This year’s Marathon in Greece had a new name: “Athens Marathon. The Authentic.” After all, the race got its name after Athenian warrior Feidippides who fought the Persians and then ran the distance of 42,195 meters (26.2 miles) from Marathon to Athens to tell his people “We Won!” The winner of the 32nd Athens Marathon – the Authentic was Kenyan runner Felix Kandie who also set a new course record, after covering the distance in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 36 seconds. In light of yesterday’s Athens Marathon, let’s take a look at some other great marathons around the world: New York Marathon (November) More than 50,000 runners from across the globe gather in the Big Apple to run in the world’s most celebrated city. Every year in November, the city wears its running shoes and gathers on Verrazano Narrows bridge in Staten Island to run all the way to Central Park. The New York Marathon attracts Olympic winners and runners, Special Olympics runners, people with special abilities and many others who run for charity purposes. It is part of the “World Marathon Majors,” a collaboration of the six biggest marathon races in the world, and every year it determines the best male and female marathon runners. Berlin Marathon (September) In September 2014, the 41st Berlin Marathon saw 40,000 runners running in the streets of the European capital. The level roads and the glorious September weather make the Berlin Marathon ideal for those who want to run the 42-kilometer distance. The particular marathon has seen three world records in the last six years with many athletes outdoing themselves. Big Five Marathon (June) The “Big Five Marathon” of South Africa is considered to be the wildest in the world. Instead of running on city streets, participants have to run on dirt roads, run up and down steep hills, run on sand and in many cases run alongside elephants, rhinoceroses and buffalos. The wild, natural beauty is a great compensation for athletes who choose to participate in this extraordinary marathon. The Great Wall Marathon (May) The Great Wall Marathon is as challenging as its name suggests. It has only started in 1999 and each year it hosts about 2,500 runners. Part of it has athletes run 9,000 steps up, making it one of the world’s hardest. In addition to that, for part of the distance, athletes have to run amidst cars and traffic. The Polar Circle Marathon (October) With temperatures running at -30 degrees Celsius, it is no wonder the Polar Circle Marathon made the Guinness World Record for the coldest marathon run. It takes place in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, and athletes have to be very well prepared to cover the 42-kilometer distance on ice, wearing special gear. It costs several thousands of dollars to participate and only about 250 runners take the challenge each year. It was inaugurated in 2002 and most participants are hardened athletes. Kandie broke away from compatriot Raymond Kimutai Bett after 35 kilometers to win by nearly two minutes. Bett was timed in 2:12:34. Josphat Kiptanui Chobei came in third in 2:15:38, 13 seconds ahead of fellow Kenyan Julius Kiplagat Korir. The previous course record was held by Italy's Stefano Baldini, set at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The 32nd Classical Marathon Race took place this morning November 9, in Athens, Greece. Kenyan marathon runner Felix Kandie, was the big winner of this year’s race, covering 42 kilometers — from Marathon to the Panathinaic Stadium (downtown Athens) — in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 36 seconds! This is a new record time for the Marathon Race, beating the record time of Italian marathon runner Stefano Baldini, who had covered the 42 kilometer race in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 55 seconds in 2004. Baldini had won a gold medal for his achievement at the marathon race during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. In second place at today’s 32nd Classic Marathon Race was Raymond Bett, also a marathon runner from Kenya. In third came another Kenyan runner, Ashwini K. Choubey. More than 35 thousand runners participated in today’s race, with a record number of foreign participants. Greek runner Christoforos Merousis, was the first Greek to pass the finish line after 2 hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds. The 5 km Marathon race that began a little after 8 a.m. this morning, was the most popular race, starting from Amalias Avenue and passing through many main streets of Athens. This race was joined by almost 9 thousand participants, among of which participated many Greek celebrities. The remaining two races, the 10 km race and the 42 km race began at 9 a.m. this morning. The race is expected to be completed around 6 p.m. this afternoon. In the meantime, many streets in the city center and along the way extending from Marathon to Athens will also remain closed.

We are just hours away from this year’s 32nd Classic Marathon Race taking place in Greece. The historic race begins from Marathon, the site where in ancient times, the Great Marathon battle took place that resulted in a great victory by the Greeks. This 42km race has become a very popular event that attracts athletes from Greece and all over the world. More than 70 thousand visitors are expected to join this wonderful event, with more than 35 thousand athletes participating in the race. The number of athletes participating is a record number for Greece, making it the greatest athletic event of the country and one of the greatest of Europe. From these 35 thousand athletes, 13 thousand are going to run the full race (42 km), extending from Marathon, in Eastern Attica all the way to the Panathinaic stadium, downtown Athens. The remaining athletes will run 5 or 10 km races. More than 5 thousand athletes are expected to join the race from abroad. The number of foreign athletes has increased this year by 35 percent in comparison to last year. This event is of great importance for the city of Athens, as it attracts more than 70 thousand visitors from all over the country and abroad, giving Athens a “boost” in terms of tourism revenues and promotion. The Union of Attica hoteliers will give specific figures on the number of tourists it hosted in its hotels during this weekend at the end of the month, but according to the Athletic Union of Greece (SEGAS) the revenues from this year’s Marathon race are expected to be between 18 and 20 million euros. Many parallel events are going to take place tomorrow at all the Municipalities that the race is going to pass through (i.e. Agia Paraskevi, Holargos etc) . Moreover, a Special Olympics children race of 1500 meters will also be taking place. The revenues from the race will go to two charity foundations, “Eliza” and “Kivotos tou Kosmou.” The Eliza foundation helps abused children, while Kivotos tou Kosmou helps mothers and children that need assistance. Well known personalities from Greek showbiz will be joining the 5 km race, including top model Kostas Fragolias, actress Zeta Douka as well as Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In the 10 km race, Minister of Education Andreas Loverdos and Minister of Citizen Protection Vasilis Kikilias will also join in with other athletes and showbiz personalities. Denis Kimetto, who became the first runner in history to complete the Marathon race in 2 hours and 3 minutes is in Athens and will be given the AIMS award, as the top marathon runner of the season. Moroever, Florence Kiplagat will also be given the top female award, for running the semi-marathon in a record time of 1 hour and 5 minutes. Another important personality, Mary Wittenberg , the “iron lady” of the New York marathon is also in Athens for the 32nd Marathon race.

The fourth annual Spetses Mini-Marathon concluded successfully today, Sunday, October 12, with the event’s overall participation exceeding organizers’ expectations. The scenic island of Spetses hosted the race for the fourth straight October. In a competition that places sportsmanship in the highest regard, amateur and professional athletes vied together in races of five and 25 kilometers. In the five kilometer race, the first male to cross the finishing line was Kostas Nakopoulos, the first female Roi Apostolopoulou. Konstantinos Poulios came in second and Kostas Drossos won third place. Greek medalist Athanasia Tsoumeleka participated in the 25 kilometer race, which saw Giorgos Valavanis finishing first, followed by Stelios Vassiliadis and Ioannis Vafiadis. The air was filled with excitement during the prize ceremony, in which the organizers and athletes announced a Spetses Mini-Marathon for 2015, the event’s fifth consecutive appearance on the island. The 4th Spetses Mini-Marathon was organized by Communication Lab under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Municipality of Spetses.
