Greek parliament to vote on state job cuts

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Anti-austerity protests have been taking place in Athens ahead of the Greek parliament's vote to introduce thousands of public-sector job cuts and transfers.
Lawmakers are to vote late Wednesday on a bill that will put 12,500 public-sector staff — mostly teachers and municipal workers — in a program that subjects them to involuntary transfers and possible dismissals. The vote will also pave the way for 15,000 layoffs by the end of next year.
The job cuts were demanded by Greece's emergency creditors — the International Monetary Fund and other countries using the euro.
Staff targeted in the measures took part in a third straight day of protests. Mayors from around Greece marched to parliament, while municipal police officers rallied through central Athens with their motorcycles and patrol cars.
