Colt and PCCW Global Demonstrate Speedy Payment Settlements using Blockchain Technology

Mar 14, 2018 Picture:  The Proof of Concept undertaken by Colt and PCCW Global reduced inter-carrier settlement time from hundreds of man-hours per month to less than a minute LONDON - (ACN Newswire) - Colt Technology Services and PCCW Global, the international operating division of HKT, have collaborated with Clear, a blockchain start-up company, to demonstrate that inter-carrier settlement times can be reduced from hours to minutes by blockchain technology. The objective of this Proof of Concept (PoC) was to ascertain if the advantages offered by blockchain technology could be applied to make inter-carrier settlements more efficient, reliable, and scalable. This PoC was specifically focused on the settlement area of wholesale voice minutes, as the majority of telecom operators have similar processes for these transactions. Today, despite the financial importance of these settlements to wholesale carriers, they still involve manual transactions which are costly for all parties. In the trial, the application of blockchain's decentralised, cryptographically enforced, immutable ledger technology resulted in tens of thousands of call records being analysed and settled in a few minutes. Using blockchain technology, hundreds of hours of manual work were reduced to seconds of automated verification and settlement. Furthermore, blockchain technology adds an extra layer of security and trust to transactions in an industry where sensitive and proprietary information is frequently exchanged, fraud is rife, and dispute resolution can be lengthy and complex. Most of today's blockchain technologies lack solutions for scalability, contract privacy and enterprise grade business logic, all critical for an industry wide settlement and clearing platform. However, through the use of proprietary technologies, this PoC demonstrated the viability of a blockchain-based wholesale trading system. Both Colt and PCCW Global are members of the ITW Global Leaders' Forum (GLF), where discussions on blockchain have featured heavily, and it was in this forum that the collaboration was cemented. GLF aims to foster an environment within the telecom industry that focuses on ubiquity and interoperability among providers. This PoC was centred around these themes by attempting to understand how a technology such as blockchain can benefit the sector as a whole. Carl Grivner, Chief Executive Officer of Colt, said, "It is our goal to create a more agile, customer oriented organisation, and one way in which we are doing this is by exploring the benefits of disruptive technologies, such as blockchain. Collaborating with PCCW Global and Clear is ground breaking, as we have demonstrated how blockchain can transform the way we conduct business in the telecom industry." Marc Halbfinger, Chief Executive Officer of PCCW Global and the Chairman of the GLF, said, "Everyone is talking about blockchain but the use cases in the telecom industry have been fairly limited until now. Whilst this deployment is currently only at the PoC stage, through our collaboration with Colt we are eager to demonstrate how the many potential uses of blockchain across our industry can deliver value by improving the ways in which we interoperate." Gal Hochberg, Chief Executive Officer of Clear, said, "It is exciting for any business to create something that has the power to truly innovate how an entire industry operates. This PoC marks the beginning of how blockchain is set to revolutionise the telecom sector." During two separate demonstrations, one of which took place at the Pacific Telecommunications Council annual conference in January 2018, the PoC showcased the use of blockchain to positively settle payments for inter-carrier voice traffic. It reduced what can take several weeks, and sometimes months, of intense manual labour down to less than a minute. "This PoC could also see the beginning of a cryptocurrency model where, rather than exchanging cash to settle transactions, carriers could move to a token-based credit environment. If successful, such a model could be rolled out beyond the carrier community to other technology service providers," concluded Mr. Grivner. March 14 is Pi Day - here's what that means

[crop circles] * MARCH 14, WRITTEN OUT AS 3/14 IN THE US AND A FEW OTHER COUNTRIES, IS Π DAY, AS THOSE ARE THE FIRST THREE DIGITS OF THE FAMOUS NUMBER. * Π IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND FASCINATING NUMBERS IN MATH. ------------------------- Happy π day!  March 14, when written out in the American date style of month/day, comes out as 3/14. That coincides with the three first digits of π: 3.14. π is one of the most important numbers in math. As you may recall from basic geometry, π is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. So, anywhere where circles or cyclical things show up, π tends to show up as well. It would be impossible to do geometry, trigonometry, calculus, analysis of waves, or most branches of math without the concept of π. As a number, π is also itself fascinating. π is an irrational number — it can't be written as a fraction of two integers, no matter what integers you choose. One consequence of that is that the infinite decimal expansion of π never adopts a repeating pattern. π is actually a step further than an irrational number, and is what mathematicians call a transcendental number. There are plenty of irrational numbers — the square root of 2, or 3, or any prime number is irrational, as are cube roots and higher-power roots of primes. Transcendental numbers, like π, aren't the roots of any rational number. Another way of saying that is that π raised to any power is still irrational. Even though circles, and therefore π, have been a subject of study for millennia — the great Greek mathematician Archimedes came up with a clever way of approximating π by drawing polygons inside and outside a circle to estimate the circle's circumference — π was only proven to be irrational in the 18th century, and transcendental in the 19th. π day comes with a few caveats, the biggest being that most of the world doesn't write March 14 as 3/14, but instead as 14/3. Still, for residents of the countries that do, π day offers a fun chance to reflect on a very special number. Interview of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Terens Quick, on Komotini r/s “Chronos FM”, with journalist Dimos Bakirtzakis

In his interview on “Chronos FM”, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Terens Quick, stressed the following:“The Greek diaspora community on each continent interacts differently with the Greek homeland. Due to its size, America has to a great extent absorbed the third and fourth generations, and while these generations respect and love the homeland of their forebears, they are less involved in assisting Greek businesses. But their organizations, like those of the Greeks of New York, for instance – those hailing from Komotini – take every opportunity to help the area of Greece they come from, either through sending humanitarian aid or in any other way they can.And while this is the case in America, in Africa, where a handful of Greeks live in each country, they love us and they want to become bridges for Greek enterprises in their adopted homelands. A few days ago, I talked to Greece’s honorary Consul in Mozambique, Gerasimos Markatos. I implored him – within the framework of the business campaign we are carrying out in African countries – to set northern Greece, Macedonia and Thrace as his target. Because we really do have the opportunity to bring specialized businesses that they need, because these African countries are developing and want many kinds of infrastructure to help businesses that can suddenly find themselves with a significantly large clientele.”Regarding the course of the negotiations with fYROM, Mr. Quick stated:“We cannot have the continuation of a situation that creates black holes in the Balkan and induces third countries to intervene in our region,” adding that “in diplomacy you don’t always win 100%; you yield 10% and gain 20%. That is why negotiations are taking place – otherwise we would be talking about an imposition. We can’t be talking about imposition in the 21st century. No one will impose anything on us, and regardless of whether we are advancing the resolution of the name issue, I assure you that Nikos Kotzias is very, very careful with and sensitive to issues that have to do with the history of Greece. And I think it is a success on his part that we persuaded the Skopjans to take down their symbols from the airport and many statues. Because they didn’t do it for 25 years, when Greece had other governments.”In closing, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his complete confidence in the Minister of Foreign Affairs and his optimism that the issue will be resolved. “We have to resolve the issue, and it will be to Greece’s benefit, because we have to become the point of reference in the Balkans and, beyond that, ensure our security so that we can respond to the real regional geopolitical challenges. So Nikos Kotzias is working the right way. Working beside him, I – as well as the ANEL Party – have complete confidence in him, and I think we are making very good progress. The issue will be resolved.” Terens Quick will be in Komotini this coming Monday in the context of the Greek-Armenian Symposium being hosted by the Democritus University of Thrace.
