The rivals leaders of Cyprus have begun a third day of talks aimed at reunifying the island split along ethnic Greek and Turkish lines. The talks will take on an international dimension on Thursday with the arrival of leaders from Britain, Greece and Turkey. (AP Photo/Petros Karadjias)]GENEVA (AP) — The rival leaders of ethnically divided Cyprus exchanged maps Wednesday outlining the zones the island's Greek and Turkish communities would control in a hoped-for federation, the first time such a swap has occurred after decades of reunification talks.

A week in New York City on a $50,000 salary

[desk_lunch]Ruth Hartnup/Flickr _Welcome to Money Diaries, __where we're tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We're asking millennial women how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we're tracking every last dollar. (Thanks, __New York_ _mag__, for the inspiration.)_ _Today, a woman hosting a dinner party while training for a half-marathon._ INDUSTRY: Performing arts/media AGE: 30 LOCATION: NYC SALARY: $50,000 PAYCHECK AMOUNT (EVERY TWO WEEKS): $1,219 after tax, insurance, FSA, 401(k) and transit check; my husband reimburses me $450 per month to cover his portion of insurance and our phone bill # OF ROOMMATES: 1 (dude mentioned above) MONTHLY EXPENSES RENT: $2,533.08, split evenly. I pay $1,266.54 INTERNET: $88 (my husband covers utilities, which is comparable) PHONE BILL: $200, but my husband reimburses me for half ROCK CLIMBING GYM MEMBERSHIP: $85 NETFLIX: $7.99 HULU PLUS: $7.99 NEW YORK TIMES WEEKENDER SUBSCRIPTION: $6 (special discount rate) STANDING DONATION TO KARAM FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT A SYRIAN REFUGEE FAMILY: $50 YEARLY EXPENSES TAXES (ACCOUNTANT FEE): $162.50 for my half. My husband and I coordinate our checks for federal taxes and our accountant. We’ll get a refund from New York State that makes up for these two fees, and then some. My accountant has told me in the past that it’s better to owe than be owed when it comes to taxes, because you still get a little more money this way — but whenever he starts to go into the intricacies of withholdings on paychecks, he starts to sound like one of the teachers in Charlie Brown. I paid $467.50 extra in taxes this year. DAY ONE Meng He/Flickr 8 a.m. — I have the same breakfast every morning: Half a cup of vanilla Greek yogurt, half a cup of pumpkin puree, one tablespoon of chia seeds. 9:15 a.m. — I'm out of coffee at home, so I stop at Le Pain Quotidien for one. I contemplate also getting a roll, because Le Pain Quotidien is basically Amsterdam’s red-light district for bread, but I essentially have exactly enough for my coffee in quarters and I hate to use my card for such a small amount. The barista is excited, as she needed quarters. $2.75 11 a.m. — Still want bread. I try to sate this craving with a Pink Lady apple and some almond butter from home. Desired effect is not achieved. 12:05 p.m. — I convince enough of my coworkers to rally around having bread with lunch, so our office manager approves the purchase of a $3 baguette from LPQ from our treats fund. I wish I had this same determination when it came to understanding my taxes. 12:30 p.m. — Lunch from home: An arugula salad with celery and broiled eye-round steak. I’m not a dressing fan, but the steak juice gives it the extra something it needs. Oh, and bread. Beautiful, free bread. 2:20 p.m. — Check my Wells Fargo and see that my Hulu and Netflix payments both went through today. It seems ridiculous to have both, but I love that Hulu has most all of the Criterion collection and I try to watch at least one new Criterion film each week. My automatic transfer of $83 from checking to savings also goes through. 4 p.m. — I bring most of my food from home, because lunch options in midtown are ridiculously expensive. I have a Pink Lady apple with almond butter, which I pack into a Ziploc bag and squeeze, pastry-bag style, onto the apple slices, because I’m classy. Also because I lost my little bento box thing that held small items like almond butter. 8:30 p.m. — Working late. I have a Tarocco blood orange on my way home. 8:45 p.m. — Improvising with what we have in the pantry, I make a frittata with eggs, plain Greek yogurt, some leftover Israeli couscous, onion, and Parm. It does the job and I eat it with my husband while watching The Americans. 9:50 p.m. — Check out on my latest Stitch Fix box; I keep a pair of culottes and a sailor-stripe shirt. $83. DAILY TOTAL: $85.75 DAY 2 Didriks/Flickr 7:05 a.m. — FreshDirect arrives. I buy for the week and do a lot of meal prep, but I got a little extra today, as I’m hosting a dinner party and making a seafood and radicchio risotto for eight people. $85.83 9:15 a.m. — Make the same Greek yogurt/pumpkin/chia breakfast with coffee at home. I get the La Colombe beans from FreshDirect and one bag usually lasts two weeks, as I’m the only one in the house who drinks coffee. 10:05 a.m. — My husband and I start to make our way down to the Brooklyn Ikea. He stops at the bodega near our apartment to get an iced tea and gets me a kombucha to make the card minimum. 11:50 a.m. — Go to Ikea for five of the $7.99 folding chairs to accommodate the headcount at tonight’s dinner, along with some drinking glasses, AA batteries, and paper napkins to use as guest hand towels in the bathroom. While we’re there, I break down and buy three succulents, plus pots. It’s a crowded Saturday morning and I’m un-showered and scoping out cacti alongside a crowd of Brooklyn hipsters, so basically it’s Coachella on a budget. $70.61 1:10 p.m. — Graze on the rest of last night’s frittata for lunch and have a spoonful of almond butter out of the jar. 4:15 p.m. — Run to Food Cellar near my apartment to get a baguette and some taper candles. $11.16 7 p.m. — I recently started hosting a table as part of The Dinner Party, which is a group of mainly twenty- and thirtysomethings who have experienced significant loss. TDP organizes tables of roughly eight to 10 people to have regular potluck dinners and connect over the shared bond and discuss life after loss. It’s an amazing group of people. In addition to the risotto I make, we have wine, beer, roasted broccolini, zucchini, salad, and a gluten-free chocolate cake with coconut cream. And bread. DAILY TOTAL: $167.60 DAY 3 10:30 a.m. — Standard breakfast and pack my coffee in a to-go mug to go out for the morning. 12:30 p.m. — Meet a friend at Peacefood Café on the Upper West Side for lunch. I get the Japanese pumpkin sandwich and a gingerade. $12.96 1:45 p.m. — Walk back to the N train from the Upper West Side. On my way, I stop in at Kiehl’s to restock on face wash. It’s expensive, but worth it. $31.57 1:55 p.m. — Also stop at CVS for dental floss and eyeliner. $12.50 2:20 p.m. — Swing back by Food Cellar on my way home to get some apples for the week and a few bags of Beanitos bean chips (my nutritionist got me hooked on them). My husband meets me there and I get his sandwich and a cool elderflower seltzer. We’ve been married for five years and have yet to combine our bank accounts, which is mostly on me. He’s even better with finances than I am, but I watched my mother support two deadbeat ex-husbands, so I still have some personal stuff to work through. In the meantime, we basically even out on the little things and consciously split the big things. It works out. $24.20 3 p.m. — Snack on an apple and almond butter while batch cooking steak for the week. It sounds very boring, but I’ve been working with a nutritionist since last September and it’s gotten me into a routine for breakfast and, during the workweek, lunch. I’ll switch things up from time to time, but it saves me from decision fatigue. 6:50 p.m. — Husband gets Two Boots pizza for dinner. I have a slice of the Meg and a slice of the classic cheese, plus one of the beers leftover from last night. 8:50 p.m. — I’m craving another kombucha and looking for a $5 in my wallet. My husband gives me his card and says he’ll cover the drink if I get him a rice pudding. DAILY TOTAL: $81.23 SEE THE REST OF THE STORY AT BUSINESS INSIDER

Here's why the royal family doesn't use a last name

[royal family thumb space fixed]Reuters; Wikipedia; Getty/Chris Jackson THE INSIDER SUMMARY: • BEFORE 1917, THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY HAD NO LAST NAME AT ALL. • THAT YEAR, KING GEORGE V DECREED THAT THE FAMILY SURNAME WOULD BE WINDSOR.  • TODAY'S ROYALS STILL DON'T _NEED _A LAST NAME, BUT IT'S TECHNICALLY MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR, A BLEND OF THE QUEEN AND HER HUSBAND'S SURNAMES. • OTHER ROYALS USE THEIR FAMILY'S TERRITORIAL DESIGNATION (LIKE WALES OR YORK) AS A LAST NAME.  ------------------------- The British Royal family live their lives in the public eye, but there's one thing about them that not a lot of people know: Their last name.  That's simply because, in general, they don't need a last name. They're so famous that they're easily identifiable without one. But when members of the royal family need to use a last name — when they're in school or in the military, for example — they actually have a few choices. Here's a breakdown of all their options — and how it got to be this way in the first place.  BEFORE 1917, ROYALS DIDN'T USE LAST NAMES AT ALL.  [royal family last name king george v]Reuters; Wikipedia; Getty/Chris Jackson Back then, royalty had only their first names and the name of the house or dynasty they were part of, according to the Royal Family's official website. You've probably heard of some of these dynasty names, like the House of Tudor and the House of York. In 1917, when King George V had been on the throne for seven years, he decided to change the house name from  Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. He made the switch because of anti-German sentiments brewing at the start of World War I (the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha name was of German origin). "Windsor" came from Windsor Castle, one of the royal family's properties.  But he wasn't just changing the dynasty name. George V also specified that Windsor was to became the royal family's official surname, too.  Today, the royal family is still known as the House of Windsor, and in a broad, general sense, Windsor is still the royal last name.  WHEN QUEEN ELIZABETH II CAME TO POWER, SHE MADE A SLIGHT MODIFICATION.  [queen elizabeth prince philip]Reuters; Wikipedia; Getty/Chris Jackson In 1947, princess Elizabeth (George V's granddaughter) married Philip Mountbatten, a former Greek and Danish prince who had joined the British Royal Navy. Just a few years later, the young couple were thrust to the very top of the monarchy: Elizabeth's father died, making her Queen Elizabeth II. Mountbatten became Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.  In 1960, Elizabeth and Philip decided that they wanted to differentiate their particular branch of the royal family tree from all the others. They decreed that their descendants would carry the hyphenated last name Mountbatten-Windsor. There's one exception, though: Any royal with the title "His Royal Highness Prince" or "Her Royal Highness Princess" doesn't _need_ to use a surname at all. They can use Mountbatten-Windsor if they need to (the Queen's daughter, Princess Anne, used it on her marriage certificate in 1973, for instance) but it's not an obligation.  BUT ROYALS DON'T ALWAYS USE THE MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR NAME, THOUGH.  [royal family last name]Reuters; Wikipedia; Getty/Chris Jackson Some members of the royal clan have used their family's territorial designation instead. For example: When Prince William and Prince Harry served in the military, they went by William Wales and Harry Wales — because their father is the Prince of Wales. And The Daily Beast reports that Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice have gone by Eugenie York and Beatrice York, since their father, Prince Andrew, is the Duke of York.  There are few other last names kicking around, too: Princess Anne's kids simply took their father's last name — Phillips. And the daughter of Prince Edward, Earl of Essex, just goes by Windsor, without the Mountbatten.  As the Royal Family's official website notes: "A proclamation on the Royal Family name [...] does not pass into the law of the land." No one's really forced to use the official surname, and newly crowned kings and queens aren't bound to follow the surname rules set by their predecessors.  THE BOTTOM LINE: Unsurprisingly, the complicated royal family has a complicated buffet of acceptable surnames. Technically, their last name is Windsor, though direct descendants of the queen can use Mountbatten-Windsor if they ever need it. Some royals use territorial names, but most — including the young Prince George and Princess Charlotte — stick to first names only.  NOW WATCH: The line of succession to the British throne when the Queen dies

Weetabix with ham and eggs: ‘I nearly choked’

The back of some packets suggest a version of eggs benedict made with Weetabix instead of muffins. We put the idea to the test… Brexit is going to bring change that some of us may find hard to swallow. The price of croissants may go up. It could be more difficult to get hold of proper Greek yoghurt, or German rye bread, and we may have to look further afield for breakfast inspiration – so perhaps Weetabix is to be applauded for getting ahead of the game with the American-inspired serving suggestion currently gracing some of its boxes. “Benedict’s eggs” is an eggs benedict in which the traditional, and very American “English” muffin is replaced by, wait for it, one of its very British wholegrain breakfast biscuits. You could say it’s taking our country back, one baked good at a time. Continue reading...

9 of history's greatest philosophers reveal the secret to happiness

[socrates philosopher death ancient greece]Art Gallery ErgsArt - by ErgSap Follow/Flickr A well-stocked Netflix queue can go a long way toward pure and utter happiness, but sometimes there's still something missing. For those moments, it can help to fall back on the wisdom of history's greatest thinkers: Kierkegaard, Socrates, Thoreau, and Confucius. Here's what philosophers discovered about happiness long before orange became the new black. BERTRAND RUSSELL Mike Nudelman/Business Insider It's out of character for someone like Bertrand Russell, a lover of mathematics, science, and logic, to dabble in something so negotiable as happiness.  But his idea that happiness can be found in the surrender to visceral feelings of love rings true — and contemporary science seems to be on his side.  FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE Mike Nudelman/Business Insider For Nietzsche, the famous mustachioed nihilist, happiness is a kind of control one has over their surroundings. The German philosopher wrote frequently on the impacts that power (and a lack of power) can have on people's lived experiences. When people resist, they take back their agency. That sense of self can then turn into happiness. JOHN STUART MILL Mike Nudelman/Business Insider John Stuart Mill was a titan of liberalism, perhaps its most important figure in history. He spread the gospel of liberty wherever he could. When it came to happiness, he adopted the wisdom of the ancient Greeks. Instead of inundating his life with goods, Mill believed in utilitarianism. He believed in using things for a purpose, and if they served no purpose, he banished them from his life. SEE THE REST OF THE STORY AT BUSINESS INSIDER

Wall Street's top political risk analyst on the refugee crisis, Vox Populi, and Trump's Twitter account

[Tina Fordham high res bio photo]Citi Tina Fordham, managing director and chief global political analyst at Citi, watches how geopolitical and socioeconomic risks can impact the markets. She recently spoke with Business Insider about how political risk analysis has changed, the uptick in political uncertainty in the US, and new sources of political risk. _This interview was lightly edited for clarity._ ELENA HOLODNY: WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND WHEN EXAMINING GEOPOLITICAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC TRENDS? TINA FORDHAM: One of the important factors to keep in mind is the direction of travel for a key indicator, such as a leader's approval ratings, whether strengthening or declining and the rate of the change — or whether they hold broadly steady, as in the case of Russian president Vladimir Putin. So, for example, when we look at German Chancellor Angela Merkel's approval ratings after three terms in office, they remain enviably ‎high, a remarkable achievement for a leader of an advanced economy. Consider what has hurt her otherwise strong approval ratings the hardest — not the unpopular bailouts during the euro crisis, but rather the refugee crisis. In the midst of the peak of the refugee flows, in the late summer and early autumn of 2015, her ratings sank the hardest and fastest of her time in office. Notably, the refugee crisis hurt Merkel’s ratings more than the widely unpopular Eurozone bailouts. But in our view, she is still likely to be re-elected to a fourth term as chancellor, as her competitors trail behind. As Europe’s political backstop, Merkel’s leadership is a critical component to EU political stability. HOLODNY: LAST JANUARY, YOU DREW A DISTINCTION BETWEEN "OLD" GEOPOLITICAL RISKS (MILITARY BUILD-UP, PROXY WARS, FAILED STATES) VERSUS THE "NEW" SOCIOECONOMIC RISKS (VOX POPULI, DECLINING TRUSTS IN ELITES, INCOME INEQUALITY, REFERENDA). TO SOME, IT MIGHT SEEM INTUITIVE THAT GEOPOLITICS PRESENTS A GREATER RISK, BUT COULD SOCIOECONOMIC RISKS PRESENT THE BIGGER CHALLENGE? HOW? FORDHAM: This question really gets at the heart of the changing nature of political risk. When I first started my career, in the then new field of financial markets political analysis, in the late 1990's, the themes that were most in demand were either geopolitical risks — primarily those likely to impact oil prices — and the political transitions that were bringing in new governments and policies in large EM transition economies like China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. Both for 2016 and 2017 — for the first time — we highlight political risk in advanced economies as the top political risk for investors, a significant change in trend. In 2016 we flagged the risk of Brexit and Trump as our top Global Political Risks. For 2017, we highlight the continued evolution of the Brexit process plus the US regime ‎change as well as a constellation of systemically significant European elections. These are scheduled in France, the Netherlands, and Germany, but we've also flagged the potential for early elections in the UK and Italy. REUTERS/Darren Staples]Citi We also need to be prepared for new sources of political risk. The allegations of foreign interference in the US election have prompted concerns of interference in other strategically significant elections in Europe this year. Such developments can not only generate surprises and impact final outcomes but also cast additional strain on public trust in democratic institutions and processes. Finally, however much markets may be welcoming Trumponomics, Donald Trump's Twitter account could well be one of the bigger and more unpredictable sources of political risk for markets in 2017. With 140 characters, any time of the day or night, Trump can make statements that hurt a company's share price or prompt a change in strategy, spark confusion amongst foreign leaders or spook allies. HOLODNY: HOW SHOULD WE ADJUST OUR THINKING ABOUT OLD GEOPOLITICS AND NEW SOCIOECONOMIC RISKS IN A WORLD WHERE WE SEE MORE AND MORE PROBLEMS WITH GLOBAL GOVERNANCE (EX: FAILED STATES, THE RISE OF NON-STATE ACTORS, A FRAYING EU, ETC.) FORDHAM: Poor governance has always been a major source of underlying risks, most closely linked with civil war, cross-border conflict and state failure. Until recently, the consequences of poor governance have largely been country-specific or regional. The refugee crisis — a culmination of conflict, state failure and failed nation-building efforts — changed that, opening a new channel for transmitting political risks from the Middle East, East Africa, the Balkans and Afghanistan to the towns and suburbs of developed Europe. We stated then that the refugee crisis was evidence of a new channel opening to transmit political risk from regional to systemic. In the past, the two primary transmission mechanisms had been a growth shock or an oil price shock. HOLODNY: ONE OF YOUR BIG "NEW SOCIOECONOMIC RISK" THEMES IS THE VOX POPULI RISK, WHICH REFERS TO SHIFTING AND MORE VOLATILE PUBLIC OPINION THAT POSES ONGOING, FAST-MOVING RISKS TO BUSINESS AND MARKETS. WE SAW THIS IN THE US ELECTIONS THIS YEAR. WHAT MIGHT THIS DEVELOPMENT MEAN FOR THE US LONGER-TERM? FORDHAM: The mutation of Vox Populi risk from a largely EM phenomenon — think Arab Spring and the Russian, Brazilian and Indian mass protests between 2011-2013 — to a DM phenomenon has important consequences that have yet to be fully realized. Most observers of the US political outlook take comfort in the strength and independence of US political institutions, the system of checks and balances, an independent media and a strong civil society. Yet following his Twitter criticisms of Fed Chief Janet Yellen, the CIA, the New York Times, and even companies like Boeing, Trump seems determined to re-write the rules of the game and overturn decades of political convention. [Donald Trump]Citi Some think this is just what the US needs, others fear the chipping away of cherished institutions. Time will tell. Political risk and policy uncertainty are on the rise in the US, though judging by the market response, most investors have chosen to focus on the potential for deregulation, tax cuts, and fiscal expansion alone. HOLODNY: BUT THE US ISN'T THE ONLY DEVELOPED MARKET SEEING THIS TREND, ALTHOUGH IT'S CERTAINLY DIFFERENT IN EACH COUNTRY. WHAT MIGHT THE VOX POPULI RISK MEAN FOR THE UPCOMING FRENCH AND GERMAN ELECTIONS INTERNALLY AND FOR THE EUROZONE MORE BROADLY — ESPECIALLY GIVEN THAT BOTH COUNTRIES ARE THE PILLARS OF THE EUROZONE? FORDHAM: See above for most of the answers, but France will be particularly in focus because of the implications of French elections far beyond the country itself. It is possible to imagine the EU without the UK, Greece, and even Italy — though "Ital-exit" would likely be a significant economic and currency shock. The EU would not continue to exist in its current form in the event of a French exit — the platform that the Front National (FN) [led by Marine Le Pen] are running on. A Le Pen victory is not our base case, but the advance of Vox Populi risk and its mutation into advanced economies means it cannot be ruled out. We advise investors not to focus on base case scenarios and instead consider the consequences of what we used to call "tail risks" in more depth. The Latest: Serbia urges migrants to get out of frigid cold

Serbia's authorities are urging all migrants to move to the Balkan country's asylum centers during the cold spell that has gripped the country bringing heavy snow and extremely low temperatures. Greece's navy has sent a tank landing ship to the island of Lesbos to house refugees and migrants during a cold snap that has triggered public health warnings. A medical association on Lesbos said Tuesday that conditions at the main camp there were "inhuman" with migrants in tents exposed to freezing temperatures. Schools have been closed on Lesbos because of the bad weather, as a state of emergency was expanded to other areas in northern Greece, where snow has blocked roads and caused power and water outages.
