EU Awards EUR 56 M to Help Improve Conditions for Migrants in Greece

The European Commission has awarded EUR 56 M in emergency funding to help improve conditions for migrants in Greece. The funding aims to increase the capacities of the Greek authorities to register newly arriving migrants and to process their asylum claims. The funding will create better conditions for vulnerable migrants and strengthen the registration and asylum process with additional human resources, better IT infrastructure, an increased availability of interpretation and better access to information, the Commission said in a statement on Friday. Out of the total sum, EUR 30 M is awarded to the UNHCR to support the Emergency Response Plan for Greece and strengthen the capacity of the Greek asylum service; the International Organization for Migration will receive EUR 13 M to provide assistance to the most vulnerable migrants stranded in Greece. Greece’s Interior Ministry and Asylum Service will receive a total of EUR 13 M to enhance the efficiency of the asylum process, strengthen the registration process and provide support to national police at the country’s borders.
