The NBA world gave the New York Knicks mixed reviews for picking Kristaps Porzingis with the No. 4 pick in the draft. While some people believe Porzingis is worth the risk for the Knicks, others have criticized them for taking a player who's a project with their highest draft pick in decades. Porzingis is something of an unknown to many because so few people have actually seen him play. There are some who believe Porzingis might have the highest ceiling in the draft. At over seven feet, he can shoot three-pointers, take the ball off the dribble, shoot on the move, and his long, athletic frame could make him a great defender. In a profile of Porzingis' time playing in Sevilla from the New York Times' Harvey Araton, former teammates and coaches who've been around Porzngis rave about his potential. Derrick Byars, a teammate of Porzingis' last season in Spain who has also played in the NBA D-League, Germany, Greece, France, and Belgium, told Araton: "I don’t want to go on the record predicting the Hall of Fame, but he’s as seasoned and mature as any 19-year-old in Europe I’ve been around. He’s thin, but it’s a strong thin frame... Kris has endless potential given the right situation, the right opportunity." Dane Watts, a 6'8" forward who also played in Sevilla with Porzingis, described Porzingis' tantalizing length. "I’ve been in Europe a long time and never had my shot blocked that many times in practice. I mean, he’s got that length," he said. Watts also told Araton about one particular game where Porzingis dominated both ends of the floor and later noted the "sky is the limit" for him. Additionally, Scott Roth, a former NBA assistant coach who worked with Porzingis while in Spain, added: "Kris is a tough kid with passion, a worker, and he’s not going to back down from anyone. He’s going to get knocked around a bit the first couple of years, but by the time he’s 23, you could have a monster on your hands." Porzingis does have his work cut out for him. Though he's got raw, natural talent, he needs to bulk up to play with other seven-footers in the NBA. He may be able to produce right away on offense, given that he can stretch the floor and is likely quicker than most players at his size. On defense, he is likely to struggle where he'll get out-muscled by opponents and may have a hard time keeping up with NBA offenses. It may take a few years, but people are going to be anxiously watching Porzingis, looking for this monster potential. Panathinaikos’ team did not perform as well, however ,Vlantimir Giankovits managed to score 17 points, becoming the top scorer of his team. Greek Loukas Mavrokefalidis scored 14 points and Antonis Fotsis scored 11, while the American shooting guard A. J. Slaughter and Uruguayan Esteban Batista scored 10 points each. Olympiacos Piraeus BC was founded in 1931 and it is one of the most successful clubs in European basketball, having won three Euroleague Championships, one Triple Crown, one Intercontinental Cup, eleven Greek Championships and nine Greek Cups. They play their home matches at Peace and Friendship Stadium. Greek team Olympiacos lost the chance to win their 4th European Basketball Championship as they were defeated by “queen” Real Madrid in their hometown. With more than 2,000 Greeks on their side, the Piraeus team was able to sporadically stun the Spanish defense but with no lasting results. This is Real’s first title after 20 years in their participation in the Euroleague with 8 titles so far, 5 more than Olympiacos. Olympiacos made a furious comeback around the 4th minute of the 3d quarter, cutting the distance from 40-29 to 40-41 in just a few minutes, establishing his dominance. The score went to 49-43 just a few seconds before the end of the third quarter and Olympiacos lost more ground, ending with a score of 78-59. Former Houston Rockets player Vassilis Spanoulis, who led his team to the finals with his sneaky 3-pointer against CSKA, showed, once again, a remarkable performance, however it was not enough to lead his team to the European crown. Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo returned to their old neighborhood in Sepolia, Athens, spurring the interest of hundreds of their fans, who hastened to visit the Triton open-air basketball court to watch the NBA brothers participating in a basketball event at the place they first played as children. Panathinaikos announced the dismissal of Dusko Ivanovic, the basketball team’s coach through an official statement. The team’s poor performance against Olympiakos which Panathinaikos lost its advantage, as well as the team’s exclusion from the Euroleague Final 4 lead to the decision to dismiss Ivanovic. Sotiris Manolopoulos, a former coaching staff member will take over as a temporary coach, until the club can find a replacement. According to Eurohoops, former Greek basketball player Panagiotis Giannakis is being considered for the position. However, Panathinaikos’ representatives are denying the rumors and they stressed that no contact has been made between the two parties. “Panathinaikos announces the termination of its cooperation with Dusko Ivanovic and thanks him for his contribution to the team. The coaching responsibility will fall to Sotiris Manolopoulos until a replacement for Ivanovic can be found,” noted the official announcement.
