Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Sia Anagnostopoulou attended the 18 June meeting of the EU General Affairs Council, in Luxembourg. Following the Council proceedings, the Alternate Minister expressed her satisfaction with the text of the conclusions, noting that Greece fought hard in the Council.In her remarks to the General Affairs Council, Ms. Anagnostopoulou raised the issue of the recent escalation of Turkish provocations in the Cypriot EEZ, stressing the need to consider measures to confront violations of international law and the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.Ms. Anagnostopoulou underscored the upgraded role of Greece and Cyprus, who, as she said, defended European interests in the General Affairs Council.She reiterated Greece’s longstanding position on Albania’s accession process, on the condition that all of the conditionality criteria are met.Ms. Anagnostopoulou stated that a substantial development at the General Affairs Council is that the European Union is now taking on a role in monitoring the faithful implementation of the Prespa Agreement, given that, for the first time, implementation of the Agreement is being linked to North Macedonia’s accession course.
