Appointment of a Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Combating Anti-Semitism and Safeguarding the Memory of the Holocaust

At the decision of Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos, Dr. Efstathios Lianos Liantis, Special Secretary of Religious and Cultural Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was appointed Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Combating Anti-Semitism and Safeguarding the Memory of the Holocaust. Dr. Lianos Liantis is also the head of the Greek delegation at the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), and a founding member of the Holocaust Museum of Greece. With the appointment of Dr. Lianos Liantis as Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Combating Anti-Semitism and Safeguarding the Memory of the Holocaust, the fight against anti-Semitism is institutionally strengthened, and the importance that Greece places on the intensification of relative actions is highlighted, based on the IHRA’s definition of anti-Semitism, which was also adopted by the Ministry of Education. This initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was welcomed both by the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the World Jewish Congress, which represents more than one hundred Jewish communities around the world, as well as by members of Jewish-American organisations with which the Minister of Foreign Affairs had the opportunity to meet during his most recent visit (01-05 April 2019) to the United States.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Bolaris today received Afashan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, along with her associates. The meeting was carried out in an very positive climate, in follow-up of the constructive cooperation that took place the previous day, between the UNICEF team and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, to examine a request by UNICEF to establish a Partnership Office in Greece. The Deputy Minister referred to UNICEF’s presence in Greece and expressed the Greek government's recognition of its contribution in protecting minors, including young refugees. Ms. Khan spoke with especially warm words about the reception that UNICEF enjoys in Greece, as well as the support of its actions, and expressed her certitude that the establishment of the Partnership Office will strengthen cooperation with Greek ministries involved in managing the needs of minors, incorporating into it appropriate programmes which will upgrade the effective national procedures for their registration, identification, and education. In April, the Interim Accord between Greece and UNICEF for the establishment of the Organisation’s Partnership Office will be finalised through an exchange of letters, whose ultimate goal will be the signing of a Headquarters Agreement.

Sky and Ground review – refugee family's nail-biting trek from war

In this warmly humane documentary, three generations of one resourceful Syrian family head for Germany on foot ‘You’re skinny. I’ll feed you falafel for a month when you get here.” A Syrian teenager stranded in a refugee camp near the Greece-Macedonia border is video chatting with her cousin who’s made it to Berlin in this humane, extremely watchable documentary that follows three generations of one family as they leave the camp on foot carrying all their belongings on a 3,000km journey to Germany. First they were bombed out of Aleppo, everything they had stolen by war. Now they must sneak across Europe like thieves. The star of show is “uncle Guevara”, Abdallah Nabi – the group’s de facto leader. Guevara is a charismatic guy in his early 30s equipped with a bandana and restless energy. A student in Aleppo when war broke out, he became an activist, filming the regime’s bomb attacks on the city. Now, as the family wade through rivers, he spends most of his time dissuading the others from phoning smugglers – who make big bucks from empty promises of a safe passage to Germany for 800 euros a person. Continue reading...
