League: Olympiacos Against Atletico, Juventus, Malmo

The journey of the Greek football team Olympiacos in this year’s Champions League starts with many hopes and dreams. The Greek team, which was qualified for the 16 of the organization, will have to face last year’s finalist Atletico Madrid, Italian champions Juventus and the Swedish Malmö, participating for the first time in the organization. Olympiacos’ coach Miguel González, commonly known as Míchel, stated “I like this group. I am familiar with Malmö, not so much at this point though. It has players who have played in the Spanish league. Atletico is the group favorite, based on its course so far, and I believe we will fight to qualify for the next round. It remains a good team, either if they perform a little better or a little worse, compared to last year. Of course, Juventus is strong as well but we will also have to see the schedule because they will only have one official match on their feet at the Champions League premiere. I hope our premiere will be at our home stadium.” The full draw for the 2014/15 Champions League group stage: Group A: Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Olympiacos, Malmo Group B: Real Madrid, Basel, Liverpool, Ludogorets Group C: Benfica, Zenit, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco
Group D: Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray, Anderlecht Group E: Bayern Munich, Manchester City, CSKA Moscow, Roma Group F: Barcelona, PSG, Ajax, Apoel
Group G: Chelsea, Schalke, Sporting Lisbon, Maribor
Group H: Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Athletic Bilbao, Bate Borisov

Reign in Spain? US tries to shake off player losses, repeat as world basketball champion

by  Associated Press Weakened US team aims for world basketball title by BRIAN MAHONEY, Associated Press - 28 August 2014 13:18-04:00 BILBAO, Spain (AP) — The bad news just kept coming, the only difference whether the culprit was injury or interest. Some stars couldn't play. Others wouldn't. Then the losses really started piling up for the U.S. national basketball team. Kevin Love pulled out while awaiting his recently completed trade to Cleveland. Paul George broke his right leg in a horrific collision that shook up teammates and perhaps the future of international basketball. Finally, Kevin Durant, the Americans' best player and the NBA's MVP, changed his mind about taking part in the FIBA Basketball World Cup. The U.S. team that remains is good enough to win but vulnerable enough to lose — perhaps to the Spain squad that was so close against much more powerful Americans in the last two Olympics and could get a third shot on its home court. "We still have a goal and that's to win gold, and we can't (say), 'Oh, Kevin dropped out, Paul got hurt, so this is going to be tough for us,'" U.S. center Anthony Davis said. "We hear everybody saying that. We're trying to prove that wrong." The former world basketball championship begins Saturday at four sites throughout Spain and the Canary Islands. The Americans start a fairly benign group here in Basque Country against Finland, with Spain facing the most powerful pool in Granada, joined by European champion France, Brazil and Serbia. Eight teams will advance to Barcelona and the other eight to Madrid for the knockout rounds. The gold-medal game is Sept. 14 in Madrid, the only time the U.S. and Spain could meet. The Americans held off the Spanish in Olympic thrillers in 2008 and 2012, fueled by LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony. It would now be up to a much younger U.S. squad — its youngest featuring professionals — led by Davis, Stephen Curry, Derrick Rose, James Harden and Kyrie Irving. And if they win, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said it would be even sweeter than the Olympic victories. "When you have expectations based on what you think you had, and you get dealt those blows and you recover and you're able to still get the job done, it's sweet," Colangelo said. "That's why I said what I did." Other contenders are also short-handed. Tony Parker is taking the summer off instead of playing for France, and Spurs teammate Manu Ginobili can't suit up for Argentina because of a lingering leg injury. Lithuania starting point guard Mantas Kalnietas was lost to a shoulder injury Tuesday in an exhibition game, weakening a potential semifinal opponent for the Americans. That could leave Spain as the team arriving in the best shape, a skilled and veteran unit featuring Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka up front and Jose Calderon, Ricky Rubio, Rudy Fernandez and Juan Carlos Navarro in the backcourt. The 2006 world champions went 8-0 in exhibition play. "It's a very special opportunity to try and achieve something big, which is nothing other than to be world champions again," Pau Gasol told FIBA.com recently. "It would be incredible to achieve this at home but in order to do that, we need to follow a lot of steps, compete at the highest level, give everything and enjoy every moment." The Americans were beaten by Greece in the semifinals of the '06 worlds but haven't lost since, running off 54 straight victories. They are the only team deep enough to withstand the kind of player losses they've faced and still be considered by many the team to beat. "They have a great team and I think they are the favorite in this world championship," Slovenia's Edo Muric said after the Americans' 101-71 exhibition victory in the Canary Islands on Tuesday. But they are young, with an average age of just 24.08 years, about a half-year younger than the 2010 championship team that featured holdovers Curry, Rose, and Rudy Gay. That might seem old in the future if NBA owners, in the wake of George's injury, push to re-examine the policy of allowing veteran players to compete internationally. For now, youth is another obstacle the Americans face as they try to repeat as world champions for the first time. "I feel old. I'm like the third-oldest guy on the team compared to back then," the 26-year-old Curry said. "We were all 21 and 22 year olds, couple of vets, so we're all at different parts of our career right now. More experienced, and having that experience in Turkey to rely on for myself, D-Rose ... and Rudy hopefully can lead this team where we want to go. "We definitely have high expectations for what we're trying to do." ___ Follow Brian Mahoney on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/Briancmahoney News Topics: Sports, 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, FIBA Basketball World Cup, International basketball, Men's sports, Men's basketball, Athlete injuries, NBA basketball, Basketball, Events, Athlete health, Professional basketball People, Places and Companies: Anthony Davis, Granada, LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Jerry Colangelo, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Jose Calderon, Ricky Rubio, Rudy Fernandez, Juan Carlos Navarro, Juan Carlos, Rudy Gay, Spain, Bilbao, Madrid, United States, Western Europe, Europe, North America Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. According to lefkadapress.gr, “Katara”, one of the two yachts of the 62 year-old Emir, is one of the world’s largest yachts. Al-Thani spends most of his vacation in Greece since he is the owner of Oxia island and he has many times visited the Ionian islands. The luxury yacht of the Emir of Qatar is 124 meters long and 19 meters wide. It has seven decks, two helidecks, a swimming pool, jacuzzi and a submarine that can dive to a depth of 100 meters. According to Forbes magazine, the Emir of Qatar is placed seventh in the list with the richer members of royal families in the world. His personal fortune exceeds two billion U.S. dollars while he has made significant investments in every corner of the planet. He seized power with a coup d’etat in 1995, dethroning his father. He is considered one of the most liberal Arab leaders and has assigned to the second of his three wives responsibilities concerning educational and children’s rights issues. 7 Ingenious Weapons Throughout History That Should Never Have Worked

Human ingenuity has a way of triumphing over basic logic, and weapons design is one area where impractical ideas and designs have actually worked out. A recent Quora thread posed the question of "what are some of the most ingenious weapons throughout history?" The answers span a wide spectrum of inventiveness, while providing insights into some of the truly remarkable — seemingly batty — ways humans have waged war.  We've highlighted some of the more ridiculous examples of human ingenuity below.  1. The Claw of Archimedes  The Claw of Archimedes was a defensive weapon built by the legendary mathematician to defend the city of Syracuse, in modern-day Sicily, against a naval assault. There is debate as to exactly how the claw functioned, but it was thought to be a sort of crane equipped with a grappling hook that could partially lift attacking ships out of the water.  The claw would then drop the ships, causing them to capsize. The claw saw action during the Second Punic War, and successfully defended the city against a Roman attack.  2. Snake Bombs  In 190 BC, the Carthaginian general Hannibal won a massive surprise victory against King Eumenes II of Pergamon. Although vastly outnumbered, Hannibal had an ingenious strategy. Short on other weapons, Hannibal filled clay pots full of venomous snakes.  During the proceeding naval battle, Hannibal's forces fired hundreds of clay pots filled of the snakes against Pergamon's navy. Between the snakes and Hannibal's fighters, his army scored a resounding victory.  3. The Bouncing Bomb The bouncing bomb was a munition designed to bounce across the surface of the water before sinking and exploding in a manner similar to a depth charge. The bomb was invented to hit targets that could not be reached by normal bombing or by torpedoes, like the foundations of dams that had been protected with torpedo nets.  The bombs were used by the British during World War Two to target German dams. 4. The Spear-Thrower   Spear-throwers are one of history's earliest instances of truly ingenious weapon design. The tool is remarkably simple, consisting of nothing more than a shaft and a spur that supports a projectile. A fighter holds the spear-thrower, and carries out a throw.  The projectile is then launched from the lever with greater velocity, since the spear-thrower and the throwing arm function together as a lever, providing greater range and penetrating ability. The spear-thrower was invented by multiple groups throughout the world.  5. The Turtle Ship Turtle ships were a type of naval vessel used by the Korean navy between the 15th and 19th centuries. The ships had closed tops of spiked iron that deflected arrow fire and discouraged enemies from boarding the ship. Each ship was also equipped with at least five cannons, and portholes for arrows or muskets.  The most recognizeable part of the ship was a dragon-shaped head on the bow, which was used to launch cannon fire or flames at enemy ships.  6. Greek Fire  Greek fire was a sort of proto-napalm used by the Byzantines between the 7th and 10th centuries. It was a closely guarded state secret of the Byzantines, and the exact formula for the weapon has been lost.  The Byzantines sprayed fire from nozzles attached to their ships, giving the empire an unparalleled advantage in naval combat. The fire was particularly effective, and would even float across the top of the water while remaining alight.  7. Tachanka  The Tachanka was a cart or wagon which had been outfitted with a heavy machine gun in the back and reached peak use World War I and the proceeding Russian Civil War.  The cart was pulled by two to four horses, making it one of the first automated and highly mobile pieces of artillery. Since the machine gun faced backwards, the weapon was also used during raids and retreats to lay down cover fire on pursuing enemies. SEE ALSO: 7 unbelievable military weapons most people have never heard of Join the conversation about this story »

Final Coordination of Greek Government Before Troika Meeting

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his coalition partner, PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, met Wednesday with Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis and other key cabinet members to finalize Greece’s strategy for the crucial meeting with Troika officials in Paris next week. Government officials examined Greece’s progress in implementing reforms so far, as well as loose ends – mainly relating to the second phase of pension reforms and a plan to deal with the large number of “red” loans held by Greek banks. Samaras asked for full coordination ahead of the Troika meeting in Paris on September 2, in order to attain the best possible outcome for the country, during a preparatory consultation with various ministers on Wednesday evening at the government headquarters. The Prime Minister used the example of Wednesday’s Greek bond rally to emphasize the improvement of Greek economy’s course, as well as the improved attitude of international markets towards Greece. Today, preparations for next week’s talks in Paris are to continue at a ministerial level. Hardouvelis will meet with all ministers participating in the Paris meeting with the Troika, so as to coordinate their efforts towards satisfying the remaining commitments. Approximately 80% of the commitments the government has agreed to with the Troika have already been materialized. Venizelos said that the Greek program’s new evaluation, taking place during autumn, must signal the change of the country’s attitude and its final exit from the crisis. “This must be understood by everyone, inside and outside of Greece,” noted Venizelos. Venizelos, for his part, is said to have pressed Labor and Social Insurance Minister Yiannis Vroutsis to strenuously resist possible demands by Troika representatives for further increases of retirement ages and interventions affecting labor rights of Greek workers.

Loverdos Says No University Staff Layoffs

Education Minister Andreas Loverdos seems ready to go against government policy as he refuses to lay off any university administrative staff. Loverdos said that an evaluation report of staff requirements in tertiary education showed that universities have less administrative staff than they need. The Minister, who asked for the report to be carried out, said this means that none of the 1,050 employees who were placed in a public sector mobility scheme last fall should be dismissed. “The results of the evaluation report were only made available to me today,” he noted. “I had said from the start that there needs to be an evaluation and that its results should determine whether there should be any layoffs. There can be no other rule. Since the evaluation shows that there is no need for layoffs, noone will be laid off.” The private evaluation report indicated that Greece’s eight state universities need 4,086 administrative employees against the 3,630 who are currently employed. It also showed that the ratio of administrative staff to students in Greece is much lower than the European Union average. Earlier this summer, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Government Vice-President Evangelos Venizelos had decided to immediately proceed with a call of tender and hiring of 600 university administrative employees. Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Loverdos had disagreed over how many university administrative employees should be rehired after being placed in a labor reserve last year, with the remainder being dismissed. Loverdos supported that the government should rehire as many as 880 of the staff but Mitsotakis insisted that no more than 500 could be taken back. Venizelos did not side with Loverdos’ comments earlier in the day that there will be no administrative staff layoffs in universities and clarified that the evaluation report must be studied closely before rushing to decisions.

Telegraph: Greece is Ideal for Fall Vacation

British newspaper “The Telegraph” described Greece as one of the ultimate fall vacation destinations, stressing that in several islands of the Cyclades, Crete and Rhodes, tourists can enjoy the sun, warm seas and beauty of the landscape at very affordable prices. Telegraph travel writer Nick Trend stated that if someone thinks he has lost the opportunity to enjoy a little sun in Greece, “it certainly isn’t too late.” Even though the weather cannot always be predictable, there are several places in the south of Europe where people can go on vacation even in late September. Among places like Sardinia and Majorca, Trend also mentioned several Greek islands of the Cyclades, Crete and Rhodes as destinations that tourists should seriously consider for their fall vacation. Early September The Cyclades islands offer a wide variety of locations, “from the hedonistic clubbing and restaurant scene of Mykonos to spectacular views of Santorini, and quieter Naxos and Paros.” Late September For the last days of September, Telegraph suggests Crete as the ultimate destination because, being one of the most southern islands in the Mediterranean, it has excellent weather even in early October, while there are many vacancies in hotels and rooms are quite large and reasonably priced. In early October, people who refuse to believe that winter is approaching can also visit Rhodes because it is still warm and hotels offer great deals while visitors will have the chance to enjoy the island’s beauty without having to fight the tourist crowds who take up every nook and cranny during summer months.

Increased Visitors in Most Popular Greek Monuments

Greek Culture Ministry released data showing a significant increase in visitors to some of Greece’s 38 most important archaeological sites and museums during the second quarter of this year, which is mainly attributed to the extension of opening hours. Figures showed that the number of visitors increased by 27% between April and June, compared to the same period last year, while revenue increased by 21%. It appears that the most popular site is Hadrian’s Library in Athens, which recorded a 151% increase in visitor numbers. The newly renovated Archaeological Museum of Heraklion in Crete also drew large crowds, with an 103% increase. The extension of the opening hours in the 38 Greek archaeological sites (from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) will apply until October. Tourism is Greece’s most profitable industry that has remained intact by the financial crisis and can help the Greek economy recover. The tourist arrivals in 2014 have reached a record high. It is estimated that the gradual restoration of the country’s image to foreign markets resulted in strengthening the image of the Greek tourism industry.
