Two Greek athletes won silver medals on the final day of the European Indoor Track & Field Championships in Prague. Antonis Mastoras finished second in the men’s high jump and Katerina Stefanidi in the women’s pole vault. Greek track and field athlete Katerina Stefanidi cleared 4.75m, coming close to her personal best (4.77 m). Even though she was a favorite for the gold medal, she had to battle Russian athlete Anzhelika Sidorova, who had also won the gold medal in Zurich, in the summer of 2014. The Russian had a clear advantage when she jumped over the 4.80m mark, in her first try. At the suggestion of her coach, American Olympic champion Nick Hysong, she took on a height that she had never beaten (4.85m) in order to acheive her personal and national record. However, the 25-year-old athlete did not succeed, winning second place. Meanwhile, Antonis Mastoras secured a personal best at 2.31 meters, finishing joint-second with Italian Silvano Chesani in the final, after the Russian winner Daniyil Tsyplakov. Mastoras had been trying to break the 2.30m barrier for a long time and he managed to do it in one of the biggest championships of his life, so far.
