SYRIZA Leader Reckons End is Nearing for Samaras’ Coalition Govt

In a public speech on Saturday at Heraklion, Crete, main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras called Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras a “Premier of chaos,” underlining that “the countdown for the coalition government and the destruction policies has already begun,” in reference to the imminent successive votes in the Greek Parliament for the election of a new President of the Hellenic Republic that could lead to general elections. For Tsipras, “the time for the great Democratic party of the Left [meaning SYRIZA] has come.” He appeared hopeful that “a new page is turning for the homeland.” In a more aggressive tone, he noted that “the cores of domestic interlacing interests and international usury [sic.] are terrorizing and barking, but in vain, as their political time is over.” The SYRIZA leader described the hastening of the procedure for the election of a new President as a “convulsion before the end” for the coalition government. Moreover, he talked about “Samaras exit,” in response to being accused of dragging Greece to a potential “Grexit.” According to Tsipras, SYRIZA’s platform for a way out of the crisis “costs 12 billion euros and we have located its financing sources.” He warned that Greeks are “tough” and that they “cannot be blackmailed or terrorized easily. Instead, they become stubborn.” Government spokeswoman Sofia Voultepsi was quick to respond to Tsipras on Saturday that “the only architect of chaos in this country is Mr Tsipras and the only convulsion that exists is the one he, himself, promises: The convulsion before the end of ‘European Greece’.” Voultepsi made a reference to the rise of Greek bond spreads, the tumbling of stock prices in the Athens Exchange and warnings issued by credit rating agencies regarding the political developments in Greece [SYRIZA is leading the polls]. Commenting on the “toughness” Tsipras talked about, she said it was “unbelievable statements” made by him and his party’s “components” that practically provoke the markets to attack Greece. She concluded that “the only pursuit of Mr Tsipras is to lead the country to insolvency.”

Greece Spends More on Pensions Than Most Countries

Greece comes second on pension spending, according to an Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report. Greek pensioners, however, may have to wait up to three years until they get the first full pension check. The countries spending the highest proportion of their public money on pensions are Italy (31.9%), Greece (28%) and Portugal (26.4%). This is a result of these nations’ ageing population and the economic downfall they have suffered since the economic crisis, which has caused other state spending to decrease. The country that spends the least on pensions is Iceland. In 2011, only 4.5% of Iceland’s public spending went to pensioners. Greek pensioners may have to wait up to three years in order to receive the first full pension check and some have to wait months to get the temporary pension. There are tens of thousands of pensioners “waiting in line” at the Social Security Fund (IKA) and the Unified Supplementary Insurance Fund (ETEA). At the moment, there are 163,000 cases pending for almost 90,000 pensioners. According to IKA data, there will be 50,000 more pensioners added on the “waiting list” in 2015. IKA temporary pensions take two to three months to process, even though legislation states that pensioners should get 80% of their pension within 45 days, if they only have one insurance fund, and up to 75 days if they have more than one. Engineers, doctors, lawyers and other professions that have their own insurance funds, receive temporary pension in three to four months. The Self-Employed Insurance Organization (OAEE) has a two-year wait before the insured get the full pension. If they have supplementary insurance, the delay may be up to three years.

SYRIZA and DIMAR Leaders’ Meeting Sparks Collaboration Rumors

The meeting between SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras and Democratic Left (DIMAR) head Fotis Kouvelis sparked rumors that the two Greek opposition parties will collaborate in the snap general elections. According to a report in Greek newspaper “Efimerida ton Syntakton,” talks on cooperation between the two parties are at an advanced stage and the two leaders work on speeding up procedures. The two men believe that the Presidential elections will fail to elect a new President of the Hellenic Republic and that snap elections are almost certain for late January-early February, 2015. DIMAR has 10 MPs who have openly expressed their decision to vote against Stavros Dimas for Greek President. After the end of the three ballots, it is possible that the party will announce the collaboration with SYRIZA and go to the general elections on the same ballot. However, analysts say that nothing is confirmed yet because the two parties are considering the 50-parliament-seat bonus the first party receives. According to the newspaper report, Kouvelis will be on the SYRIZA national ballot and after the general elections, SYRIZA, as the first party, will nominate him for President of the Hellenic Republic. Meanwhile, DIMAR spokesman Christos Machairas said that there is no communication or plan between the two parties. He refuted the newspaper report by saying, “This is a science fiction script. The Democratic Left does things in the open, not under the table. The Democratic Left has decided that Greece needs a new government… Our strategy in the elections will be decided when the time comes,” and added that the party will go the elections as an autonomous unit.

Greek PM Samaras Calls all MPs to Vote in Favor of a New President

In an article with Greek newspaper “Real News,” Prime Minister Antonis Samaras sent a message to all MPs to set aside the “clouds of political uncertainty and instability” by voting in favor of a new President of the Hellenic Republic during the imminent three consecutive ballots scheduled to take place in Parliament by the end of the month. Failure to elect a new President would, according to the Greek Constitution, automatically lead to general elections for the formation of a new Parliament that would then vote three more times for a new President. Samaras blamed main opposition SYRIZA that its stance and rhetoric is causing fear in the markets. “There is uneasiness and it’s justified, SYRIZA is causing it,” wrote Samaras, who added that “Democracy has the weapons to neutralize this climate of fear.” The Greek PM sees the country exiting the crisis and ready to forge an agreement with its creditors regarding the day after the bailout program ends. In his view, SYRIZA pursues to block this course. “The only thing left to do is to […] elect a President of the Republic. It is a national duty and a genuine redemption,” Samaras concluded. Nicosia Against Turkish Foreign Minister Visiting ‘North and South’

Cyprus has made it clear that it cannot discuss any proposal made by the Turkish side for meetings of the Turkish and Greek Foreign Ministers in “the north and the south” of the island. Cyprus News Agency (CNA) requested the government’s reaction to the latest statement made by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Greece, during a meeting with Evangelos Venizelos, for a joint meeting proposal with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades that includes meetings with the illegal authorities in the northern Turkish-occupied part of the island. The CNA correspondent in Ankara has learned that this proposal was made in the context of an earlier statement by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to visit “the north and the south” of the island along with his Greek counterpart. Sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry have clarified that Cavusoglu’s proposal includes meetings of the Ministers of Greece and Turkey “to both the south and the north” of the island, upon President Nicos Anastasiades‘ return to Cyprus, as he is currently recovering from a recent heart operation in New York. “We do not take part in such meetings, Greece is not willing to participate in such meetings, these statements and moves are devious and we cannot accept them,” the government spokesman told CNA. He confirmed that Cavusoglu has called the Cypriot President earlier in the day to wish him a speedy recovery and send wishes on behalf of the Turkish President and the Turkish Prime Minister. “He told the President that he has discussed with his Greek counterpart about coming to the island but did not mention anything about meetings,” the spokesman pointed out. Turkey, whose troops occupy one third of Cyprus since they invaded the island in 1974, does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004. Numerous rounds of UN-backed talks to reunite the island under a federal roof have failed to yield results. (source: CNA)

Greek Police on Alert for New Terrorist Attack

The Greek counter-terrorism unit suspect that the attack at the Israeli embassy on Friday was the prelude of another, larger terrorist strike. After ballistic tests determined that the two AK-47 rifles that fired at the Israeli embassy were the same guns that shot at the German ambassador’s home in Athens on December 30, 2013, the counter-terrorism unit believe that the Group of Popular Rebels who were responsible for that attack, will strike again. According to Greek media, a counter-terrorism unit officer said, “After the Group of Popular Rebels’ attack against the Israeli embassy, there is the possibility of another, stronger strike. This is why we are enhancing security on possible targets.” Authorities also consider the possibility of a collaboration between the Group of Popular Rebels and Revolutionary Struggle, Nikos Maziotis’ urban guerilla group. Also, they believe that terrorist fugitive Christodoulos Xeros, a bomb expert, may participate in a possible attack. Along with enhanced security, police motorcycle squad DIAS have boosted patrols in downtown Athens where the most possible targets are situated. Counter-terrorism unit officials consider that among potential targets are persons involved in the Troika negotiations or have high positions in financial institutions. Regarding the recent attack, Israeli intelligence members have allegedly arrived in Athens to aid in the investigations. “No one can disrupt the relations between Greece and Israel,” said Public Order Minister Vasilis Kikilias, who visited the scene of the shooting on Friday.

After Amphipolis, New Ancient Burial Ground Found in Platamonas

Excavations in Platamonas, Pieria, northern Greece, have unearthed an ancient settlement and burial ground that belongs in the late Bronze Age, around 1500 B.C. The discovery was made in parallel to the construction of the new national highway and was officially announced by archaeologist Sofia Koulidou, head of Pieria’s Ephorate of Antiquities. Archaeologists found 19 graves, some of them containing several objects such as Mycenaean style clay pots, bronze hoops, bone beads, bronze knives, clay flywheels, engraved stones and others. Some of the graves were very small and probably belong to children. The remains of two arched buildings were also discovered, as suggested by the surrounding walls and the holes where the support beams used to be. The buildings were next to each other and it appears that there was a settlement next to the burial ground. The discovery of various household objects reinforces the archaeologists’ assumption. Archaeologists say that this type of rectangular, oblong, arched building belongs to the middle Bronze Age, early 2000 B.C., and are rare in the particular area. The Mycaenean style objects suggest that the settlement was part of the Thessaly-Euobea cultural circle. Overall, the architectural style and discoveries provide valuable information on everyday life, death rituals and practices in the late Bronze Age. The first arch, along with the outbuilding, will be transferred to be highlighted in the Livithra Archaeological Park on east Mount Olympus. Other excavation discoveries in parallel to the national highway construction will be also displayed.

SYRIZA Leader Meets With Activists Opposing Former Athens Airport Sale

Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras met on Friday with activists campaigning for the conversion of the former Athens airport site at Elliniko, Greece , into a metropolitan park and expressed the party’s support “for the struggle of Elliniko residents to avert the sell-off of the former airport and beach.” A SYRIZA announcement said that Tsipras had repeated a promise made by the party to re-examine all contracts drawn up by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) selling public property to private owners, both in terms of their legality and in terms of protecting the public interest, in the new Parliament to be formed after the next elections. Responding to the announcement, government spokeswoman Sofia Voultepsi underlined that all HRADF decisions are legal, they are Greek government decisions and contracts with the Greek state. “Mr. Tsipras is insisting on the catastrophic scenario of the state’s…non-continuity while continuing to make statements about a supposed ‘re-examination’ of all HRADF contracts,” she said.
