Greek FinMin Varoufakis: The Wealthy will Pay an Extraordinary Tax, if Needed

In his interview to Greek TV SKAI on Saturday morning, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis stressed that “in order to achieve balanced budgets in the Greek State, we will ask of the wealthy to pay an extraordinary tax, if necessary.” Varoufakis clarified that not all will be called to pay in order to achieve a surplus but there will be, as he said, an “income limit.” Furthermore, the Finance Minister of Greece stated that “we have not decided the details of the 100 installments as yet,” while once again assured that there will be no VAT increase in the Aegean, in the areas close to the Greek borders, on medicine, food and books. Among others, Varoufakis continued by saying that “there will be a normalization in VAT” on some products so there is a convergence with Greece’s obligation to increase some rates, in accordance with the Eurogroup agreement. “We will find a product that no one will even remember that has a tax rate,” he said. At the same time, Varoufakis noted that the 12,000-euro tax-free income measure will return in stages.
