News of the day from across the globe, Sept. 21

Mediators in Burkina Faso’s political crisis proposed new and more inclusive elections in November, though the military that seized power in a coup last week indicated Sunday it still wants its general to lead the country during any transitional period. Tens of thousands of flag-waving demonstrators rallied Sunday in central Istanbul to denounce violence by Kurdish rebels as the country’s prime minister pledged damnation for the separatists. Speakers condemned terrorism and the violence which has rocked Turkey since the resumption of fighting between the military and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, a separatist group considered a terror organization by the U.S. At the rally, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu roared into the microphone as Turkish flags waved. Disasters at sea claimed the lives of dozens of refugees Sunday, as desperate people fleeing war and poverty braved the risky journey to seek sanctuary in Europe. Thirteen refugees died after their boat collided with a ferry off the Turkish coast, officials there said, while the Greek coast guard fanned out in the choppy waters of the Aegean Sea searching for another 24 people missing after their boat sank off the island of Lesbos. Hundreds took part in the colorful pride march held in the capital, Belgrade, thanks to thousands of riot police in full gear deployed in the downtown area to protect the gathering from right-wing extremists and soccer hooligans. In 2010 extremist groups and soccer hooligans attacked another gay pride gathering in the Balkan country, bringing clashes that injured more than 100 people.
