Here's the real linguistic meaning behind 13 'Harry Potter' spells

[Harry Potter magic wand]Warner Bros. Pictures THE INSIDER SUMMARY: * J.K. ROWLING USED LATIN AS INSPIRATION FOR THE SPELLS IN "HARRY POTTER." * SOME TRANSLATIONS ARE VERY LITERAL — "AVIS" MEANS "BIRD." * OTHERS ARE COMPLEX — "SECTUMSEMPRA" MEANS "CONSTANT CUT." ------------------------- J.K. Rowling's wizarding world in the "Harry Potter" books is not so different from our own. Actual magic aside, there are many real-world inspirations behind her fictional creations. The spell incantations used are an excellent example. In many cases, Rowling reworked the classical Latin language and created new words. Her studies of Classical language and mythology at the University of Exeter clearly came into play. Using the textbook "The Greek and Latin Roots of English" by Tamara M. Green, we've broken down 13 spells to give you newfound appreciation for the inventiveness found in "Harry Potter." "ACCIO" — SUMMONING CHARM In Latin, the verb "accerso" means "to summon or fetch." Rowling modified the spelling and pronunciation to create the incantation for the summoning spell. "CONFUNDO" — USED TO CONFUSE OPPONENTS Here's an easy one. Confundo is the exact first-person conjugation of the Latin verb "confundere." The prefix _con-_ means "with or together" and the suffix _-fundo _means "to pour." When put together, the word literally means something like "mix," but is now figuratively used to be "jumble or confuse." [hermione granger memory charm]Warner Bros. "CRUCIO" — CAUSES OPPONENT UNBEARABLE PAIN The Latin word for "cross" is "crux," and the verb "cruciare" means "to crucify/torture." Crucio means "I torture," which is literally what the spell does in "Harry Potter." Crucio is one of the Unforgiveable Curses — meaning its use is punishable by death.  "IMPERIO" — GIVES THE USER CONTROL OVER ANOTHER WIZARD Another one of the Unforgiveable Curses, (one of the most sinister spells in the wizarding world), this one is used to make a witch or wizard do your bidding. The Latin word for "power" is "imperium," and "impero" means "I order." Rowling likely chose to create a hybrid of these two phrases.  [voldemort harry potter]Warner Brothers "DIFFINDO" — SEVERING CHARM The rather dramatic translation of diffindo is "I cleave asunder," but we can keep it simple and say it means "to split in two." Harry uses this spell in the book to split Cedric Diggory's book bag open when he needs to speak with him alone. "LUMOS" — IGNITES THE TIP OF YOUR WAND Perhaps the most common practical spell in the books, Lumos comes from the Latin word "lumen," meaning "light." Rowling also named her charity for orphaned children after the same word.  "NOX" — THE ANTI-CHARM FOR LUMOS, REMOVING THE LIGHT FROM YOUR WAND Nox is the Latin word for "night" — making the spell rather self-explanatory. An incantation for "night" will take away the light from your wand. [Harry Potter wand]Warner Bros. "EXPELLIARMUS" — DISARMS YOUR OPPONENT This spell is a two-parter. The first section comes from the Latin word "expellere," which means "to drive or force out." And then "arma" translates to "weapon" in Latin. Put them together, and the incantation means "to force out a weapon." "SECTUMSEMPRA" — CURSE WHICH REPLICATES SLASHING OPPONENT WITH A SWORD Here's another combination phrase. The first part — "sectum" — translates to "cut." And "sempra" (which you may recognize from the version of the word used in the Marine Corps. motto "Semper Fidelis") means "always or constant." The spell's effect is an series of open cuts, and only the counter-curse can seal them shut. "AVIS" — CHARM THAT CREATES A FLOCK OF BIRDS This one is quite literal. "Avis" simply means "bird" in Latin. Hermione used this charm in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" when she was angry at Ron, and set a flock of birds pecking at him. [Harry Potter Hermione Ron]Warner Bros. "WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA" — THE LEVITATING CHARM This is another mashup of multiple influences. "Wing" (while not Latin) clearly invokes imagery of flight, and the charm causes objects to fly. The "ard" section of "wingardium" is likely from the Latin "arduus," or "steep/elevated." And finally "levi" means "to lift."  "HOMENUM REVELIO" — SPELL THAT TELLS YOU IF HUMANS ARE PRESENT The Latin word "hominis" means "man," and "revelare" is the verb "to reveal." The spell will literally "reveal humans" if they are hiding nearby.   "PRIORI INCANTATEM" — THE REVERSE SPELL EFFECT. "A priori" is a Latin phrase which means "from the earlier." This spell will cause the user's wand to regurgitate ghosts of its previously cast spells. "Incantatem" is derived from the Latin "incantare" meaning "sing or recite" — often used in relation to magic or witchcraft. Workers in southern Europe are stuck in lousy jobs

EMA ZELIKOVITCH, a 24-year-old philosophy graduate in Madrid, takes a deep breath before listing the jobs she has held over the past few years. While at university she worked as a dance teacher, waitress, street fund-raiser for NGOs, call-centre operator and greeter at political conferences for Podemos, a far-left party. Since graduating she has juggled jobs at two restaurants, but one recently sacked her. Every job was on a temporary, or “fixed-term”, contract. And while some paid her a living wage, none came with a path to promotion. Dead-end, fixed-term jobs have haunted southern Europe for decades. In 2015 over half of employed 15-to-29 year olds in Spain were on temporary contracts, compared to two-fifths in Italy and just under a quarter in Greece; the average across the European Union is 14% (see chart 1). More flexible northern countries tend to protect the worker rather than the job, allowing their economies to adjust more quickly to...

Emirates slams United for having passenger dragged off a plane (UAL)

[Emirates Airbus A380]AP On Thursday, Emirates Airline president Sir Tim Clark weighed in on the incident involving the violent removal of a passenger from a United flight. And the veteran airline executive did not hold back. "Let me say it was a disgrace. It shamed the airline industry as a whole," Clark said to CNNMoney emerging markets editor John Defterios. "We don't go about our business in that way. It's symptomatic of a corporate culture within that company from the board and chief executive downwards." Clark then went on to add that had a similar incident taken place at Emirates, he would have reacted by immediately rooting out the cause of the problem before promptly resigning from his post.  This is just the latest episode in the grudge match between the two industry heavyweights.  Earlier this year, Munoz told Business Insider that Emirates and its fellow Middle Eastern airlines are mere "branding mechanisms" for respective governments and a threat to US jobs. In March, United, its employees, and members of Congress held a rally at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to protest Emirates' new flight from Newark to Athens, Greece. [Emirates Airlines CEO Sir Tim Clarke]REUTERS/Ahmed JadallahIn an interview with Business Insider last month, Clark fired back, calling the accusations "infantile." Shortly after the disturbing video of United Flight 3411 surfaced, Emirates released an attack ad complete with a laundry list of awards it has won for exemplary customer service. Since 2015, American, Delta, and United (the US3) have been complaining about competition from three huge and fast-growing Middle East-based rivals — Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways (the ME3). According to the US3, the ME3's growth has been fueled by as much as $50 billion in subsidies over the past decade, allowing them to flood the international market and threaten the job security of US aviation workers. They also say the ME3 are in violation of the Open Skies agreements that govern air travel between the US and 120 nations including the UAE and Qatar. [Oscar Munoz United CEO]APThe ME3 have repeatedly denied these allegations. Emirates says it has reported 28 years of profitability and returned more than $3 billion in dividends to its investors. In 2015, Emirates released a report that accused the US airlines of having received more than $100 billion in support from the US government since 2002 in the form of government assumption of pension responsibilities, bankruptcy protection, antitrust immunity, direct grants, loan guarantees, and tax exemptions. NOW WATCH: Here's what airlines legally owe you if you're bumped off a flight
