EU rejects Italy's budget, raising stakes in dispute

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union set up a high-stakes battle with Italy, one of the bloc's biggest economies, over who has final control over a member state's budget after the executive Commission took the unprecedented step of ordering the country to revise its public spending plans. In a move that escalates a monthlong standoff, the EU said the populist government's budget for next year is out of line and breaks earlier promises to lower public debt. Italy's debt load is the second-highest in Europe, after Greece, and there are worries that losing control of spending could rekindle financial turmoil in Europe. The populist Italian government says the sharp increase in spending is needed to jumpstart growth after years of malaise.

Response of the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandros Yennimatas, to a journalist’s question on statements from the spokesperson of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Extending territorial waters constitutes a legal and inalienable sovereign right of Greece, in accordance with International Law. The relevant decision for extension is solely for Greece to make, which has the right to extend its territorial waters whenever and in whatever manner it sees fit. This right applies consistently and shall not be challenged, nor shall it be up for negotiation with third parties. This applies to all Greek territory. Arbitrary interpretations of International Law and threats of violence on the part of Turkey, as well as challenging the legal rights of our country, neither alters this fact nor contributes to good neighbourly relations.

Medusa review – a snake-haired gorgon for the #MeToo era

Sadler’s Wells, London Jasmin Vardimon’s twist on the ancient Greek myth features near-contortionist dancers and violent choreography let down by a cloudy central concept A billowing plastic sheet covers the stage, whipping up in peaks to imitate ocean waves. A sea made of plastic certainly captures the zeitgeist. Jasmin Vardimon has made a Medusa for the #MeToo era, reminding us that the snake-haired gorgon was not a monstrous man-hater for no reason, but a woman subjected to abuse and left bitterly vengeful. In Spanish, Medusa is the word for jellyfish – thus arises the link between the aquatic theme and Greek myth. In its attempt to combine an ancient tale with contemporary social and environmental concerns, there is a lot going on: darkly atmospheric storytelling, Green politics, kooky dance theatre, energetic choreography, multiple depictions of female objectification and abuse, amusing vignettes and some text direct to the audience, all set to a smörgåsbord of music tracks from Grieg to Aphex Twin. In the context of the celebrations for the National Holiday of 28 October, a formal Memorial Ceremony in Honour of Fallen Greek Soldiers during the Greco-Italian war (1940-1941) is going to be organised on Sunday 28 October 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Military Cemetery of Këlcyrë, and at 12:00 at the Historical Military Cemetery of Bularat. It should be mentioned that this year's commemorative events are taking place a short while following completion, in the Dragot region of Albania, of the work (which will continue in other locations on Albanian territory) pertaining to the search and exhumation of Fallen Greek soldiers, as well as the religious burial ceremonies for the remains of a total of six hundred and seventy-three (673) Greek heroes at the aforementioned Military Cemeteries. For the first time, the Ceremony will be organised in collaboration with the Albanian side, as is provided for, moreover, by the bilateral Inter-state Agreement of Cooperation between Greece and Albania “on the search, exhumation, identification and burial of Greek Military Fallen in action in Albania during the Greek-Italian war of 1940-1941 and cemetery construction on the territory of the Republic of Albania for their burial” which began being implemented following the meetings between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Greece and Albania in Crete, in November 2017, and in Korçë in January 2018. The relevant schedule is attached to provide information especially to the families and friends of the Fallen Greek Soldiers who wish to participate in the Memorial Ceremony.
