2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup: Greece Grabs a Second Win Against the Philippines
82-70 was the final score of today’s game between Greece and the Philippines for the 2014 Mundobasket held in Spain. Easily, but not as easy as yesterday’s game against Senegal (an 87-64 win) Fotis Katsikaris’ players beat one of the weakest, but fastest at the same time, participants of the FIBA World Cup. Forward Giorgios Printezis lead the scoring with 25, an individual record for him with the national team, while center Giannis Printezis helped out defensively with 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks. The quality between both teams was obvious throughout the whole game, but it was Greece’s famous defense that overcame the Philippines’ fast paced attacking plays. Almost none of the SouthEast Asian team’s shots were taken freely, a deed attributed to coach Fotis Katsikaris who has publicly declared that he always wants the opponent to struggle to score. NBAers Kostas Papanikolaou (Houston Rockets) and Nick Kalathes (Memphis Grizzlies) both added 9 points, while Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks) scored only 3 but with 6 rebounds. Next challenge for the Greek team is tomorrow against Puerto Rico who disappointingly lost today to Senegal 75-82. In the other game of the group, Croatia beat Argentina 90-85. Greece and Croatia both now have two wins, Senegal and Argentina have 1, while Puerto Rico and the Philippines are still winless. Greece (Katsikaris): Mantzaris, Mpourousis 12, Zisis 8, Vasiliadis 6, Kalathes 9, Papanikolaou 9, Sloukas 3, Kaimakoglou 5, Antetokounmpo 3, Vougioukas 2, Printezis 25
