New Suburban Railway Station in Tavros, Fare Hikes in Thessaloniki

Today, Greek Transport Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis inaugurated a new station on the Athens-Piraeus suburban railway line. The new stop is located within walking distance of the center of Tavros, a neighborhood of nearly 15,000 residents. The new station in Tavros is expected to facilitate travel for thousands of commuters passing between downtown Athens and Piraeus. It is located at the junction of Constantinoupoleos 2-4 and Korytsas streets. Today also saw a public transportation price hike for residents of the northern port city of Thessaloniki. In a bid to boost revenues, the OATH transit authority has raised prices on a single ticket from 80 cents to one euro. The 90 cent transfer ticket has also been increased to 1.20 euros. OATH has announced that old tickets will remain valid until the end of the month. The fare hikes have prompted reactions from citizen groups who plan to protest the measures at a series of rallies on Wednesday.
