Barroso in solidarity visit to Greece

by  Kassandra

Although Greece struggles under the cosh of austerity, a word the European Commission is trying to ban in their HQ, a large numbers of Europeans have demonstrated their solidarity, mainly by spending their summer holidays on the Greek beaches, taking advantage of heavily discounted prices.

One such person who is demonstrating solidarity is Jose Barroso, who is sneaking off for bit of beach solidarity on the isle of Skiathos, courtesy of an unnamed friend’s yacht, starting 21 August.

Barroso does love his boating breaks, as we have reported previously.

Perhaps in the austerity principle of the ‘widow’s mite’ the commission’s convivial chief is going incognito. Perhaps he just doesn’t want to be swamped by humble Greeks in admiration of his masterful handling of the economic crisis.

That must be it. Unless he’s going to ‘do a Verheugen’ on the isles deliciously named ‘Banana Beach’.

But although Greece has many thousands of islands, it also has many visitors.

Also heading to Skiathos on the very same day is Martin Schulz, the president of the parliament.

The Greek deputy PM will also be taking a day trip to Skiathos on 21 August.

Quite a coincidence for an island only 12 km long and 6km wide.

Schulz is said to be attending an event dedicated to Professor Dimitris Tsatsos, former MEP, where Evangelos Venizelos will attend.

Barroso? His office refused to say where the president would be, saying it was ‘private’.

Just like the last time…
