GREECE was as vulnerable to the influx as any country in Europe. A decade of recession and political turmoil meant that it simply wasn't ready for the flood of migrants arriving on its shores. Still, it had been a useful staging post for displaced peoples' perilous journeys on to northern and central Europe.
