Automakers piling into dinky truck segment show off new entries at Geneva Auto Show

by  Associated Press Honey, we shrunk the SUV _ and Europe loves it by DAVID McHUGH, Associated Press - 4 March 2015 02:18-05:00 FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — In Europe, SUV now stands for: Shrinking Utility Vehicle. An array of ever-smaller sport-utility vehicles and SUV car-like crossovers is going on display this week at the Geneva International Motor Show. Automakers are piling into the segment as one of the best hopes for growth in a still-recovering European market. European consumers like the higher seating, easier entry and perceived greater freight-carrying capacity. Auto makers like the fact that they can build an SUV body on the same mechanical platforms and modules they use for compact cars, saving money on development costs. The key in Europe has turned out to be putting the vehicles on platforms originally built for compact or small mid-sized cars. They're generally less than 4.5 meters (177 inches) long, or smaller than a Honda Civic, which measures 4.54 meters (179.4 inches.) Compact SUVs have gained in popularity globally, but they're really getting attention now in Europe. The smaller size helps with narrow streets and tight parking in European cities that made full-size SUVs less practical for many people, and a little politically incorrect as well for the more environmentally conscious. The recently lower price of gasoline will not hurt, although gas remains painfully expensive in Europe compared with the United States due to high taxes. At the Geneva show, among the top new contenders will be the Renault Kadjar, which blends the more rugged SUV style with cues from cars and station wagons, such as a lower roofline and comfortable interior, in a small, 4.45-meter package. The Kadjar (pronounced KA-jar) is headed for the European market this summer and China after that, with Renault saying it's too early for price information. Hyundai's redesigned Tucson has grown slightly but is only a fraction longer at 4.47 meters (176.2 inches.) In the higher priced realm, Infiniti is showing off its QX30 concept vehicle, which keeps the higher stance of an SUV and uses carbon fiber cladding and large 21-inch wheels with milled aluminum spokes. Infiniti says the design is intended to make occupants feel safe and protected; it has a pronounced front bumper and a large skid plate to protect the rear. The QX30 aims at one of the problems of the segment's popularity: how to distinguish one's entrant from all the others. The QX30, which will be introduced as a production vehicle in 2016, tries to do this with bold styling; it has sharp metal curves and flares that stand out. "We want to come to the market with a different offer," said Francois Goupil de Bouille, Infiniti's vice-president for Europe, Middle East, Russia and Africa. "So what we are going to do is come with a striking design, a very different design. We are going to take the maximum risk." In the smaller, compact category, Honda is show off the new H-RV, which goes on sale in Europe this summer. It blends a basic hatchback configuration with SUV styling such as cladding and bold creases in the body metal; the company says it has added acoustic insulation to the wheel arches and floor to make riding in it less noisy. Chinese newcomer Qoros is unveiling its 3 City SUV, a crossover that for now is headed for China only. Analyst Tim Urquhart at IHS Automotive say these new models are further evidence that European car buyers are shifting away from classic sedans and hatchbacks in favor of SUV body styles. "It's signaling a bit of a sea change which has been happening in the European market for the better part of a decade now, a gradual shift from passenger car-style body types, your conventional sedans and hatchbacks, and more toward these SUV and crossover sort of vehicles. "They use existing power train technology and existing passenger platform architecture. You raise the ride height a bit, use some funky SUV styling cues, and you've just created a different genre of vehicle," he said. "You're extending your range in a cost-effective manner, in a way that's exciting to consumers." The market for the smaller versions "continues to have huge growth potential" even as more and more carmakers pile into it, as they did with big SUVs years ago. The field is already getting crowded with vehicles such as Nissan's Qashqai and Juke and Opel's Mokka. Small SUV sales in Europe are expected to triple from 1.1 million to 3.2 million annual sales over the next decade, IHS Automotive predicts. That's even as small and midsize car sales show only stable sales, rising from 4.7 million units to 5.3 million. Europe's car market needs the boost as its economy slowly heals from a financial crisis over government debt in countries such as Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Car sales rose for the 17th straight month in January in the 28-country European Union, and last year's sales of 12.55 million vehicles represented a 5.6 percent increase over the year before — the first such increase after six years of declines. Sales, however, remain far below the 2007 peak of just under 16 million. The show in Geneva is open to the public from March 5-15. ___ Online: www.salon-auto-ch News Topics: Business, Automobile manufacturing, Automobile shows, Industry conferences and trade shows, Consumer product manufacturing, Consumer products and services, Industries, Automobiles, Lifestyle, Corporate news People, Places and Companies: Europe, Geneva, Germany, Switzerland, Western Europe Copyright 2015 The Associated Press. As a newcomer to the show, the company was satisfied with the marketing efficiency and brand building that was gained through participating in Automechanika Shanghai. “We hope to increase our brand awareness and market share of aftersale service, and also let more consumers know about our technologies” praised Mr Taro Yamane, the company’s CSR-Public Relations Department Supervisor. He continued: “What surprised us during this exhibition is that apart from many Chinese clients, we have also had many foreign customers coming. We hope to make use of this efficient platform to get more industry information and to enable more Chinese customers to get to know us.” A number of exhibitors at the Accessories & Tuning sector were satisfied with the highly qualified leads that they generated at the show – an important element of new customer acquisition, including China Du-Hope International Group, the exclusive agent of Liqui Moly and a renowned global supplier of engine and gear oils, oil and fuel additives as well as auto care products, and German company Bizol, a reputable manufacturer of motor oils and lubricants. Mr Marcello Assandri, Chief Marketing Officer of Bizol noted the vast array of countries from which visitors had travelled to attend the show and launched new products at the show by taking advantage of its influence, commenting: “We want to acquire more Chinese contacts: business to business. Also, we met many of our international distributors here, for example, from the USA, Korea, Palestine as well as some countries from South America.” Visitors hail show as an important all-round platform for global buyers and specialists Automechanika Shanghai is highly regarded among exhibitors and visitors alike as being one of the key and influential platforms for both Chinese and global business deals in the automotive sector, as well as for its abilities to aid companies and visitors with networking, knowledge and market intelligence acquirement. This year’s show strengthened its effort in inviting local and overseas buyers and professional visitors groups from different potential markets. A Nepalese visitor group was one of the invited groups and they visited the show for the first time. Mr Binod Malla for Hilltop Exhibition Pvt Ltd brought the spare parts dealers from Nepal to the show, commenting: “Our buyers are very happy with the fair. We haven’t seen everything yet, but they’ve already found lots of new products they might import to Nepal. Also, a few of them have placed orders and made new contacts. This fair is convenient for us and we plan to come next year too.” Aiming to provide buyers an enjoyable sourcing experience, the show has also introduced the brand new Premium Buyers Club which is an exclusive programme for high quality buyers at senior management level, or those who hold full purchasing authority within the industry. Mr David Xie, Strategic Buyer for Gentherm Automotive Systems (China) Ltd, a leading innovative producer in designing and engineering new thermal comfort technologies for automotive use, and whose company’s annual purchasing amount reached more than RMB 50 million, was one of the members of this prestigious club. He praised Automechanika Shanghai for the business opportunities it provides, saying: “I’ve met a number of suppliers and I am satisfied with their quality, as their factory attributes meet our requirements. Most of them will become my potential suppliers. The show is successful as it helps drive the whole automotive industry.” Visitors from overseas also felt this year’s show continued to provide an excellent breadth and quality of suppliers, making it a worthwhile trip. Mr Bernard Schwartz, Export Sales, ISA GmbH from Switzerland said: “I’ve got a lot of good distributor contacts here and have met quite a few companies from China and throughout Asia. The Chinese market is building up and there are a lot of opportunities here. There will be more and more potential as people’s attitudes to distribution networks here continues to get better.” Greek visitor, Ms Sevi Kopelou from Group Radiator agreed, commenting: “I have visited many trade fairs and Automechanika Shanghai is the most important because it has a complete range of products and you can find everything here. I am looking for radiators, coolers and intercoolers as well as fans at the show from China, India, Japan and Korea, and the quality of their products is getting better and better. We will continue to visit Automechanika Shanghai because it’s important for our business. It’s very far away but it’s worth the trip.” Industry players benefit from popular fringe programme Automechanika Shanghai is also reputable for its fringe programme, providing valuable educational and information exchange opportunities. This year’s show offered a wide range of 38 innovative and practical fringe events for different levels of industry players. Events covered the three major automotive sectors as well as hot topics such as e-commerce development and electric vehicles and related products. One noteworthy event was the SAE Vehicle Electronics and Powertrain Technology Forum 2014. Approximately 150 industry specialists attended to learn about the automotive industry’s critical issues and were addressed by speakers from OEMs, systems integrators, tier suppliers and universities. Mr Gary Schkade, General Manager, China and Managing Director Asia Pacific, SAE International, China was one of the keynote speakers at the event. Speaking about the forum, he explained: “Automechanika Shanghai is a great place for us to hold this seminar. Every year we work with our partners to assess its success. This is our second year doing the seminar and we are making a vision for our work, and by all means Automechanika Shanghai is one of the key parts of who we are and what we do.” To meet the industry trend of the new energy sector, high profile conference entitled “NextGen Auto International Summit China” brought 14 influential speakers and around 400 delegates including car manufacturers, senior Chinese government representatives and industry experts to cover topics based on the development of the future trend of new energy vehicles. One of them was Tesla, a famous electric car manufacturer, which usually exhibits at car show instead of automotive industry trade fair like Automechanika Shanghai. This year, they participated and displayed their EV cars at the show as well as speaking at the conference as they recognised the show’s strong influence as a networking and marketing platform. In addition to well-known companies organising forums and seminars at Automechanika Shanghai, a number of overseas and domestic government agencies have made use of this highly recognised industry event to promote their regional industry, helping industry players capitalise on opportunities in various potential markets. For example, a number of seminars and events were organised by the Trade & Investment Promotion Section of Consulate General of Poland, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Shandong Sub-Council as well as the Wenzhou Municipal Government, with the latter organising a seminar and press conference at the show. The support and recognition from these high level associations and government agencies has further underlined the show’s important role for the industry. Automechanika Shanghai is organised by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd and the China National Automotive Industry International Corporation (CNAICO). It is one of 14 Automechanika fairs held in Africa, Asia, Europe and Central and South America. The 2015 edition of the show will be held 2 – 5 December 2015 at a larger venue to accommodate for the year on year growth of the show. Europe New Car Registrations Rise 1.8 Percent In August: ACEA

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Car sales in Europe rose 1.8 percent in August with volume makers Volkswagen , Ford and Opel benefiting from improved demand in Spain, Portugal and Ireland, while premium makers lost ground due to a drop in sales in Germany.New passenger car registrations in the European Union (EU) and the countries of the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) rose to 701,118 vehicles in August, from 688,464 in the year-earlier period, data from the Association of European Carmakers (ACEA) showed.A recovery in demand in Spain, Portugal and Greece, countries formerly plagued by austerity, helped lift momentum in favour of mass market brands, with sales of VW branded cars up 14 percent, Ford up 15.2 percent and Opel registrations rising 7.5 percent.By contrast, August registrations of BMW cars fell 2.0 percent, Mercedes-Benz car sales fell 3.9 percent and Audi registrations fell 7.6 percent.Car sales fell 0.4 percent in Germany, Europe's largest car market which is a traditional stronghold for the German luxury makers.Europe's car industry is gradually emerging from a six-year slump, with sales bottoming out last year as austerity-hit consumers cut back on expensive purchases.Aside from the slump in sales in Germany, the slip in registrations among premium auto makers may also be down to a shift in sales tactics."We have to find the right balance between volume and pricing," BMW Chief Executive Norbert Reithofer told analysts in August. "If you reduce your volume, you can even have a better profit."A 26 percent jump in car sales in Portugal and a 13.7 percent jump in Spain helped to offset a 2.6 percent drop in France and a 0.2 percent fall in registrations in Italy, the latest figures from industry body ACEA showed.ACEA also released sales figures for July. Passenger car registrations in the EU and EFTA countries rose 5.6 percent on the year, to 1,081,686 vehicles.(Reporting by Edward Taylor; Editing by Kirsti Knolle)Join the conversation about this story »
