The Thieves of Community History

In my travels across Greek America I have found in virtually every community someone or some small group attempting to preserve local history. These are always persons who involve themselves in such efforts out of love for their ancestors and those who long ago constituted their home communities. Few of these collectives have a national […]

Catarrhal Fever Threatens Sheep in Peloponnese

An outbreak of catarrhal fever disease among sheep in southern Greece has spread all over the Peloponnese region with dozens of herds flocks being infected, authorities announced on Friday. The regional council convened in the presence of stock breeders from the region in order to discuss the situation and decide on emergency measures. It is reported that the virus spread through an insect and does not affect humans. The director of the Region’s Veterinary Service said that the contagion is spreading at a fast rate and stressed that 88 herds have been found to be infected in the entire region as of Friday, a number that is expected to climb as inspections continue. A regional official said that in the prefecture of Laconia, 45 herds had been found to be infected on Thursday, reaching 60 on Friday. The regional council approved the signing of a contract with the Peloponnisos S.A. development company in order to implement an integrated program to locate and eliminate the carrier of cattarhal fever in the Peloponnese Region at a cost of 498,000 euros. Authorities said the contract opens the way to map the sheep breeding units and start spraying on Saturday morning, in the hope of preventing further contagion.

World Cup: Fernando Santos Says Greece Could Have Stolen a Win Against Japan

Greece’s national team manager, Fernando Santos, praised his players’ efforts in the game against Japan during most of which Greece played with ten men. The Greeks drew 0-0 against Japan on Thursday, even though they lost captain Kostas Katsouranis seven minutes before half -time. “When Katsouranis was sent off, the balance of the game changed fundamentally,” Santos told reporters. “Without the red card we probably could have won the game. “I told my players at half-time that the way to fight back was to work well defensively and try to counterattack but you need to have the ball at the right moment to use the spaces and the wings,” he said. “I believe we did part of that well but had difficulties in other parts.” Greece will reach the round of 16 if they defeat Ivory Coast and Japan fail to beat Colombia on Tuesday, and that is why Santos offered some advice to the Colombians: “Please don’t let Japan win. That is what I have to say, I can’t say anything else,” he said with a loud laugh. “We have to win (against Ivory Coast), a draw is not enough,” said Santos. “There is no alternative but to win. We must face the game as we did against Russia (at Euro Cup 2012).” Greece had to win their last group game in that tournament to advance and they stunned group favorites Russia 1-0 to move into the last eight. The draw leaves Greece and Japan with one point each in Group C, five adrift of leaders Colombia – who have secured a spot in the knockout stages – but only two behind second-place Ivory Coast.

Libération: Greece Sells Out Everything

The French newspaper Libération published a double page spread dedicated to the privatization efforts by the Greek government that are implemented under the pressure of the troika and in the face of people’s indignation. “Greece is selling whatever it can in order to lighten the debt due to the innumerable demands of its creditors,” writes the journalist Nathalie Dubois in the article with the title ‘Greece sells all, Greeks in the wind’. According to Libération, the Water Utility of Thessaloniki (EYATH) is now on the forefront of the privatization process and has already attracted the interest of eight foreign investors from Europe, Asia, and the United Arab Emirates. However, the Council of State recently ruled that a similar sale of the Athens Water Utility (EYDAP) was unconstitutional raising major doubts about the EYATH privatization. In the article of Libération it is stated that the president of the HRADF Konstantinos Maniatopoulos was quoted as saying that, “it will be difficult to continue the process for EYATH without taking into account the decision for EYDAP.” In addition, Ms Dubois outlines the extensive catalogue of state assets that the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) is looking to sell: “38 airports, the Public Power Corporation, thermal springs, 700 kilometers of motorway, 100 ports, hotels, a castle, and 2000 square meters of land in Corfu, hundreds of acres of sea front property…” She notes though that the program is not advancing due to delays or failures while public opposition is growing and concludes that the IMF is ‘irritated’ as the delays of the privatization program are turning away investors.

4th Athens Open Air Film Festival

Greece is famous for its islands, beaches, and ancient monuments, but a lot of visitors have also come to appreciate its unique open air cinemas. Thanks to the ideal climate of the country, open air cinemas have flourished all over Greece for years, while some are built on magnificent locations with great views. For example, if you ever find yourself watching a boring movie in Cine Thision, you can relax, look up, and admire the view of Acropolis. However, open air cinemas have been hit by the Greek financial crisis. Therefore, the 4th Athens Open Air Film Festival is a good opportunity for Athenians and visitors to attend free screenings of classic films. The screenings will include various modern and old-time classic movies, starting on June 20 and continuing through September 4. The screenings will take place at Athens’ most notable open air movie theaters, and also in some more unusual places such as the park of Nea Smyrni, the Monetary Museum, the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street, and the Byzantium and Christian Museum. Citizens and visitors in Athens will have the chance to enjoy free screenings of movies such as “Groundhog Day” by Harold Ramis, the classic musical “All that Jazz” by Bob Fosse, and even Woody Allen’s masterpiece “Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

China, Greece Get Close; Samaras, Li Visit Crete

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is wrapping up a three-day visit to Greece on June 21 with a visit to Crete – along with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras – as the two leaders talked about closer business and cultural ties. Some 19 deals worth nearly $5 billion were signed and one of the highlights was a tour of the port of Piraeus, now mostly run by the Chinese company Cosco, which wants to build its stake in the operations to 67 percent as China expands its presence across the country in ports and infrastructure. Le said he sees Piraeus as “China’s gateway to Europe.” In shirt sleeves and tieless, the two cited the port’s potential. Li described it as “the pearl in the Mediterranean” and said he was keen to work with the Greeks to make it “the most competitive port in the world.” After the business was concluded, Samaras and Li moved more toward focusing on other ties, including tourism, and to support each other’s stance on world issues. China said it backed a UN-mediated settlement to reunify Cyprus, divided since an unlawful 1974 invasion by Turkey, while Greece said it would support Chinese investment efforts with the European Union. Samaras and Li also agreed to help each other in the financing, investment and trade sectors and to correct trade imbalances, with Greece seeing keen interest from the Chinese in its products and as more Chinese flock to Greece as tourists and for island weddings. China is also interested in scooping up state enterprises in a lagging privatization program, citing the country’s archaic and money-bleeding railway system that could be used to transport goods to the rest of Europe, which has far superior railroads and lines. Li noted that the use of Piraeus as a hub had already reduced the time it takes to transport Chinese exports to the EU by between seven to 11 days. The development of the shipyard zone at Piraeus is another goal, he said. Marine transport and shipbuilding reportedly topped the agenda of talks at a lunch given by President Karolos Papoulias in Li’s honor and attended by Samaras as well as several key cabinet members including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos and Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. Papoulias, who met with Li separately, called him “a great friend of Greece.” Li and Samaras also visited the Acropolis and Athens’s National Archaeological Museum, with Li calling it “wonderful,” after comparing the country’s ancient and famed cultures. Li asked asked questions to the museum’s Alternate Director George Kakavas regarding the Greeks’ know-how in the processing of plant colors. The brief visit ended with a tour of the hall with the exhibit on the Antikythera Shipwreck and mechanism, the Athens News Agency reported. Before departing, the prime minister and his wife received commemorative gifts from Samaras’ wife and the director of the National Archaeological Museum. On Crete, where Samaras was to join him, Le was expected to reiterate Beijing’s interest in a new international airport near the port of Iraklio. Li arrived on the island late on June 20 and was due to also see the archaeological site of Knossos and the Iraklio Archaeological Museum, together with Samaras, to inaugurate a renovated wing. The Chinese prime minister and his delegation were welcomed at the airport by Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis, Decentralised Administration Secretary General Grigoris Rokadakis, Iraklio Mayor Yiannis Kourakis and deputies. The Chinese delegation is staying in Hersonissos.

China urges peaceful development of seas, says conflict leads to "disaster"

China, involved in a growing dispute with its neighbors over the energy-rich South China Sea, wants to promote peaceful development of the oceans, Premier Li Keqiang said, warning conflicts in the past had only brought "disaster for humanity". China claims almost the entire ocean, rejecting rival claims to parts of it from Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei in one of Asia's most intractable disputes and a possible flashpoint. It also has a long-running dispute with Japan in the East China Sea. "China will unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development and firmly oppose any act of hegemony in maritime affairs," Li said at a maritime summit in Greece on Friday in comments carried by China's Foreign Ministry website on Saturday.
