A 34-year-old leftist activist was murdered last night in Piraeus, Greece by a member of the extreme right party Golden Dawn. A 45-year old man that belongs to Golden Dawn has allegedly confessed to killing the activist.
The victim, Pavlos Fyssas, who belonged to the left-wing party Antarsia was fatally stabbed in the chest during a brawl outside a cafeteria in a suburb of Piraeus port, which according to several eye-witnesses started as an argument over a football game and ended in a heated clash over politics.
The police arrested a 45-year-old man armed with a knife and believed to belong to the far-right Golden Dawn party. The suspect has allegedly confessed to killing the victim and of being a member of Golden Dawn The authorities are still looking for other people that were reportedly involved in the incident. Earlier this morning, the police raided the offices of the party.
On the other hand, Golden Dawn spokesperson Elias Kassidiaris denied allegations that the suspect belongs to the party, claiming Golden Dawn is not responsible for the attack and thus is a victim of slander.
The far-right party has been accused of orchestrating attacks on migrants and left-wing supporters. Last week, in another Piraeus port suburb, nine members of the Greek Communist party were slightly injured in an attack by a group of far-right members. However, Golden Dawn also denied involvement in the incident.
Antarsia, the leftist party whose member was last night’s victim has stated that Fyssas was targeted by neo-Nazis because of his anti-fascist activities and called for a protest.
