The Mayor of Chania, Emmanouil Skoulakis, the Mayor of Peristeri, Athens, Andreas Pachatouridis and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris will represent Greece in the international competition for the best mayor in the world for 2014. The 2014 World Mayor Project was launched on January 7, 2014. The current long list of 118 candidates includes 19 mayors from North America, 16 from Latin America, 43 from Europe, 24 from Asia, 7 from Australasia and 9 from Africa. More names will be added during the first round of this year’s project, until May 21. Citizens from all continents nominate their preferred candidate who must excel in qualities such as leadership and vision, management abilities and integrity, social and economic awareness, ability to provide security and to protect the environment, as well as the will and ability to foster good relations between communities from different cultural, racial and social backgrounds. The competition aims to reward the mayors who have worthily served and represented their communities in a local, national and international level. The competition is held every two years. In 2012, the Mayor of Bilbao, Spain, Iñaki Azkuna, won the title of the “World Mayor.”
