Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Markos Bolaris, received Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, Pharan and Raitho, at his office today. His Eminence congratulated the Deputy Minister on the assumption of his new duties, and praised the fine cooperation the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has developed with the Egyptian Authorities, especially in the area of culture. The Deputy Minister expressed his profound respect for Mr Damianos, and great joy at receiving him. He stressed that the Holy Monastery of Sinai is a holy institution promoting not only the Monastery but also its guarded treasures, the library, and the sacristy where sacred relics of the Ecumenical Orthodoxy and the Greek culture are kept. It is no coincidence, he added, that in 2003, UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage site. The discussion focused on education and cultural initiatives of the Holy Monastery in Egypt and Greece, the special status of the Holy Monastery, the synergies required with the Greek State and the ongoing city-twinning scheme of Heraklion with the Egyptian city on the Sinai Peninsula.
