FT: Asylum Seekers Refuse Relocation to Bulgaria, Romania

The refusal of many asylum seekers to be relocated from Greece to poorer EU member states, such as Bulgaria and Romania, is challenging the EU’s scheme to spread more evenly the refugee burden around the bloc, according to an article published by the Financial Times. Out of the 47 asylum seekers who Bulgaria had agreed to take in as of last week, only four were relocated. Thirty-six withdrew from the relocation scheme after they were told they would be sent to Greece’s northern neighbor, while another seven “absconded”, the FT said, citing Greek government data. Romania also isn’t a preferred destination for relocation. Thirty-two out of 67 asylum seekers who had to be sent there refused to go or disappeared. You can read the FT article here.
