Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis discussed the Future of Europe, his participation in negotiations at EU General Affairs Council meetings but also Greece of the past and Greece of today, as a guest in an episode of the EuPods podcast, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Greece accession to the EU, with the support of the Representation of the European Commission in Greece. In an in-depth discussion with journalist Apostolos Magiriadis, Mr. Varvitsiotis analyzed and explained how in Brussels one learns to "step into the shoes" of one’s interlocutors and how Europe could be transformed into a world power in the coming years, in the context of the dialogue that has opened on the Future of the continent. "Europe should first and foremost aim for greater speed and transparency in terms of timetables and decision-making process," the Alternate Minister noted, referring to the axes on which the Europe of tomorrow must move. "We must also look at the external image of Europe and how Europe can eventually be transformed into a force that will shape global developments," he added. Enhancing Europe's strategic autonomy is equally important, he stressed, not only in terms of health care, as the COVID-19 pandemic has shown, but also in terms of technology and defence, as in the field of defence industry. The issue of migration, which divides North and South, is also crucial, as no common ground has been found yet to deal with illegal migration flows and protect the countries at the EU’s external borders through concluding return agreements. Regarding his participation in General Affairs Council meetings, Mr. Varvitsiotis, describing his experience to date, notes that the most difficult part of the negotiation was the European budget, as there were different aspirations from the member states. “In EU General Affairs Council meetings, what we do for the most part is to have a good idea of what the positions of others are and where their red lines are drawn, so that respectively we can express our positions and use our bargaining chips or vice versa. What I have learned from my participation in these Council meetings so far – and, I think, all Greeks have learned in a tough way - is that we should step into the shoes of our interlocutors much more often and in a much more timely fashion before we decide make a claim. One should be able to move forward and present proposals, such as the EU digital COVID certificate, and to remain center stage and not on the margins”, he pointedly said. In the same interview, Mr. Varvitsiotis compares the European leadership of the past and the present. He describes Jean-Claude Junker as “a passionate advocate of the European vision”, adding that “he was the man we had the good fortune to be head of the European Commission during the critical period of the financial crisis”. Referring to Ursula von der Leyen, he notes that she has achieved “amazing things”, such as the pan-European vaccination program and the approvement of national recovery plans within a short time. He recalls stories by his father, Ioannis Varvitsiotis, who, following Konstantinos Karamanlis, led the European course of the country since the early 1960s, as he says, having realized the importance of being at the core of the West, against the anti-European sentiment of the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s. Finally, he talks about the state of Greece before its accession to the European Economic Community in 1980, a country of scarce resources with a small international airport at Hellinikon, contrasting it with Greece of Today, a country with large infrastructure projects such as the Metro, the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, the National Roads and the International Airport at Spata.

Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias following the briefing of representatives of Parliamentary Parties (Athens, 29. 07. 2021)
I had today a series of meetings with the representatives of Parliamentary parties except for KINAL. I will meet with Mr. Loverdos next week, due to pre-arranged commitments he had today. These discussions are held in the context of regular contacts with the parties on foreign policy issues, in line with the instructions of Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis. I referred to the recent developments in the Cyprus issue in the light of Turkish illegal declarations on Varosha. As you know, there was intensive diplomatic action last week on this issue and, in fact, in close coordination with the Cypriot side, with the President, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and with my counterpart, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides. Besides, the Prime Minister spoke extensively about this issue yesterday in his contacts with the President of Cyprus and the King of Jordan. Our goal was the condemnation of Turkish actions both within the UN and the Security Council, as well as at European Union level. And this goal, I can say, was achieved despite the reservations expressed by some states. It is important that countries such as the US, Russia, China, India, France, Ireland unequivocally condemned the Turkish declarations. It has also become clear that if Turkey continues its infringing conduct there will be consequences. In fact, the Greek side, through a letter that, following my instructions, was delivered to the UN Secretary General, refuted the unsound arguments of the Turkish side with regard to the militarization of the islands in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean. At the same time, the destabilizing role of Turkey in our wider region was underlined; starting with the unacceptable casus belli. Turkey is the only country in the world that has issued a threat of war against another country, if, in fact, this country exercises its lawful rights. Turkey must, at last, realize that it cannot behave as if we were in the 18th or 19th century. It must acknowledge that we live in the 21st century; that the Ottoman Empire has ceased to exist for 100 years; and that respect for International Law and the Law of the Sea is a fundamental principle guiding relations between all states. And let me say that such an acknowledgement is also in the interest of Turkish society, a large part of which, I think, shares these positions.

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our city, Athens, today, following the meeting we had in Rome a few weeks ago. As an initial statement, I would like to emphasize that Greece has stood and continues to stand by Lebanon. Allow me to remind that we responded immediately to the needs of Lebanon after the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut about a year ago. Actually, we were the first country to offer rescue teams and humanitarian aid the very next day. Besides, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kostas Fragogiannis was the head of the Greek delegation. And the Mitsotakis government - I also want to be clear on that - is committed to further supporting Lebanon. Dear colleague, we are going to contribute to supporting the Greek Orthodox Hospital of Saint George in Beirut. We also considered our country's contribution to the reconstruction of the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In early September, a team will travel to Beirut to draw up the relevant reconstruction plan. Furthermore, we discussed the possibility of Greece financially supporting the University of Balamand and I am glad that you think this is something that would be of assistance. We will also attend the international conference on the reconstruction of Lebanon next week. I would like to take this opportunity to express my most heartfelt condolences over the loss of lives in the devastating wildfires in northern Lebanon. And to add that, if you deem it necessary, Greece is always ready to provide assistance in addressing natural disasters. At this point, I would like to open a short parenthesis. I would like to extend my sincere condolences and the sincere condolences of the Greek government and the Greek people to the Turkish government and the Turkish people, over the loss of lives caused by wildfires in the region of Antalya. Peoples demonstrate their solidarity to each other, especially during difficult times. Yesterday I called the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, my friend Mr. Çavuşoğlu, and I conveyed to him, after consultation with the Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, our readiness, if Turkey deems it necessary, to help in any way we can. Let me return to the context of the visit and reiterate that we will continue to support Lebanon within the European Union as well. We were one of the countries that emphasized from the beginning that the new financial aid for the Syrian refugees should not be directed only to Turkey. It should be directed to other countries in the region that host refugees, such as Lebanon and Jordan. For Greece, the stability and cohesion of Lebanon is a key priority. Lebanon is a friendly neighbouring country, part of our immediate neighbourhood. Further destabilization of Lebanon would have a negative impact on both our country and the European Union. We also attach great importance to the Greek Diaspora; we attach great importance to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and this interest was underlined by the visit of Deputy Minister Kostas Vlasis to Lebanon a few days ago. For this reason, we would like to see the challenges Lebanon faces at home and abroad being addressed as soon as possible. We would like to see the formation of a stable government that will take the necessary steps to receive foreign aid, which is available, and that will lead Lebanon to elections in 2022. On an issue concerning the wider region, I would like to say that we are also concerned about the destabilizing role of neighbouring Turkey. I cannot fail to refer to Turkey's illegal declarations on Varosha, which are the most recent example of Turkish illegal conduct in our region; declarations that ignore and are contrary to the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. It is now becoming clear that Turkey uses every means of destabilization and I do not need to remind anyone that Famagusta is a short distance from Lebanon. In the face of all destabilizing efforts, we oppose our stance which is in accordance with International Law and good neighbourly relations. Of great importance is the International Law of the Sea, UNCLOS, which both Greece and Lebanon have signed and ratified. In order to achieve the goals of stability and prosperity, we will continue to work with the Lebanese government and people, both bilaterally and within the European Union, but I must also say within the framework of the trilateral cooperation schemes. We agreed with the Minister on the next Lebanon-Greece-Cyprus trilateral summit, which will be held in Nicosia, and we will make sure it takes place as soon as possible. Allow me, once again, to welcome you with great pleasure to Athens today, dear Minister.
