Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Terens Quick on visit to Tunisia (Tunis, 23 April 2019)

“Tunisia is a country with which we have excellent political and diplomatic relations as well as great interest in strengthening our economic cooperation on all levels. During my contacts here, with the Secretary of State to the Minister of Transport Adel Jarboui, as well as with the Secretary of State to the Minister for Foreign Affairs Sabri Bachtobji, the need was stressed for more structured air and sea connections. On the one hand, the air connection will commence from the beginning of June, during the tourist season, with direct flights by AEGEAN, and on the other, the sea connection which pertains to commercial transports is in the works, with very special conditions, thanks to two shipping companies with which we are still holding discussions, though I am unable to provide further details at the moment. Greek entrepreneurs that are active in Tunisia entrusted me with this issue as an immediate priority, given that there is a great delay in receipt of all types of goods they order from Greece. And as you can understand, timely and accurate delivery of goods also benefits the outward-looking nature of Greek enterprises and the Greek economy. Moreover, every year we have a very significant increase in the trade balance to the benefit of Greece.” This is what Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Terens Quick stated, completing his one-day visit to Tunisia as the head of the business mission (SEV-ACCI-SEVE), as well as with bilateral meetings of special interest. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs especially thanked the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts for the excellent organisation of the economic forum, with numerous B2B meetings which led to very positive results. Along with the business mission, Mr Quick also met with the Presidium and members of the Greek Community in Tunisia, a meeting that was attended also by Metropolitan Meletios of Carthage. On the part of the Greek community, there was one sole request: for a teacher from Greece to be posted, to run the Greek language department, in which Tunisians also show particular interest, who are interested in learning Greek for educational and business purposes. The Greek Ambassador to Tunisia, Teresa Angelatou, accompanied the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs on all his meetings.

Highlights of Minister for Foreign Affairs G. Katrougalos’ interview to the Chinese news agency “XinHua” (24.04.2019)

In light of his participation in the Greek mission headed by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in the second Forum of the "Belt and Road Initiative" in Beijing, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Katrougalos, granted an interview to the electronic edition of XinHua news agency, and to journalists Yu Shuaishuai, Maria Spiliopoulou, and Li Xiaopeng. The Minister for Foreign Affairs reminded that China was the first country he visited in his capacity as Minister for Foreign Affairs, a fact which is perhaps due to the better level of bilateral relations that the two countries have enjoyed in recent years, as well as the full alignment of their economic interests. Building upon the friendship, the mutual respect which characterises the bilateral relations, and the already developed strategic partnership between Greece and China, the Minister for Foreign Affairs declared that, together with his interlocutors in China, he will look into ways of further promoting the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. Referring specifically to the presence of COSCO Shipping in Piraeus, Mr Katrougalos stressed that it pertains to particularly successful investment, which has assigned to Piraeus a large portion of the trade carried out through the Mediterranean. The additional investments of COSCO in the expansion of the port’s infrastructure, added the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will contribute to the common effort by the two countries for further strengthening of the commercial role of the port of Piraeus. At this point, Mr Katrougalos stressed that the investment in question is successful not only on economic terms but it also has a social nature, as it aided the local community over the course of the 10-year economic crisis. With regard to the Chinese Belt Road Initiative, the Minister for Foreign Affairs stressed that it represents a prime example of how two countries ought to face the common future of all countries with regard to economic prosperity. Greece wants to exploit its strategic advantage as a bridge between Asia, Africa, and Europe, and for the Chinese initiative to be linked to the corresponding interconnectivity of the European Union in order for the country to be transformed, through infrastructure works which will link Piraeus with Central Europe, into a centre for transports and logistical support, as well as a port of entry for Chinese goods into Europe. Greece’s role, stressed the Minister for Foreign Affairs, is to act as a bridge between Europe, to which it belongs, and China, highlighting their common points which include a commitment to multilateralism in international relations, peaceful relations, and respect of International Law.

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Sia Anagnostopoulou meets with the Chief Administrative Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Αbabu Namwamba (Athens, 24 April 2019)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Sia Anagnostopoulou met with the Chief Administrative Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ababu Namwamba, in the presence of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Terens Quick. During the meeting, which was conducted in an especially warm climate, the excellent level of the bilateral relations between the two countries was stressed, while ways of strengthening bilateral political, economic, trade, and cultural cooperation were examined. In this context, the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs proposed that the prospect of organising a Greek-Kenyan Joint Interministerial Committee (JIC) be looked into, which will contribute to further rapprochement between the two countries. The proposal was especially well received by the Kenyan side. Sia Anagnostopoulou praised Kenya for its stabilising role in the region of East Africa and expressed her wish that the other member states of the East African Community proceed with the conclusion and ratification of the economic cooperation agreement with the European Union.
