Macedonia Gives Mute Response on Serbian FM's Name Comments

Macedonia's Foreign Ministry is cautious in its response to comments by Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, who earlier this week said Belgrade made a mistake when it recognized Macedonia under that name. The Serbian top diplomat then explained the name FYROM would be used multilaterally and that using the name "Macedonia' harmed Serbia's "Greek brothers". "Very close and deep friendly relations" exist between the two countries and their respective citizens and what politicians should do is only heepen historic ties or at least assume the responsibility to avoid destroying them, news website MKD.mk quotes the Macedonian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement to the media outlet. It also quotes Foreign Ministry sources as saying the statement was a warning before the new vote on Kosovo's entry into UNESCO, the UN cultural body. Macedonia, Croatia and Montenegro voted "yes" in November's session, but Kosovo failed to get enough support, and a new round is due this spring. Greece did not vote against, but abstained in the vote.
