Greece Requests Loan for Athens Metro Line 4

The Greek government plans to meet with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and ask for funds to start construction on the fourth Athens Metro line. The request will be made during the EIB officials’ visit in Greece in September. Greek Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has announced that the government plans on using EU structural funds and EIB loans in order to fund the project which has been estimated at 3.3 billion euros. During the EIB representatives’ visit in mid-September, the Greek Infrastructure Ministry will present a first-draft plan for the project, which is expected to be a major topic of discussion during the meetings in Athens. The EIB has already invested 1.5 billion euros in the construction of Athens Metro lines, as well as 650 million euros in Thessaloniki’s, which is still under construction. Line 4 will be U-shaped and it will connect the area of Galatsi to Maroussi. The first part of the construction will take place in downtown Athens and Alsos Veikou (Galatsi). This part will stretch for 8.3 kilometers and will be comprised of nine stations. The engineering and environmental studies for the project have already been conducted. The first section will cost around 950 million euros and EIB is expected to provide half of the amount. Line 4 will stretch for a total of 33 kilometers and will have 29 stations.
