Chaos in Apt Buildings Over Maintenance Fee Collections

Apartment building managers in Greece are striving to collect the unpaid maintenance fees as the residents cannot repay their debts because of the economic crisis. The condition in numerous apartment buildings in Greece is dramatic. Many of them don’t have power in the common areas, the elevators are out of use and the cleaning crews are unpaid as their managers can’t collect enough money to cover the buildings’ expenses. Many residents don’t have the financial means to pay their maintenance fees, thus affecting the other residents, who are usually paying more money to cover the necessary expenses. The president of the Hellenic Property Federation (POMIDA), Stratos Paradias described the situation in big apartment buildings as chaotic. As he stresses, there is no central heating due to the increase in heating oil prices, the elevators don’t work and there is no power in the common areas because of unpaid bills. Moreover, according to Paradias, in many cases the tenants move out of apartments or professional spaces, owning a considerable amount of money to the owners, who are asked then to repay their tenants’ debts so as not to be prosecuted by the Greek authorities.
